Where do you stand on this? I used to be unsure but after working in what has to be one of the worst nursing homes in the UK I remembered a conversation I had with my father, he asked me if his mind went, if he couldn't look after himself and his dignity was lost I was to let him go and help him die.

I think I probably would.

and you're questioning the sciences
and questioning religion
you're looking like an idiot
and you no longer care.

It probably will be legal soon here. There are some dangerous legal side effects, I guess.

Anyway, as a future suicide man as I am, I am pro.

Very slippery slope.

One reason against it is that in some cases doctors will be pressured to pull the plug by those benefitting (financially) from the death...

However, if someone makes it (legally) clear that in certain situations, death would be preferred, it should be honoured...

Tricky stuff.

I'm all for euthanasia in a controlled way. It's possibly become more difficult in the wake of Shipman, and I think one of the main problems is to ensure it doesn't become carte blanche for doctors to pull the plug. I don't know if the way to go is to assemble a panel to oversee it initially - ie to decide if it's warranted/legal - but it's one possibility.

If people truly wish to die, I've never seen whay business it is of ours to stop them. It's their life to lose.

If someone is in agony, or in a stste where the can't do anything at all and are completely miserable and helpless, then I believe it is justifiable.

Have we not become desperate in this life to help one another end it?
it makes me sad to relate to this, the idea of death by nursing home kills me. i know there are good people out there taking care of us when we get old and thanks if you do, but none of us seem to trust our own communities to watch over us in old age. even if you are treated kindly it's still you the dying, and them, the not. i wish things were not rigged this way, that we knew all through life that we would not have to be put somewhere else to die.
As a species are we malfunctioning?

euthanasia is legal in the Netherlands under extreme circumstances
I agree with that
but it's very hard to agree on the 'circumstances'
which are 'extreme' and which not?

More cheer, fb.net-stylee! Yeah!

Seriously, this is an important topic, especially in the States. My best friend's wife is a nurse and my legal guardian or whatever it's called. She's legally bound to pull the plug if need be.

In extreme circumstances I agree with it. I never used to but I do now.
