What are some things that you've recently learned that you never knew before?

Mine aren't funny but heregoes;

Chickpeas are Garbonzo beans.

Raspberry muffins turn blue when cooked so maybe that's why raspberry flavours like in candy or popsicles are blue.

Really? That's interesting. I figured they just made those things blue because they'd used up their quota of red with cherry and strawberry.

That's what I thought too.
Now ya know.

Yes! There's a Breville behind the bar.

Pigs are the cleanest barnyard animal - they keep a separate lavatory area in their pen.

If you've lived in the same house for at least three years, your credit rating is massively higher than it otherwise would be.

Feet sizes are measured in barleycorns.

The Cape Of Good Hope is not the southernmost point of Africa.

The word 'flanging' referring to the effect a flange pedal has on a guitar sound, was invented by George Martin - John Lennon asked him to explain the 'washing' sound achieved by Automatic Double Tracking on Revolver, so Martin said: "we feed your voice through this and that and treat it with a double bifurcated sploshing flange."

How's that for a slice of fried gold?

WRONG!!! It's 90 feet between bases. 60 feet 6 inches from the rubber to the plate.

Continuing with two easy typo questions:

• What's the difference between serif and sans serif?

• How many points in a pica?

Also,

• What is the origin of the word "fuck"?

• How did Morrissey and Billy Duffy meet?

• Explain the iguana reference in the Breeders song "Sinister Foxx."

Crab sticks have actually been forced to be named Crab Flavored Sticks, due to the fact that they are not 100% Crab.

i'm not usin' google eeeeder. :)

gerund was a freebie.

wether: i'm impressed! i often ask people if they can define the three uses of the word weather/whether/wether. 99% can't. and i didn't mean to insult.

Valentina Tereshkova is correct (except she was technically a SOVIET cosmonavta). 12 is the right # of folks to grope for Luna.

FDR ran for President more than anyone else (and won more too). 90 feet rubber to homeplate.

and yes, Johnny Allen Hendrix was his name until Al (his dad) came home and changed it to James Marshall H. b/c Johnny Allen was one of his mother's old boyfriends. he performed as Jimmy Hendrix with Little Richard on the chitlin circuit and was performing as Jimmy James (with his band the Blue Flames) when he was 'discovered' in the village. i listened to nothing but Jimi for abt. 2 years in college--major religious experience for me.

and i'll take your next round of questions at your leisure.

Game on, Toba! Just as I am assuming you used no extra help, I will wing this google-less:

*first woman in space?
I wanna sing Lou Reed's "Ride, Sally, Ride" but it's actually Valentina Tereschkovava, a Russian. Whereas Sally Ride was the first female American astronaut.

*person to run most # of times for office of US President?
Search me.

*length (in feet) from pitcher's rubber to homeplate (keep it clean) in baseball?
I dunno from baseball.

*which Wright Brother flew first?
Vegas odds give me 50/50, so I'm going with Orville. Could be Wilbur, tho.

*What's a gerund?
You insult me. I once received a fan letter complimenting me on my exquisite use of the gerund. I have also taught writing (as well as typography) so this isn't useless info, it's work. While a gerund looks like a present participle (both end in "ing"), gerunds function as verbal nouns.

*What is a castrated male sheep called?
You insult me yet again. I live in the most agricultural county in the most agricultural state in the union. The answer is: wether.

*How many people have walked on the moon?
A dozen

*First stage name of Jimi Hendrix?
Another trick question, eh? Not falling for it, Toba. Jimi Hendrix is his stage name; his given name was Johnny Allen Hendrix

You will receive you next round of questions soon, Toby. Meanwhile, keep practicing those three-pointers.

Broccoli is the plural form of broccolo. Never really pondered that one.

"Can I have a piece of broccolo, please?"

BRING IT ON!

my turn:
*first woman in space?
*person to run most # of times for office of US President?
*length (in feet) from pitcher's rubber to homeplate (keep it clean) in baseball?
*which Wright Brother flew first?
*What's a gerund?
*What is a castrated male sheep called?
*How many people have walked on the moon?
*First stage name of Jimi Hendrix?

there you go.

For some reason, I laughed for hours when I learned that chickens have a life expectancy of 20 years. That just seems ludicrous. The poor things are so weird as it is.

It's legal to divorce a woman by saying this:

"I break with thee
I break with thee
I break with thee"

and then put dog poopy in her shoes.

Guinea pigs and rabbits can't sweat.

Deer can't eat hay.

Every citizen of Kentucky is required by law to take a bath at least once a year.

In Breton, Alabama, there is a law on the town's books against riding down the street in a motorboat

In New York State, it is still illegal to shoot a rabbit from a moving trolley car.

In Saudi Arabia, a woman reportedly may divorce her husband if he does not keep her supplied with coffee

This thread could spell danger for me. I retain so many stupid facts yet can't recall what I had for breakfast.

Sharks have three sets of teeth and two penises.

James Dean's last words were "That guy's got to stop, he'll see us."

Franz Ferdinand, the archduke's, last words were "It is nothing, it is nothing."

Franz Ferdinand, the band's, Alex Kapranos was voted this month by Esquire magazine one of the world's best-dressed men.

A human fetus' heartbeat is way faster than an adult's; a female fetus' heartbeat is faster than a male fetus'.

The wingspan of a boeing 747 is longer than the Wright brothers' entire first flight.

Before she became a star, Sheryl Crowe sang background for Michael Jackson.

Pigs can't look up, though I'm not convinced. I'm sure that someone told me as a child that pigs were the only animal that can't swim too, so I am taking it with a pinch of salt.

good thread.

more people die every year as a result of falling vending machines than shark attacks

the word hysterical comes from the latin word histerectomy, meaning removal of the womb, so therefore can only be applied to woman
