I used to quite naively use purple tentacle as the pub quiz team name. I thought about it after, realised... not so good.

Posted - 09/20/2005 : 02:07:02 Age of Empires III and Civ IV are both out in the next couple of months. Not sure about AoE, but I'll definitely get Civ4. I think they've changed the view a bit, more 3D, and they've increased the religious aspects so that you can convert cities.

I did change my sig but thought it might get annoying... I miss the text adventures though, they used to keep me entertained for hours as an insomniac kid. Have spent some time playing sam n max this afternoon. It was great.

Oh, Nathan, you don't know what you've lost. Nothing to do with the first Maniac Mansion. Awesome graphics, simply incredible. Nothing have been made in 320x200 pixels that could compare with it.

I'd rather spend 2 days of my life playing a great videogame than 2 hours of my life watching a crappy movie. I'm up to 34 hours on Metroid Prime and having an absolute blast. |

I heard about how amazing that game was supposed to be, but my computer at the time was so damn slow that there was no way I could have run it. I love cars, and that one with the old grand prix deathtrap racers seemed very visceral and glorious when I read about it.
When I got my new computer last year someone asked me if I had heard of the game and lent it to me-it wouldn't work on his machine so I tried it on mine but no luck either except for the intro movie.
I love driving games but haven't played them in years (since first grand turismo game on PS1).
All of the true things I am about to tell you are shameless lies
You've hit on one of the games achilles heels. It was too demanding to run properly on the systems that existed when it first came out and by the time technology had caught up to it it wouldn't run as is anymore either. Luckily, one of the guys from Papyrus (the developer) went off on his own an wrote a patch for the game to make it run under Direct3d (which is now a necessity of course). There are also several other tweaks and a slew of updates pretty much recquired too. Virtually every aspect of the game has been "modded" to improve the look, sound, the online playability. It really was amazing to be part of that whole community (the community is still there actually, I've just moved on to other things). But the sim itself is a real beast - very uncompromisingly "realistic". It was simulating an era of F1 racing before such niceties as "downforce" and "racing slicks" existed. The cars were tin coffins on wheels basically and they drove like it. That difficulty was a hurdle that turned many away but if you could get over it you were rewarded with an incredibly thrilling experience - particularly the online aspect which hasn't really been bettered even yet. The only other sim with a strong an online component is Papyrus' other franchise - Nascar Racing 2003. |

Wrong! I think you'll find the best game ever is 'The Secret of Monkey Island' or perhaps 'Monkey Island 2: Le Chucks Revenge'.
