Posted - 07/06/2005 : 05:01:53 So, London got the Olympics. I personally think London deserved the Olympics more than any of the other bidding teams.

How's that for a slice of fried gold?
That's exactly what I was thinking on Thursday night.

Posted - 07/08/2005 : 02:30:02 My take is that the timing of the attacks is more to do with the G8 summit than the Olympics, but if it is al-Qaeda, they have a reputation for meticulous timing of these things - the world's attention is on London right now, with the Olympics and Live 8 just recently. I just hope that these events don't swing the focus of the summit to the 'war on terror' - I hope that the issues that were scheduled to be discussed (climate change, trade regulations and global poverty etc.) are given as much time as they would have had. You can't help but think these attacks are timed to put people's attentions back to terrorism and the Middle East (if, of course, it does turn out to be al-Qaeda related). It's like the terrorists want to escalate the problems that much further, which is a worrying thought.

Posted - 07/07/2005 : 18:41:28 I know, I just thought maybe if they knew the date that the winer was announced, they might have taken that into account, in case London won it, as they did, and that it might have more impact on people. It's just pointless speculation really, I'm just musing. We don't really know who did it and why, even though Al Qaeda are obviously in the frame. |

Posted - 07/07/2005 : 18:32:12 You know, I forgot that London won the bid to host the Oylmpics. I don't know if the timing of this terrorist attack would have anything to do with that announcement. |

Posted - 07/07/2005 : 13:27:42 At the actual event? Not sure about that, they may consider it too long ago by then. We'll see I guess. It would be nice.

Posted - 07/06/2005 : 07:33:28 well hopefully it'll get more british kids into sport at the very least, i dont think the british public has been particularly behind the bid until the last week or so when it has mainly been just to piss off chirac, which im not so sure about, but i reckon we'll pull it off, should be interesting to see what they do |

Posted - 07/06/2005 : 06:31:07 Not sure if it is something to cheer or bemoan.
Will London (and the UK) benefit in the long term? I'm not convinced. Apparently £1.5 billion of the funding will be sourced from a special National Lottery game. Therefore investment in the rest of the UK will presumably be £1.5 billion light over the next 7 years.
And these things always overspend. Dome, Wembley...etc..etc

Posted - 07/06/2005 : 05:37:22 Chirac's quote is pretty funny in retrospect, I wonder if it had any effect on the bid. The political relationship between the UK and France does seem to have got significantly worse over the last couple of years, we don't seem to be able to agree on anything at all :D I think without one another we may just turn on Spain.
On a related note, apparently Paula Radcliffe has been advised not to run in the 2012 Olympics, as you shouldn't shit on your own doorstep.
