Posted - 07/27/2005 : 11:08:29 My football (soccer)team, Glasgow Celtic have just started their season with the first game in a hopefully long and glorious run in European competition (probably short and disastrous). There's been a lot of changes at the club in the close season - new manager, many players out and some new ones in. I'm not entirely happy with events, but as in all things, time will tell.
So who is your team, what sport, how they doing, are you happy etc?
Hopefully some friendly banter will arise :)

Posted - 08/02/2005 : 12:05:05 Saviola is likely to make a loan move to Espanyol. Barcelona have a great team but I would have kept Riquelme and Saviola as back up for Ronaldinho and Eto if I were them. They didn't do too badly last season though. Perhaps with Riquelme and Saviola on the bench though, they would have been able to overcome Chelsea in the end.
As for Yeovil, they were the best team in your division by a mile last season Domestiques, but I would have loftier dreams than that if I were you. Why not wish you had an affinity with Barca?

Many Celtic fans have an affinity for Yeovil due to them playing in the hoops.
Stevio10 - sheesh, you've met a fair few players. Don't think I've met even one. Saying that, I've not really lived in Glasgow since 1991 and that was while I was at university (no time for drinking;)
I've never really understood why Barcelona let Riquelme go (it was them, yeah?), maybe he wouldn't fit with Ronaldinho. He was shaping up to be a superb player. Is Saviola back at Barca?
bazza - fingers well and truly crossed. I'll be amazed if we keep a clean sheet though.

And now you have lost your best player. He was a bit of a hothead (and a bighead by all accounts) so maybe you are better off without him. He will struggle to get into Crewe's team anyway. They have signed a few strikers.

Hehe, it's amusing sharing the same name as a Celtic player! I actually met him once...he, Rab Douglas and Joos Valgaeren were in Bamboo one night (terrible place, got dragged by friends!) and the temptation to "swap" bank cards was hard to resist!! I know a girl who went to school with him...and I found out through her that I can do more keepie uppies than him! Need to get on the phone to Terry Butcher so he can sign the "next Stephen Pearson". Boom boom.
Big Rab was chatting up some girl...but he dropped her(!) Nah im kidding, I thought Rab did quite well for Celtic, just his mistakes are more memorable than his heroics (always the case with every player).
I've met Neil Lennon and John Hartson too! Met Lennon twice, first time was my first shift working for the first time working in a bar about 4 years ago. In comes Neil Lennon and stunning girl ordering a pint of cider and some girly drink. Here was me trying to put a head on a pint of cider!! I met him again last year or 2 years ago in the special re-opening of the Garage nightclub. Suffice to say he didn't recognise me!
I met John Hartson on a work night out in Jinty McGinty's in the west end of Glasgow (thats where I live and have done for the past 5 years...up in Shetland recuperating after an operation just now) and he also was with a stunning girl. I said hello and he was very polite, though I was quite drunk!
Personally, I used to support Aberdeen when I was younger (being the closest team to me and having 2 brothers and a parent supporting them too) but there comes a time when you realise, "I'm not from Aberdeen...I'm not a true fan" kind of thing. And i'll be honest they weren't playing the best football in the mid to late nineties. I used to follow Scottish football relgiously from the late 80's to mid 90's but I just lost track of it. Im keeping a closer eye on it now as I have a bit of time on my hands, good to see the likes of Hibs, Hearts and Aberdeen improving.
I've kept a keen eye on Spanish, Italian and Argentine football. Loved Argentina and Maradona ever since '86 (most Scots will agree! In a joking kind of way!) The team I like to watch most in Spain is Villarreal, I love the way they play. I know Celtic fans might feel aggrieved to have lost to them in the UEFA cup a couple of seasons ago but they're a classy team, finished 3rd in La Liga last year and have one of the best playmakers in the world in Riquelme (the new Zidane!)

Be nice to team him up with Owen or an in-form Ruud.

I thought McLeish was a good move by Rangers at the time. Tactically he seems good, though his eye for a player is a bit suspect. Strachan had a good last season at So'ton, but tactically seems a bit naive. Unless it's a total disaster, I hope Strachan is given a decent amount of time.

Hmm, yeah, if we lose, the calls for Strachan's resignation will be deafening. We've also given everyone in the SPL the belief that they can beat us after the result midweek.
It was a shambles that Falkirk didn't get in last season, hope they do well. First game against ICT....Brewster's got them playing well, - a draw?

Posted - 07/28/2005 : 11:16:45 I only went to see the stadium again. It's a nice stadium to look at. There was no game on sadly. I also went to the San Siro which was simply awesome. A really imposing site. Bit scruffy inside but still impressive (even though the pitch is in poor condition).
My stay in Roma was excellent. The food, architecture and women were as beautiful as ever. Florence was even more impressive.
And yes Bazza, I heard about the result. The Ruud problem doesn't bother me too much yet. I still have faith in him. I still worry more about the amount of chances we create rather than finish. We still need a top class midfielder to come in.

My number one boys are the mighty Manchester United (enough of this Man U rubbish please). I am not gonna go into the politics surrounding the club right now, because quite frankly I wouldn't want to bore you all, and I would always rather concentrate on the actual football.
We'll be better this season but we still won't beat Chelsea to the Premiership title.

Posted - 07/28/2005 : 06:10:24 Cool topic Llama!
I happen to have two football teams I follow.
The first is my hometown`s Bundesliga-team 'Hertha BSC Berlin'. They failed to qualify for the champions league last season and are therefore playing for the UEFA-Cup in the next. If things go normal, they will be eliminated from this competition in the second or third round. 'Hertha' is in desperate need of a good (or even average) striker, but other than a few minor acquisitions has not been very active on the market. Everyone else has, so I´m not too sure about next seasons´s performance. It´s a good team though, with a strong defence and a potentially brilliant midfield. Bundesliga starts in nine days. Can´t wait.
The other team is the ‘AS Roma’. I lived in Rome for a year and still have family there. They had a disastrous last season. After an exodus of quality (manager Capello, Emerson, Zebina, Samuel, Cafu) they went through all kinds of chaos. The society was always on the verge of bankruptcy, the remaining team under three different managers (Völler, Del Neri and Conti) struggling not to get relegated and miserably failing in the CL (even had to play without supporters for a few games because referee Frisk got hurt by a fan in a home game). I hope the team will find to more stability under the new manager Spalletti. He has to work with what players he got, because of an UEFA-verdict against the club, that forbids the acquisition of new players for a whole year(!), and may even loose another few, because of the clubs need for money. With the great three Juve, Milan and Inter buying like crazy, I´m quite sceptical about the next season. They still got great players left, and if they manage to find some team spirit... who knows. So, forza Roma!
I just found out: they played against each other in a friendly game yesterday. After a 2:2 in normal time 'Hertha' won in the penaltys. |

I'm not really interested in footy, although I had a ticket to see Man U on Tuesday when they beat Beijing 3-0... should have gone really but I knew it would be a crap game.
I love Rugger, so I guess I occasionally look out for my home team Bristol. My biggest passion though is watching England rugby team, and British Lions... when these two teams win I am on a high and when they lose its like some bastard has stabbed me with a knife. As you can guess its been a rough summer with the Lions doing so badly.
I will forever love Woodward for his part in the 2003 world cup victory over the Aussies.... but he pissed me off this summer with his mindless choices when it came to Lions selection. He really fucked up his reputation on this Lions tour, whatever he was thinking is beyond me, and 95% of the rugby loving world.

You also got £200k for Paul Telfer from us.
Can only think Woodward is there as a fitness coach and maybe to devise ways for the players to improve technically. Very strange though.

You think you have problems? Try starting a division lower than where you belong! I'm a Saints fan (Southampton FC) for what good it does me. We were relegated last season after forever in the Premier League, and I still haven't decided whether we'll be good for bobbing straight back up or not. We've had to let go the star of last season (6'7" striker, Peter Crouch) to Liverpool, among others. Antti Niemi looks to go, if he hasn't already.
But we've got some old faithful, and Harry Redknapp's a canny coach. I'll be interested to see how the combination of him and Sir Clive Woodward works out. I hope it means Rupert Lowe butts out.
Oops. In answer to your questions: Southampton, football (soccer), don't know how they're doing as the season hasn't started yet, no I'm not happy.

The bullpen is the relief pitchers that come in later in the game. They ususally sit on a bench behind the outfield fence or along the foul line waiting to be called into the game. That's the bullpen.
Deadly rivals? Well, the Red Sox and Yankees hate each other. Thomas is the only Yankees fan I know of on here. So, I guess we're rivals. I also don't particularly like Brian's Mets, because they handed the Red Sox a bitter World Series defeat about 19 years ago. |

A bullpen is the name for the group of relief pitchers who come in when the starter is either in trouble or is simply worn out/gets hurt.
The only teams that the Mets are really rivals with are the Yankees, as we share a city, and the Atlanta Braves, because they routinely kick our asses up and down each year. But i'd say we have small rivalries with all the teams in the National League East (Philladelphia Phillies, Atlanta Braves, Washington Nationals {formerly the Montreal Expos}, and the Florida Marlins).
