Frances Bean rebels

Sep 7, 2005

The 13-year-old daughter of the late grunge rock legend Kurt Cobain and actress-singer Courtney Love is rebelling against her parents by wearing cute girlie clothes and brushing her hair, according to her first media interview.

Frances Bean Cobain told Teen Vogue magazine that she struggles to step out of the shadow of her famous parents.

"I'm a different person," she said. "I don't want to be titled as Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain's daughter. I want to be thought of as Frances Cobain."

The interview was accompanied by a series of photos showing the teenager looking very feminine.

"I love feminine pieces," she said.

"My favourite colour is light pink. I also like baby blue because it brings out my eyes."
The teenager also sharply criticised her mother's fashion sense, which has included public displays of short and messy lingerie.

"I prefer when she's more 'classy starlet'," she said. "I don't really like her hardmetal stuff, or when she doesn't brush her hair."

I thought I read in Heavier Than Heaven, that Been A Son was about his sister.

I'd walk her everyday, into a shady place

I remember reading way back when that Been a Son was simply about a family that had a girl but really wished they'd had a boy. It was kind of an ode to the old school misconception that women can never measure up to men mentally, physically and whatever else. I remember it in some interview with Mr. Cobain, he made it sound like it had no personal relevance at all.

Yeah, I think that was written before he even met Courtney Love. Maybe there's an unreleased version called Bean A Son!

It's good that she's independant and opinionated. She could turn into the Courtney-Love-it's-okay-to-like!!

Courtney Love has always wanted to be the girl with the most cake. Well Courtney, by the looks of it lately, it seems that her wish has finally come true. Maybe her wish should have ended with just collecting all the cake, and not actually eating it all?

Her daughter Frances Bean gave her first interview and talked about how her mom is always negging her vibes. Like you didn’t see this coming…

DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Mom's in rehab and dad committed suicide, but Frances Bean Cobain seems remarkably poised, considering her age - and life experience.
"I'm a different person," the 13-year-old tells Teen Vogue in the magazine's upcoming issue. "I don't want to be titled as Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain's daughter. I want to be thought of as Frances Cobain."

It's the first interview and photo shoot ever for the seventh grader, who displays a softer, more sophisticated fashion sense than mom and pop, who pioneered grunge in the early '90s.

"I don't like to look sloppy. I'm a girly-girl," says Cobain.

She doesn't like it when her mom looks sloppy, either. "I prefer when she's more 'classy starlet'" - think Love's 1997 Versace-engineered Oscar makeover - "I don't really like her hard-metal stuff, or when she doesn't brush her hair."

Love is reportedly holed up in an L.A. substance treatment center at present. Fortunately, her daughter is already showing much of the wisdom and maturity that mom seems to lack.

"She tells me to 'live free and be free, but listen to other people's advice,'" says Cobain of her mom. "I listen, but I don't always follow it."

The October issue of Teen Vogue hits newsstands Sept. 13.

Was Nirvana's "Been A Son Lyrics" directed to Frances?

She should have stayed away from friends
She should have had more time to spend
She should have died when she was born
She should have worn the crown of thorns
She should have been a son
She should have been a son
She should have been a son
She should have been a son
She should have stood out in the crowd
She should have made her mother proud
She should have fallen on her stance
She should have had another chance
She should have been a son
She should have been a son
She should have been a son
She should have been a son

I humbly disagree. I've read in several places of Kurt's affinity for the late Frances Farmer, who like him was from the Pacific Northwest and suffered from mental illness and was stigmatized for it.

sorry kiki, she was named after a vaseline. if she was a boy they would have named her eugene (the other vaseline). when people asked kurt if he named her after frances farmer he said something like, "no, but that's cooler and i wish i'd thought of that so lets go with it."

she's a pretty kid. i guess now we all know what would happen if you took courtney's first nose and stuck it on kurts face.

i am sitting here observing my emotional discomfort.

Gracie's right! Eugene Cobain has a nice ring to it.

Bean comes from the fact that Cobain was an undergrad at Boston University for his freshman year and he liked the town (Bean Town) but couldn't stand the freshman dorm. That's what my cousin told me.

That is 100 percent correct!

Yeah, we'll just see what she has to say about that if she ever tries to launch a musical career of her own. :P

What? Look at Lisa Marie Presley. She did it all with her own talent.

She did all what with her own talent?

Bean comes from the shape of her fetus on the sonogram, and also the word 'bean' was something that came up in both of their lives often (Kurt wrote a weird song called "Beans" which I think was recorded before her birth).

Kurt named her after his beloved Frances Farmer.
I stand corrected. Thank you.

I can't remember where her middle name, Bean, comes from. Anybody?

I think it was Frances Farmer (of Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle), and possibly someone they new named Frances (like Fracnes McKee).

Not being the Kurt Cobain expert, and I assume this is a noob question, but do you think Frances Cobain was named after Black Francis (from You-Know-Who), or Frances McKee (from the Vaselines), or did Kurt and Courtney simply like Frances for a name?
Homers_pet_monkey Posted - 09/18/2005 : 08:39:36
Surely the same. Even if she doesn't mean it (which we would never know anyway).

So weird. It still seems fairly recent when you saw pictures of her as a baby being held by her dad. Sounds like she's got some class though which is good, must get it from Kurdt.

I completely agree with Kitty.

Besides, this is the most punk thing she could have done.

My friend told me about this the other day, I don't blame the girl to be honest. Let her be what she wants to be. I'd be embarassed if Love was my mother.
