Apparently, they've confirmed the existence of a tenth planet of the solar system, called '2003 UB313'. Catchy.
You'd think this would be bigger news...

Let's go, toba! What three things would I bring? Hmmm...
since you'd be bringing your Ipod, I'm guessing you'll have Pixies and FB stuff on there, so I wont need my cd's. I'd have to bring some dvd's...can I throw a bunch in a folder and call it one item? If so, I'd bring about 300 movies (big folder). A box of blank paper and pencils to draw. And a never-ending supply of Newcastle. That's a lot though. We could use your laptop for the dvd's, and you can have some of my beers...deal? Who would I bring? Dang...no one at present. I'm so excited.

(reminder--voyager's been going since 1977, nearly 30 years, and is approximately 94 AU (1 AU=sun-earth distance, or 14 Billion Kilometers) and is travelling something like 60K kilometers/hour and will reach the distance of our nearest star (outside the solar system of course), Proxima Centauri, in about 80000 years.
who would you bring along with you, if you could last the trip?

I wish I could travel the solar system. I stayed up all night in 1989 and watched Voyager 2 transmit live data from Neptune. That was so exciting to me.
I would give up my life on Earth to sail the solar sytem, all the way through the Kaiper Belt, into the termination shock wall, through the Oort Cloud, and travel a million miles an hour through the heliosheath until the sun's gravity finally gives out and I swim out into nothingness...a black void between systems. No stars. Maybe a black hole! But there would have to be gravity...probably pockets of radiation...trapped heat...who knows? I wanna go! Who'd go with me?

Thanks, toba. I'm still confused by this whole 2003UB313 thing. It seems very fishy.
I'm also still positive that Voyager 1 was launched after Voyager 2. I glanced through those links, but could find no proof. I will look further when I have more time though.
If anyone can support me with info, please do, because it's going to drive me crazy. In '77, I was in 2nd grade, and did a report late in the year about the two probes...and I remember that being one of the first clear cut examples of the word 'irony' to me...that although Voyager 1 was first, it was launched second.
Anyway, now I'm on a rant...and wearin' Beckett's pants...

Poor Pluto! Somewhat off-subject, but are Voyager's 1 & 2 still transmitting data? They have got to be way out in the Kuiper Belt by now...I remember scientists speculating that we will be able to continue to recieve data all the way up to 2030. Since Kuiper theorized this belt 90-some odd years ago (if I am not mistaken), wouldn't NASA have thought about making sure the Voyagers would burrow deep into it? And also, didn't NASA launch Voyager 2 first, which met up with Voyager 1 at Jupiter (I think V1 was on a shorter trajectory and got there some 8 months early)? I remember how exciting all that was! Isn't the solar system cool??!! I love it!

I think that would be harsh on Pluto. I understand that its size is an issue, but then it does have a fairly sizeable moon - relatively speaking - which IMO makes it more like a planet.

I read a while back that astronomers had decided that the orbital eccentricities of the outer planets could be accounted for without the need for a new 'planet X' and i think since then, the search for a larger '10th planet' has been put increasingly on the backburner.
Yes most kuiper belt objects are icy rocks but the problem astronomers face is one of definition - when is a rock a planet?
Because astronomers last century called Pluto a planet, they now feel obliged to call any other body of comparable or greater size a planet.
Lots of people think that Pluto is also a stray body from the kuiper belt that just happens to be that bit closer to us (and thus more visible) than the thousand of other perhaps similarly sized object further out.
There is even talk of Pluto being demoted from its planet status!

But isn't a Kuiper Belt object considered an asteroid or chunk of debris? This sounds like they're definatley saying it's a planet, which would excuse it from a Kuiper 'object'. As far as I recall, the Kuiper Belt starts after Uranus which would include Neptune and Pluto as planets 'within'. I'm confused by this 2003UB313, because what was the thing they found 26 years ago? Is this it...just confirmed? Does anyone remember the thing dubbed Planet X? There's so much creepy stuff out there, I love it!

It's a 'kuiper belt object' and although bigger than Pluto it must have a maximum diameter of less than 2000km apparently.

I remember back in the late 70's there was a tenth body they detected (but obviously could not see) by gravitational mathematics beyond Pluto...they shortly called it Planet X (ex, or ten). About ten years later they theorized an Oort Belt, or cloud, made up of billions of comets and debris. Then a couple years back, as someone stated above, Planet X became Sedna, and, again via mathematics, was supposed to be as large as Saturn. So, is this new 2003UB313 what was called Sedna, or Planet X? Or is it an 11th planet? I'm very confused...and is it in, before, or beyond this Oort Belt? (Is what I'm thinking the Oort cloud or belt what the Kuiper Belt is?) I used to be fairly up on this stuff, but I've become rusty.
