In which you can post your argument as to why a particular band/artist/musician is so great, and face the consequences. You'll have to deal with disagreements - so, please post disagreements as well!
I'll start with:
The Smiths
Generally, Morrissey is one of those that polarises opinion - you either love him or you hate him. Me, I can't find much appeal in his solo stuff, but in collaboration with Johnny Marr I think there is true genius.
Morrissey writes some of what I feel to be the finest lyrics in the sphere of popular music, and introduced a whole new approach to the process. Johnny Marr conjured up the sound that about a million bands echoed from then til now.
More than that, the songs work as a cohesive whole, as singles or as albums: 'Hatful Of Hollow' is basically a collection of singles and B-sides, yet it contains some of the finest tracks of the 80's. 'The Queen Is Dead' has only one memorable single on it, but is one of the greatest records of all time.
I give you The Smiths.
