Is anything creepier than sharks and their beady eyes and three rows of teeth?
No, I say to you, no!

I live hundreds of miles from open water, yet I fear the suckers. I literally cannot look at a photo of a shark. I either avert my gaze or snap the page shut.

What are you irrationally phobic about?

Kath - some pics that will make you change your opinion about sharks:

A baby shark learning to bite swim.

A left-wing shark.

A playful shark entertaining kids. (OK it's a montage, but you'll certainly admit this touching scene is credible.)

"The story of a boy who befriends a baby shark on the South Pacific island of Bora Bora. And together they set about to prevent prospectors from destroying the coast line".

Uh... funny, isn'it?

Three weeks ago a great white attacked a student whilst he was diving. All that was left of him was the glove of his diving suit. It happened not far away from where that lady was killed.

Cape Town - The Great White which killed a Matie student at Miller's Point at the weekend tossed the young man's body into the air, a witness says.

"There was blood everywhere," says Dr Grant Munro.

Late on Monday afternoon, police divers called off the search for the remains of 22-year-old Henri Murray.

Munro says the shark was about 5m long.

"The first time, I could only see the fins, but when the shark came back the second time, I could see it better.

"It was a massive thing, as big as a car".

Murray's friend, Piet van Niekerk, watched in horror as the Great White ripped Henri to pieces.

Henri and Van Niekerk had been spear-fishing when he was attacked about 200m from the shore.

You lost me at "backstroked into the jaws of ...."

That phrase will haunt me the next thousand times I backstroke, albeit in a
pool hundreds of miles from the ocean.

Some of the world's biggest great white sharks are to be found in False Bay, Cape Town. There has been a few horrific attacks in False Bay over the past few months. One of these a 77 year old lady backstroking into the jaws of a shark

Brian de Jager, a friend of Mrs Webb's and one of the 15 local people who witnessed the attack, told the Guardian: "I took my usual walk and I saw Tyna swimming. The next minute I saw this fin coming through the water and then the discolouration in the water. It was so quick, it all took place in only 30 seconds."

A red swimming cap was all that was found, despite a sea and air search.

Other witnesses said the shark had been six metres (19ft) long and circled Mrs Webb before attacking.

Craig Lambinon, a spokesman for the National Sea Rescue Institute, said crews later spotted the shark from the air. "The shark is bigger than the helicopter ... it is huge," he told the South African Press Association.

That sounds horrifying. HORRIFYING. I would die of a heart attack as they lowered the cage.

This morning one of my former students told me she is about to study in Australia for three months, beginning with diving in the Great Barrier Reef (yikes!). But she's also doing this cool thing outside Cairns (sp?) where you go on the world's longest monorail (7.5 km) up the rainforest.

You wouldn't believe what I had to do to see if the coast was clear in here.

Curiosity got the better of me. I wanted to go great white watching in one of those cages in Oz but it cost about £400 so I gave it a miss. They can't even guarantee a sighting. I thought it might help me overcome my fear. Not sure I would have actually managed to hand over my money even if I had it.

My wife swam with sharks when she went to the Galapagos islands. I think they were about 6ft long. She said she was pretty scared, and every time one swam under her she couldn't breathe.

KOK reminded me that Leopard seals are also very scary and attack from below.

Slightly in keeping with the thread, I'm scared of dentists.

I never really thought about it, but one Google Image search later and I'd have to agree- sharks are fricking creepy. And I've never even seen any Jaws films..

Stumbled across a gallery of human shark-attack victims. Lovely.

I'm quite afraid of sharks but at the same time love to surf. Sometimes I'll be WAY out in the water, I'll look down and can see nothing. Not even my feet. There's mostly white sharks up here. I'll be sitting there and realize that if a shark hit me right now I'd be as good as dead. Some of the beaches I go to will have dead seals on them with guts hanging out. It freaks the hell out of me to be honest with you. I just try not to think about it. last august a kid was hit at Pismo on a tiny day. It knocked him off his board and when he popped up a foot and a half tall fin was going by his face and the side of the shark brushed him. Then there were a bunch of sightings all around my surf spots. That kept me out of the water all winter. I've been chased by a BIG bull sea lion. Like a grizzly in the water. That freaked the hell out of me too. It was more aggressive when I was trying to flee. It was coming at me but then I turned and yelled at it and it backed off. He was pissed. He was dominating this cove in Big Sur and I rode this rip out and and went up this incoming wave and thought I saw a rock on the other side. As I came down the back of the wave I created a tight circle of me, him, and a female. Me in the middle. He started screaming at me. His head was huge!
This doean't really depict their size but they are huge. i'd say over a thousand pounds

My cousin Matt has an insane thing about zebras. Not so much fear as hatred, I think. If he sees a zebra on TV he starts ranting and screaming about how they are "unnatural".

i'm not irrationally afraid of sharks, but the beaches here are closed because they keep eating people, 4 or 5 in june. not even big sharks, mind you. they just swim right up to the beach and chomp on you until your leg comes off.
