The 80's... a decade that is often mocked for it so-called musical weakness or bad taste, which is a statement that I definitely don't agree with.
Just thinking of some of the bands (APART FROM THE PIXIES) that marked these ten years makes me feel dizzy: Bauhaus, Hüsker Dü, The Cramps, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Depeche Mode, The Cure, New Order, XTC, Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth, Echo And The Bunnymen, The Gun Club, Killing Joke, Violent Femmes, Soft Cell, Pere Ubu, The Smiths, Talking Heads, Minutemen, R.E.M., The Fall, Prince, P.I.L., Metallica, Jane's Addiction, Sisters Of Mercy, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, U2, Siouxsie And The Banshees, The Jesus And Mary Chain, Einstürzende Neubauten...
So here's my top 5:
1- Sonic Youth
2- The Smiths
3- The Cure
4- Depeche Mode
5- New Order

So, I've counted the votes, and it seems that Sonic Youth, The Cure, The Smiths, R.E.M., The Violent Femmes and The Talking Heads are equal at the first round. I declare the second and final round opened, and I personally give my vote to Sonic Youth.

I'd say the 90's stuff is better yeah but I really like some of the 80's stuff too. They have always been hit and miss, even within an album, but there are such treasures to find on pretty much every album I think.
I also wanted to get Talking Heads and CVB on my list.

Homers, is any late-80s period GBV stuff good? I haven't heard it (except "Liar's Tale" from Self-Inflicted Aerial Nostalgia), but I've heard that it isn't as good as the early to mid-90s period of which higlights include Propellor, Static Airplane Jive EP, Bee Thousand, Alien Lanes, and Under The Bushes Under The Stars .

The Beat Farmer - are you from Southern California Z Zoquis? Them and Mojo Nixon were the big local bands in San Diego in the late 80s. |

I used to like all those cow-punk bands a ton too - Jason and The Scorchers, Lone Justice, The Beat Farmers, The Long Ryders, Rank & File, The Rave-Ups...good stuff. |

Apart from Pixies, some that have been mentioned and that I can think of, and in no particular order: Killing Joke, Metallica, The Cure, Sonic Youth, REM, Depeche Mode, Nomeansno, too many more to think of.
And maybe I'm just being nostagic, but Duran Duran had some great songs!
Oh, and Madness, Adam And The Ants, Dexy's Midnight Runners, all had great songs! Oh, and Talking Heads, as mentioned! Oh, Oh, and Toyah! My brother has some of her records! (I keep having to edit this!!)

I spent the eighties listening to The Smiths, The Cure, The Clash, Hubert-Félix Thiéfaine, Jason and the Scorchers, and punk/psychobilly acts on local college radio. The shows were called "Raw Power" and "Remote Control". Local bands had names like "The Scraps" and sang anti-National Front anthems such as "Le Pen Fuck You").
My top 5, however, would look a lot like Cheeseman's:
