Posted - 09/16/2005 : 07:10:52 I am off next week to Las Vegas for a friends wedding, that time is almost all taken then we have two days in LA, Santa Monica to be exact. Can anyone suggest great places to go, great things to do, top record shops, great places, anything really to keep me out of a bar for two days. Although a recommendation of a bar would be fine also. LA and the surrounding area. Thanks.

cheers fartbone, I take it is reasonably safe then, how long would it take to walk it?
As safe as it CAN be in that area. If I wanted to I guess I wouldn't be afraid of the area but that's just me. Plus my mean face and tattoos help me out a bunch. I would guess it would be a half hour walk? Maybe more since it's uphill. Just try to make your way to Elysian Park Ave and walk straight on up.

i don't know how to break this to you Fartbone, but i'm your doppleganger.
yeah, Yang Chow is probably the best Chinese food i've ever had. and the slippery shrimp is insane. i thought it was my little secret (told to me by an old Jewish man). maybe you're my doppelganger
but i'm the better looking one

go to Yang Chow in Chinatown, order the slippery shrimp.
Man, do I know you?! Yang Chow is so good. The slippery shrimp is the main reason I go there when in the neiborhood. If you walk out and cross the street, there is a seafood store that sells large prawns at the lowest prices I've ever seen. It's my non asian secret.

Posted - 03/07/2006 : 05:22:50 A little bit of a bump on this one, you were all so helpful and it truly was the best place and best time we ever had on any holiday, talking about pixies to a guy that worked in a toyshop, and just really truly enjoying ourselves. So much so we are going back in July for a bit longer and to take in the warped tour, so I need your advice guys. Is it possible to walk to the Dodgers Stadium from the china town metro station? Is it far? is it safe? Finally any other things to see and do in SM or LA, always appreciated.

A friend of mine made the same suggestion. When we got there we saw Lenny Kravitz and his entourage inside. We ran. |

Truly unbelievable and very much worth the trip. I needed to make multiple visits and the staff *swoons* are both incredibly helpful and have unbelievable music knowledge. The used section is both extensive and cheap (especially in comparrison anything I've seen in the the UK)

Just keep in mind L.A. isn't all pretty like the West Side, there's a lot more out there.

farddawg,
no offense taken. i agree with you. i have an ongoing East Side / West Side debate going with myself all the time. i'm always debating moving out that way, because i like it better in some ways, and my girlfriend lives there, but then the beach and the perfect weather keep me here. and i like where i live in Venice.. i like different things about different parts of LA
domestiques,
if you're relying on public transpo i recommend sticking in the Santa Monica area. Santa Monica has the best public transportation for LA, within the city of SM.. but if you're thinking of venturing much further out, it could be a nighmare..
i remember meeting this British couple who were just about to take a bus from Santa Monica to Universal City Walk, and i felt deeply sorry for them. not only is Universal City walk a stupid tourist trap, but it probalby took them 2 hours to get there by bus.
where are you staying in SM?
other bars:
next to Liquid Kitty is The Arsenal http://www.arsenalbar.com/ which is a cool bar, and a good place to meet UCLA students. the music is so so..
further down in Santa Monica is Circle Bar http://www.thecirclebar.com/ which actually kind of sucks, but is a good place to go if you just want to see really hot women..
near the Promenade is Toppers http://la.com/dining/mexicansouthwestlatinamerican/toppers/7860 which is a bar at the top of a hotel. it's not "cool" or anything, but has a great view and good margaritas.
if you're missing your countryfolk you can go to Ye Olde Kingshead, which is where all the British hang out http://www.yeoldekingshead.com/newsite/home.htm , also in Santa Monica
East side i'd recommend the Dresden http://la.com/nightlife/barspubslounges/dresdenroom/18796 and Good Luck Bar http://la.com/nightlife/barspubslounges/goodluckbar/396
Downtown: Golden Gopher http://la.com/nightlife/barspubslounges/goldengopher/31320
Chinatown: Mountain Bar http://la.com/nightlife/barspubslounges/mountainbar/88

Posted - 09/16/2005 : 11:28:25 well, you could just take Sunset up to Sepulveda. it's a nicer drive too. but since the Getty is only a few exits from the 10 that would be acceptable. nonetheless, 405: try to stay away..
also, Domestiques, whatever you do don't go to tourist trap Universal City Walk.. unless you're into that sort of thing.
take in mind you've only got 2 days, you don't want to spend too much of it sitting on the freeway
most of the best Mexican is on the East Side or Downtown. in Santa Monica, Border Grill is good. but a bit overpriced. http://www.bordergrill.com/ Casablanca Restaurant in Venice is very good..
my recent favorite is a place called Casita Del Campo in Silverlake.
also, you can check here if there are any shows you'll be interested in

i will only be asking a small fee for my services |

Posted - 09/16/2005 : 09:24:19 hey, what's wrong with drinkin' in LA?
well, 2 days isn't much time. if you're staying in Santa Monica you really ought to just go down to the beach and chill out. after your Vegas adventure it'll be good to unwind.
are you going to have a car?
the best record shop in LA, and possibly the world, is Amoeba Music in Hollywood. worth checking out.. http://www.amoebamusic.com could be dangerous to your bank account. next to Amoeba is Archlight Cinemas, the best movie theatre in the world (even though it's owned by scientologists [maybe you'll see Beck there]).. http://www.arclightcinemas.com/
not far from Santa Monica is the Getty Museum. which is a beautiful building on top of a hill overlooking Los Angeles. worth going for just for the view. http://www.getty.edu/ plus, museums are a good place to meet international women
i could tell you about my top secret hike but i'd have to kill you. (no, if you're interested, email me. it's seeeeeecret)..
as someone who drinks plentifully in LA i can recommend a zillion bars, but it sounds like you're trying to avoid that. if you're interested in having the best hamburger you'll ever have in your life, there's a place in Santa Monica called Father's Office, http://www.fathersoffice.com/ . finding a table is a bitch so get there early. they also have an excellent beer selection
My favorite bar on the West Side is called Liquid Kitty, more in West LA. it's kind of a dive, but the music is excellent and the bartenders are cool.. http://www.thekitty.com/
hope you enjoy your trip. stay off the 405 freeway. speed up when merging on an onramp. don't ask anyone where you can "get some fags"..
may the force be with you |
