I'm not really into ska, especially punk-ska like Less Than Jake, but Fishbone is great. They're ska right?

I don't think I've heard the Specials, or maybe I have but just don't know it.

yeah, fartbone is great.

You see Denis, you didn't need to impress C, nor myself after all. But hey, at least you got two great records.

I just bought the Specials' first album.
That's about all... I just wanted to look cool in front of Carolynanna.

Just noticed that The Toasters are on tour now. They'll be at Slim's in SF in October with Mustard Plug.

I'm seeing them again in about a month. My friend's band is playing with them (www.myspace.com/offbeatinsuburbia). How do I keep getting dragged to these shows?

The Slackers are very cool. I have watched them countless times. Better to see them in the States as some of the members of the band are not allowed to ply their trade here in Canada.

If you're going to check out some modern ska, try a band called the Slackers. They're quite good.

I don't understand listening to ANY one genre of music entirely.

And as much as I love Police Squad, I believe ska actually predates reggae.

The live version of Stupid Marriage always brings a smile to my face.
Have you given a listen to some of the newer ska that is out and hangin' around? Try Catch 22, The Next Best Thing and for some Bedouwin Soundclash.
You are right though, the Specials rock. Neville Staples is still touring and playing some Specials.

From Police Squad!;

Dick Clark: "Johnny, some kids on the show yesterday mentioned a new kind of music-Ska. Know anything about it?"

Johnny: "How should I know? Nothing but a modern off-shoot of reggue with updated, white-rock influences-definitely upbeat. But it'll never become really popular, because even though they've made the back beat more conventional, it's still too exotic for mass exceptance."
Homers_pet_monkey Posted - 08/29/2005 : 11:05:56
Ska is musical genre that I will never get. The Specials are an exception though.

Rancid and No Doubt kind of kick-started a little ska/reggae punk revival in the 90s.
HeywoodJablome Posted - 08/27/2005 : 08:43:18
We had a barrage of really bad ska bands here in the 90's. I'm still trying to forget. I do like the Specials though. I always enjoyed the "Too much too young" live cd. What's the song where they go through the "Hush up! Hush up!" routine? That always cracked me up. "I'll say that again, IS EVERYONE HAVING A GOOD TIME!!!" Good stuff.

The Specials are pretty good. I've got a few friends who listen to ska exclusively, so I tend to get sick of the genre pretty quickly now (they drag me to waaaay too many ska shows). I definitely like bands like the Specials more than these awful third-wave ska bands.

Good dance music for sure though.

Its what happens when you get absorbed into the NJ Ska Scene. I swear the people in there are like a cult. They go to all the shows (at least every weekend) and suck you in. I've been able to resist fortunately.

Ghost Town is fucking great, a song I regularly play.... one of the best singles of all time imo.

This is a high class bureau de change, not some Punch & Judy show on the seafront at Margate!

Right on. I barely listened to the Specials but brings back good memories of $5 Less Than Jake shows in Gainesville, FL 10 years ago and the music/shows of ...

The Toasters
Skatalites
The Pietasters
Jumpstarts
The Miggedys

Back in the day, you had your punk and you had your ska. Along with good rock (Floyd, Zappa), they formed the trinity of 70s music.

While American punk bands gave British punk a run for their money, the only ska was English ska.

And so it was.

And it was good.

Unquestionably one of the finest bands we'll see. The first two albums are both killer. A couple years back I picked up this 3-disc compilation of theirs that had all their b-sides and a bunch of versions and such - until hearing this I had thought they just called her quits in the early '80s. Glad you brought this band up, I haven't thought of them in a while.

Nothing is ever something.
Cheeseman1000 Posted - 08/25/2005 : 10:13:35
Love it, nothing beats dancing to the Specials.

Too Much Too Young, Message To Rudy, Nelson Mandela... Ghost Town is probably the finest song ever to hit the top of the charts here.

How's that for a slice of fried gold?
Carl Posted - 08/25/2005 : 10:04:17
They've got some great songs. FB picked the Ghost Town video when he hosted MTV's 120 Minutes show back in the day!
