Posted - 07/06/2005 : 14:10:54 Dave is saying that images produce a negative environment in which woman feel that they can't measure up to the high standards. Rather than having a man and two men moderators protect the environment for women, why shouln't one of the moderators be a woman. Rather than having "men thinking for the women", give the women a voice. No one woman is going to represent the feelings or thoughts of all of the woman (certainly Dave isn't representing my male thoughts), but maybe it's a step towards a more steady and defined policy. |

Posted - 07/08/2005 : 11:46:53 Darwin - it seems to me the majority of comments are actually about posting images of women, and that they think they should be able to, and that it doesn't demean women.
I don't doubt that some people are also upset with my attitude. If you re-read the thread i started (picture of beautiful women thread), i tried very hard not to be demeaning. In my first few postings, what specifically did i write that was demeaning, rude or insulting?
After a pile of insults, and people demanding the 'right' to post images of women, i lay into them a little more. Even then, i believe i was pretty reasonable, and kept the 'personal' issues to a minimum. (Not none, but pretty reasonable, all things considered.)
I agree that i'm not a better person than anyone here, and i don't mean for people to think i am. That is just a way to sidestep a point...being that i'm resposible for this Forum.
I think i *do* have the background to determine the possibility of someone feeling inferior because of the postings. What if i, myself, feel demeaned? What if people have written me complaining? Do i let them go and post, and take the heat themselves? (And do i ignore my own feelings?)
Again, it is very clear that people don't like to hear that posting and looking at pictures of women might upset others, not might not be appropriate or even desirable for this Forum.
And yes, women do have different experiences from men. I don't understand how this diminishes my own experiences, nor whether or not i can determine if a topic is demeaning to women, or anyone else.

Posted - 07/08/2005 : 01:08:26 Darwin, you've really managed to impress me now. There are some very interesting points which you make in this thread which reminds me of a quote that's not really relevant but could be in a slightly different situation:

Posted - 07/08/2005 : 00:57:07 I'll revise my admitedly sexiest comment that implied that women are usually more diplomatic. "I doubt most people would have been as brash as you were ...." You're wrong, if you think this firestorm is about pictures of women. It's about you being rude and demeaning to us. You aren't smarter than us, you aren't better informed than us, you aren't a better person than us. So, please quit acting that way.
I in no way said that only the people being discriminated against should stand up against that discrimination. But, this is not a clear cut case of discrimination. It is you thinking that women will be insulted or be made to feel inferior by images of other women being posted. I don't think you have the background to judge that. And if you think you do then why do feel that "totally that we should have a few women as Mods"? Is it because they have backgrounds and knowledge that you don't have? |

Posted - 07/07/2005 : 21:08:29 Um..being sexist to defend sexism? Sorry, i don't think that floats.
I don't believe you have to a member of whatever 'issue' to be able to discuss or defend it.
To say that a man cannot stand up against the exploitation of women is to say that white people cannot defend blacks, nor the young defend the old. (And it would also leave my main area of concern completely off the map - animal rights. I am not a pig in a factory farm...how do i know of what they suffer?)
And besides all this silliness, it's clear that a progressive view of sexism and the significance of objectification is very unfamiliar ground for many. (Sorry if that sounds patronizing..that is not my intent.) I certainly misunderstood it for many years, and thought that 'letting women work and not pinching their butts' was what it was all about....and i was an idiot for not looking any deeper all those years.

First serious issue is that, as seen in the backlash to me, certain principles are not accepted or welcome. I doubt that if a female Mod had raised the issue i had, she would have been given any more respect than myself, and would have been equally abused.
I disagree. First, to be a bit sexist (sorry) I doubt she would have been as brash as you were and second she would speaking from an experience with the issue that you (as a male) can't have. I have much better time believing a woman saying something produces a negative atmosphere for woman, than believing your guess that it does. |

I agree totally that we should have a few women as Mods as well. (No idea why anyone would think we wouldn't go for that, care to elaborate dayanara?)
First serious issue is that, as seen in the backlash to me, certain principles are not accepted or welcome. I doubt that if a female Mod had raised the issue i had, she would have been given any more respect than myself, and would have been equally abused.
Second, we have certain qualifications for being a Mod, and that includes a demonstrated amount of level-headedness, fairness, openness, good listening skills, and having a good sense of 'when to act, and when to ask'. We must also completely trust that person. Finally, the person needs to be in a similar mindset as Dean, Brian and myself.
It's not easy finding a good Mod. That said, we *are* looking into it. No decisions will be made until Dean gets back to having semi-regular internet access.
