floop, I knew you'd say that. They do. Sort of. It's weird to be offered a corona in a French accent.

Posted - 09/12/2007 : 14:58:55 Floop, maybe you'll start a cherry pie thread now. We don't make cherry pies well here. Too sweet. Like Brian, I started with I'm Your Man just after watching an interview with the man. In the interview he talked mostly about the women in his life but he did it in such a natural and loving way that it it really marked me. Never heard a man talk so comfortably about women like that. Then hearing I'm Your Man just confirmed his hero status. If I hadn't seen the interview first I might have been put off by the arrangement just like jnaus but I just put it down to his sense of humour. And anyway the female backing really helps.

this album is above and beyond anything on this planet(besides, it is the only album of which BF/FB says he has bought it several times). the lyrics of the songs are mind-and-everything-else-blowing.
first we take manhattan - just the best song ever. objectively. everybody knows - never heard the truth as clear as in this song jazz police - insane, out of space and time i can't forget - this is just THE song about losing yourself
this album is a true comforter for any time and any mood.
"10 new songs" comes pretty close, i think. i'm not that much moved by "the future". of course, his early songs are ear worms too, but i can relate much more to his later work - it is more direct, more honest, less abstract, less story telling.

Posted - 09/12/2007 : 04:52:18 I'd have had the same reaction, K. Cohen is as close to God as we've got on Earth. (I love that he named his son Adam.)
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Posted - 10/30/2006 : 20:00:29 I didn't see the documentary, but I bought the soundtrack, and it was pretty much crap. There are lots of good Cohen covers out there, but very few were on this soundtrack. There are several tribute albums, but I think only I'm Your Fan is any good. I was really disappointed in the Tower of Song tribute album, though Tori Amos' version of Famous Blue Raincoat is beautiful. If you're looking to get into Cohen, start with Best Of. Next, try Songs of Love and Hate. If you still like him after that, buy everything you can get your hands on.
And the coolest thing about Leonard Cohen is that I'm named after him. (Not the Leonard part, thank God.)

Posted - 10/30/2006 : 17:29:54 I'd start with The Future or with More Best Of (the 2nd best-of compilation). That's my favorite Leonard Cohen. The documentary that came out over the summer was so-so. Too many mediocre bands (Antony and the Johnsons, Rufus Wainright, U2) and not enough Leonard Cohen. |

I read a reference to "I'm your man" in the 33 1/3rd book. I had Leonard Cohen's 'Best Of' album already and I was familiar with a lot of the songs on there due to plenty covers, etc... So I bought the CD and even though the lyrics are brilliant the arrangements in the background are horrible, very outdated, they remind me of one of those cheap casio synthezisers. For me it was a major turn off. My personal favorite LC song is 'Suzanne'. One side note that might be interesting to know about is that the LC 'Best Of' album and Ween's 'The pod' have the same album cover. Ween basically mocked with the LC version. |

But besides, most tribute albums contain only songs all recorded around the same time, especially for the occasion, and they won't appear on any regular release afterwards. Anyway, that's why most tribute albums suck big time, besides from that hard-to-find track from one or two great artists.
BTW favorite Cohen album = Songs of Love and Hate, but I've yet to hear Death of a Ladies Man. |

Yeah, they should have said "wait, we won't release this tribute album just yet, maybe somebody else will record another great cover of Leonard Cohen within this and three years". |

What's the song where he talks about his golden throat? I always loved that one.
That song should be "Tower of Song", the last song on I'm Your Man. It goes something like "I was born with the gift of a golden voice". Very funny indeed :) |

Posted - 09/20/2005 : 04:23:48 Dunno. Very weak tribute album.
Even the Pixies disappoint. Their cover would have blended well on Trompe, though.

I think with Cohen, his classic "Best Of" is an excellent starting point.

Posted - 09/20/2005 : 04:19:39 i agree, the reason this album is good is becuase it has the lyrical beauty supplied by leonard along with the variety of other artists voices... the only reason leonard is difficult to listen to is the monotinous tone.
r.e.m first we take manhattan is great.

Posted - 09/19/2005 : 12:26:06 I'd simply start with his "Best Of" collection.
Then go for New Skin for the Old Ceremony (my favorite)
Great album. Plenty of simple string arrangements that really fill out Cohen's voice.
