Posted - 08/13/2005 : 07:52:09 I don't know how many of you are/were Soundgarden fans but I caught Hater at the Knitting Factory last night which is Ben Shepherds' (SG bassist) band that he now fronts. He takes guitar and vocal duties in this band and it was interesting to say the least. He seemed shy when he was in Soundgarden never really exhibiting much personality but that wasn't the case last night let me tell you. The music was pretty good if you like your riffage raw and loud, it was like some undulating psychedelic rock with that heavy Seattlesque feel to it. He had an accompanying guitarist, bass and drummer who were more than capable. Ben couldn't seem to keep his guitar up in it's strap which drew jeers from the 100 or so in attendance and he would respond by saying either "Fuck off" or "Fuck you!" Highlights include him dropping his Red Stripe lager, pick it up as it foamed and spilled all over the stage and him making some indiscernable but obvious derogitory comments to the crowd. Then at the second to last song he chucked his guitar across the stage and spent the remainder of the set singing on the drum riser (which the Hater drummer had set up in front of). He kept feeling the wall as if he were on acid and the wall was nice and furry. Kind of a crazy show which I rather enjoyed, definitely had an unpredictable vibe about it which is not something you see a whole lot of in bands these days. Also, nice to see that a guy who was in an ultra-successful band is still willing to take a chance on some music that is not going to be played every ten minutes on KROQ. Check'em if they come near you.

Posted - 08/13/2005 : 08:04:31 They are just doing a west coast tour apparently (California, Oregon and Washington State). And they have a second record cleverly titled "IInd". And Matt Cameron is not playing with them which I believe he did on the first record.
