hello, part of my dissertation for my degree is to analyse gender commnication online, and for this i need a forum which is less specific than the frank black forum-ie a general chat forum, which is quite well populated, if anyone knows any i shall be eternally grateful

the goat thanks you

You could try the Fox News forum. :P

Seriously, though, I do think this forum is kind of different from other ones I've posted on. I think it might be less geeky, which is kind of weird, considering the subject matter. While I have fun here, I'm not sure I really fit in that well. I guess I'm the kind of person who never really feels I fit in, but I get the feeling that the majority of posters here are the type of people who go to parties and hang out at bars, as opposed to introverted nerds like me.

This is really the only Web-based bulletin-board-style forum I read regularly. Most of the others where I've been a regular have been e-mail lists, newsgroups, and livejournal communities. Maybe the difference in format is somewhat significant. I don't know.

I would say people are weird here, but people are weird everywhere...

I don't know. I've visited some message boards and I think this is a peculiar case.

why do you think this isn't representative of a forum?

whoreatthedoor Posted - 10/11/2005 : 11:11:13
Take the second part of the post then.

it doesn't have to represent the real world... she's studying female/male interactions on forums.

whoreatthedoor Posted - 10/11/2005 : 10:56:54
After all this place isn't representative of the real world. Isn't representative of anything, actually.

no, it wouldnt be fair to write about a forum i already post on, so i'll just find a football one or something (sorry guys, i know thats a big fat stereotype)
kelladwella Posted - 10/11/2005 : 08:13:37
The male dominated forum doesn't happen to be fb.net, does it?
zub_the_goat Posted - 10/11/2005 : 07:58:54
oohh, thanks for the barbelith tip llama thats just what ive been looking for, ive got the MSN news one as well which seems to be pretty gender neutral
Llamadance Posted - 10/11/2005 : 07:50:28
Do you have to be able to take part, or is it enough to just read threads? Try Barbelith if it's the latter, they have several forums, but I've no idea on the gender split. I would imagine it's relatively equal, but don't know really.

yeah, thats what im hoping to do, im just looking for the fairly balanced one
Llamadance Posted - 10/11/2005 : 07:19:48
Could you not use one that is male dominated, one that is female dominated, and one that is mostly balanced, and compare them? Or would that make it too complicated?

thankyou llama and monkey, i was hoping for a forum which wasnt more popular with either gender, so that i could study interaction between males and females online...music ones seem to be the way too go, but even they seem to be more populated with men
Homers_pet_monkey Posted - 10/11/2005 : 06:14:05
A couple of the girls at our place go on handbag.com. I think that is a general one.

I'd walk her everyday, into a shady place
Llamadance Posted - 10/11/2005 : 05:49:40
Most forums I've seen tend to be based around one topic/issue/artist/sport, but they all have general chat sections. Usually that means that there is a gender inequality, ie more males than females. Does that make a difference?

Often the gender might not be obvious either, you'd have to do some sleuthing. The two fastest moving ones I know are mostly male, the other one I lurk on is a running forum. That seems to have more of a gender balance. Would that be better?
