So there is a heavy emphasis on guitar based bands in the off topic section (understandable obviously), and althought rock bands were the basis of my music develpment, i also like other genres..

What is everyones favourtite/reccommened NON ROCK music/albums..?

Couple of my favourite rap albums

Beastie Boys - Ill Communication
Quannam Collective - Spectrum
Jurrasic 5 - Power in Numbers (don't pass up an op to see these guys live!)

Will edit to include dance/electronic and producers!

I didn't check to see if there was a thread on this already - but maybe new one in order anyway??

not rock:
Air, Ladytron, Superheroes, Peaches,
electronica does it for me

not rock:
Nellie McKay, Norah Jones, Jem,
femail singers that sing great (and are hot, not that it matters)

Brian Wilson is rock!
SMiLE maybe not, but I would definately call it the best rock album that I know,
because I love it so much. ;)

Carl - Your PCO collection isn't lacking. They're all good. I just especially like the 1981 disc (the first I bought), much of which is on the live disc. Wish there were more groups like them, but I guess music doesn't work like that.

edit: I should have said they're all good, except that I couldn't get into their first album "Music From The Penguin Cafe" (1976 - long gap before the next album), other than the wonderful track "Giles Farnaby's Dream".
Carl Posted - 12/05/2005 : 20:28:24
I only have Preludes, Airs And Yodels, and the live album When In Rome. A friend turned me on to them years ago. A lot of they're music is used in advertisements (and movies too, I think?)-in particular Music For A Found Harmonium, Perpetuum Mobile and Telephone And Rubber Band.

Kraftwerk
Jeff Mills
Transglobal Underground
Massive Attack

and oh so many more

hip-hop/whatever:
Tricky
Public Enemy

jazz:

Pastorius

this is useless. I'll recommend a couple of essential records tomorrow if I have time.

2 many dj - have seen them twice at festivals – the www.electricpicinic.ie festival - I will keep plugging this gig - absolutely brilliant and phenomenal line up last year and year before, if you got to the site, click on enter 2006 site, then click ‘music’ in the 'what’s on' tab, you will find alot of the bands/djs/rappers mentioned in this thread were on line up last year, its a so called ‘boutique’ music festival, in other words, a slightly older crowd, ecleptic mix of artists, nice surroundings, very relaxed and friendly atmosphere, if you are in Britain or Ireland, make the effort and go next year, its been extended to three says! – after seeing them the second time - 2 many djs that is - I thought maybe they were a bit formulaic.. but always a great atmosphere!

Actually the festival i was going on about up there, right click and save target as on this

And you don't get away with Gorillaz!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, 3 Feet High and Rising is probably the best, but De La Soul is Dead and Buhloone are rather good too. After that, it tends to get too much like modern gangster rap.

De La Soul are great, but don't have an album, just tracks, what do you think is their best album toeknee?

3 Feet High and Rising was great, but that and the next one are the only ones I ever heard, and that has been several years. Don't know how the new stuff (if there is) sounds.

* every album of souled american (alt-folk/country), altough they rock in some sense

* police - especially the late albums (ghost in the machine, synchronicity)

* songwriters: leonard cohen, suzanne vega

* (early) pet shop boys have some good songs too

* beach boys ? i don't know much, but of course pet sounds.

* yeah, and a lot of folk/country - but isn't good rock intrinsically connected to folk ? both make heavy use of guitars...
e.g. neil young - is it rock or country ? whatever...

I joined the cult of Souled American / 'cause they are a damn' fine band

John Zorn, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and The Mahavishnu Orchestra for jazzy type stuff. Listening to Mahavishnu Orchestra now it doesn't seem weird or crazy in the slightest though it must have blown people away when it first came out.

William Elliot Whitmore, Joshua Black Wilkins for alt countryesque stuff/perving

I also have a weakness for pretty much most of Missy Elliot's stuff.

Lead me not into temptation; I can find the way myself.
