HereŽs Rosalind Franklin. She was a molecular biologist who was cheated out of public recognition for her work on the DNA doublehelix theory for whick Crick and Watson got famous for. She also has some pleasing physical characteristics which I could comment on if I was a woman. But if I was a woman then maybe IŽd be digging pictures of Crick and Watson.

Crick and Watson

Watson was SO much cooler when he worked with Sherlock Holmes. Or Alexander Graham Bell.

if this thread had been allowed to continue then it might have been something really cool, i actually felt educated, again i see how it could have been seen as a joke but already it was becoming more...yeesh, we're not all ganging up on you dave noisy, can we just stop this now? set some guidelines and be done with it?

I feel like I'm partly responsible for this ban. Myself and the other posters do not suck, and I had no intension of posting risque pictures. This is insane. I'm really annoyed, and I hope this is just a temporary warning thing.

so i can post what ever nipple-free, genital-free pictures i want, as long as they're not in a thread devoted to pictures of women. right. got it.

i am sitting here observing my emotional discomfort.

I can see why the intention of the thread could be misconstrued as going against what Dave requested, however the reality of the thread is different. It's the thread he wanted but didn't have when he insulted people by calling them shallow. Name calling does nothing for the gender dynamic on forum, in fact makes it worse. The reality of this thread was that it celebrated the achievement of women (beautiful crystallography) and was a little educational, and may have continued to be so.

I don't even know he took the time to check this.

What policy was violated here? The closest I can find to a stated is the following:

"dayanara - the rule is no thread is to be a dedicated 'beautiful women' picture thread. It is sexist, shallow, chauvinistic and patronizing, to mention a few things.

I have *no* problems with an occasional *on topic* 'she's hot' kinda thing. I *do* have a problem with a thread being dedicated to this. One reason is that i strongly object to the objectification of people, men or women. It generally results in less respect for those who don't 'meet the standards', and for many it is also very demeaning."

What was sexist about this thread? How is my posting of an image of Jane Goodall sexist? I genuinely admire the woman and yes when I was a little kid I had a crush on her. What's the problem? Can we also not have thread discussing without pictures how cool or smart someone is because we can't all 'meet that standard'? Why are images so different?

This forum is going to lose alot good people over this ridiculous episode. Do none of the other moderators have anything to say?

Are you kidding? The x-ray crystallography of DNA picture?
Oh right all pictures.
Weirdness.

Veronica Lake. A classic beauty. And I don't find her in the least bit offensive!

Hedy Lemarr FTW, TBH.

Losing sight of the original joke, wasn't Franklin also not a PhD which partially explained her getting shafted on her deserved credit. Maybe she had her PhD but there was some lame excuse given.

Jane Goodall - ground breaking primatologist. Went to Tanzania on her own with very little experience to habituate and observe chimpanzees in their natural environment. Discovered many things about chimps, such as tool use and carnivory. Also, a bit of a hottie and her photo was deleted with the 'beautiful women' thread. She's also very much responsible for my career choice. Thanks Jane.

[Picture removed]

Crick and Watson who did most of their work on the DNA structure theory in the pub. The structure they came up with (the double helix) was I read founded on a mathematical error because what they had to work on was not all the research that had been done on the subject (Rosalind Franklins x-ray crystallography work which is thought sadly caused the cancer that killed her in her late 30's) although Franklins supervisor (who hated her) showed Watson one of the pictures she had taken (which are beautiful) and thats when the double helix theory clicked into place.

In defence of Miss Franklin, science at the time of her doing her work was very male driven and there was a social as well as academic divide between the different sexes at the time, men only pubs etc etc. It's easy to understand why she would be so bitter.
