You just end up ruining your car.

I broke mine last night.

Some lessons must be learned by experience I guess. And I'm a GOOD drunk driver!

I was alone...in my BIG BED

Not only is no one going to defend possessing firearms, no one can even suggest that the laws and punishments have gotten out of control.

People get so upset about this and drunk driving, but as long as someone is packing correctly it doesn't matter what else they do.

There is no such thing as driving drunk "correctly" If it's such a big fuss to have to drive somewhere? don't fucking drink you fucking alcoholic. This discussion should end now because there is no argument, other than idiotic drivelings like this.

(Incidently, I haven't driven drunk since before I turned 21-luckily I was never caught; I drove fine drunk, but all it takes is a burned-out taillight and the fines are so high (I also don't have a cell phone.))

The only flaw in your argument is that a lot of people are stupid idiots, and they need a law to tell them not to do something. At least the laws of drinking and driving will make a person think twice in a lot of situations. The people who don't think twice, the people who just do whatever, thinking that everything will be okay, that nothing bad could ever happen to them...these are the people that not even laws can protect.

Jimmy: do you honestly think that you would still present this same argument if you lost a loved one, or your ability to walk due to a drunk driver? I'm telling you straight up, you'd look like an asshole sitting in that wheel chair.

Granted, when laws are lobbyed only be emotion, or when people even act out of nothing more than emotion...it can be depressing or ridiculous. Drinking and driving, however, is obviously something that, with a little bit of logic, anybody can tell is a bad idea.

So next time I'm going for a Sunday drive in your neighborhood, swigging shots of Wild Turkey and firing my gun at mailboxes, I'll be sure to do donuts on your lawn and shit on your porch.

Can't see the lights or the blue orange signs.
Can't see the road or the long white lines.
Feeling the ground through the pedals in the floor,
Feeling death pounding at the door.

Windows all open, chaos in my hair,
Driving me 'round and leaving me there.
Cover my eyes and we'll die driving blind.
Cover my trail and we'll leave life behind.
Drive Blind.
Drive Blind - Ride:

All at once, too much light.
Captured and frozen, hear no sound.
Bright flashes penetrate,
Glowing, flowing, lifting off the ground.

*******

Too hard on the brakes again
What if these brakes just give in?
What if they don't get out of the way?
What if there's someone overtaking?
I'm going out for a little drive
And it could be the last time you see me alive
There could be an idiot on the road
The only kick in life is pumping his steel

Wrap me up in the back of the trunk
Packed with foam and blind drunk
They won't ever take me alive
'Cause they all drive...

Don't die on the motorway
The moon would freeze, the plants would die
I couldn't cope if you crashed today
All the things I forgot to say
I'm going out for a little drive
And it could be the last time you see me alive
What if the car loses control?
What if there's someone overtaking?

Wrap me up in the back of the trunk
Packed with foam and blind drunk
They won't ever take me alive
'Cause they all drive killer cars

Wrap me up in the back of the trunk
Packed with foam and blind drunk
No they won't ever take me alive
'Cause they all drive killer cars
They all drive killer cars
They all drive killer cars

I'm for the re-institution of the law that requires a man waving two flags to run in front of any car that has a woman driving it.

Very true of course, Mike. But, isn't it better to not hit someone (i.e. be alert/driving more attentively) than to hit them but at the speed limit? I do agree though that once you've accepted that you're going to hit someone, or if we're talking about the situation where something/someone pops out right in front of you and even the most alert person in the world is taken by surprise, then the slower you're going, the better.

I'm just not sure it's realistic to expect people to drive as slow as possible, and I don't think that 10 km/h in either direction makes much change in impact once you get above say 50 km/h anyway. If that's the trade we're making for people being a little more alert, then I'd rather have people driving more alertly (and increase the probability of them seeing me) than 10 or 20 km/h slower and hitting me, but <knock on wood> I've never in 10 years of driving hit anyone or been hit. Well, I've been backed into in a parking lot, but that wasn't exactly the end of the world. Still, I take your point and do agree with you in principle.

There is nothing dangerous about speeding generally (provided it is not much faster than the average speed of traffic), in fact studies have proven the following (which forced our government to reevaluate the way it penalizes speeders):

1) People driving faster tend to be paying better attention and are less likely to be unalert or drowsy, which causes some 85% of accidents give or take.

2) There are no links between increased speed and accident frequency on any level of significance up until a point considered to be 'dangerous driving' generally around 40 km/h faster than posted.

It should also be mentioned that people travelling slower than the general rate of traffic (regardless of the posted limit) are a much more significant danger to themselves and all other drivers on the road.

Just thought I'd throw some stuff in there. As for cell phones, I agree 90% of people are incapable of doing this (and so I'm willing for the 10% to suffer), which I don't understand, but these people also tend to be incapable of driving to begin with in my opinion. I think I'd like to see driving tests that challenge the would-be-driver with more stimuli and really see if this person is all there. Really, so much time is spent on parallel parking, for example, but nothing on the majority of what people do - freeway driving. At least here. Our driving test is a joke.

It's the difference it makes once you crash/hit someone that is the problem.

I understand your point of view pozacrat. But I think that moderation and self-responsibility are other solutions. I mean: If alcohol didn't existed or was prohibited (which is impossible), there would be other problems like drugs or speed...
I also know that it's a bit optimistic to think that people will all make themselves aware of their responsibilities, and that it's not the kind of world we actually live in. But I really think that there are effective solutions to decrease injured and death on the roads.

I know I personally have considered not drinking. I never have. But I understand that drinking is a personal choice for somebody and I respect that. If a guy wants to get plastered at a wedding reception, that's his decision and I'll respect that. It was his decision to get in his car, drive the wrong way down the interstate, and plow head on into my girlfriend and I on an overpass at a combined speed of appx. 155mph and permanently crippling my right arm that I didn't respect. Yeah, I think the world would be a better place if alcohol never existed and mankind had a significantly less destructive-yet-equally-appealing vice. But that's just my view.

You're very lucky nobody was hurt. Then things get more complicated than you can imagine. It sounds like your scenario has a sort of lesson-learned air about it, which you should definately not take for granted. Though it doesn't sound like you are. It shouldn't have to take a first-hand experience with drunk driving to make somebody learn their lesson. Common sense should keep it from having to get that far, but since it did, at least nobody was hurt. The only light at the end of the tunnel for your situation, as far as I can see, is that hopefully those who know you personally will think of your wrecked car and choose not to get behind the wheel after drinking, and avoid hurting or killing somebody innocent.

Unfortunately, Ice Cream...and this is in no way intended to excuse myself or take the matter lightly...when people are inebriated, they tend to think they are less likely to err. So, the thought of safely maneuvering through potentially hazardous choices via responsible alternatives simply doesn't exist.Basically it's temporary retardation, which in the long run causes actual retardation if not kept in check. Or death. I admit my guilt fully, and am a very lucky person to have not been injured and to have not injured...and to have caused damage to nothing but my personal vehicle...and to have miraculously escaped the scene without being caught on a street which is notoriously patroled. I was very fortunate in my drunken stupidity. Would I do it again? Absolutely not. In fact, when I bought my new car, I swore never to drive it after drinking. This was 8 months ago. The one time I was not good on my word was all it took. I'm not sure what I even expected starting this post...it was not to brag or even make light of it...that's just how I come off...and I can live without the respect from others. That's easy to accept. It's the respect I currently am devoid of for myself that makes me feel next to worthless and unacceptable.
