This thread is dedicated to those very special [Non FB., Pixies, Breeders & Martinis] shows that are so good it takes your breath away.

Ok here's to start it off 50 Foot Wave.

Ok... for those of you who don't live in Minneapolis, the show was at one of my favorite bars to see bands-- the 7th Street Entry. It is a very intimate club with an old school punk rock vibe.

There were two opening bands... which could have headlined in their own right Maps of Norway and the Slats.

Ok now that I am writing this, I know a lot will go uncaptured. Hopefully the essence will get across. But if you go see them (as many of you might when they open up for the Pixes you will be blown away).

50 Foot Wave sounds great on a cd. But when you see them live... you get this old school punk rock vibe with very cool, talented and precise musican skills.

I was literally in amazement the entire show... that I was seeing them in such an intimate place. Before this show, it had been at least 10 years since I have discovered the joys of listening to a great Punk Rock band and being at show. It was nostalgic but also incredible.

I have seen a lot of shows of great bands... GBH, DRI, the Ramones and others I can't remember. Legends.

But for some reason the combination of seeing a great band that gives punk rock a new twist at a great venue makes this my all time favorite punk rock show. For the most part most of the crowd were very old school fans that have been around since the Throwing Muses days.

If I knew my TM t shirt was from 1988… I would have proudly worn it. But that’s a good excuse for me to get it out of storage and get props for being old school at another 50 FT Wave show.

I don't have a music background, and I wish I could describe it better, but every note & and every drum beat just filled my ears up and just make the coolest combinations of sounds. There style is so unique that although I am comparing them to punk rock... its a new sound, too. Kinda like punk rock plus- but that description doesn’t even come close. I know there are alot of musicians there that could describe what they did to get this sound, but its the most beautiful punk rock style music out there. I guess what I am getting at is it is a more intricate version of punk rock. You really shouldn't miss them if they come to your area!

The band put on such a great show and really put all their energy in to a stellar performance. Kristin even stayed to chat with fans after the show.

I feel lucky to have seen this concert....and heard all the beautiful music.

I can totally relate. I'm not a pit person, but I made an exception for Helmet. If you're interested with an excellent live video of a concert of helmet, give me a shot at gauthy@gmail.com and I'll guide you either to an ftp or a bittorrent.

I saw jane's for the first time at Coachella, having missed them earlier in life due to living too far away from the city. but the BEST Jane's show I saw was opened by Stereo MC's (who also were amazing) and it was awesome. Strippers and debauchery everywhere. (see I am also pro-boobies, just in context, reference: 'ridiculous' thread)

Best show I was too stupid to enjoy: Johnny Cash at a tiny little rodeo. Was too fucked up to have absorbed it all and I've kicked myself ever since.

Helmet last year in Houston, in a small club. Same club where I've seen FB twice by the way. I've rarely felt so great. Maybe because the crowd was not full of teenagers...

Paul Westerberg in Norfolk a few months ago was damn near perfect.

By the way, if Mike's still watching, Spoon played Car Radio during the encore. The show was (think of one word...) impressive.

Great show that was.

I love the story because it reminds me of the night I described. Angelo dove into the crowd a couple of times, and it impressed me more than any other time I've seen it. I don't know, there's just something about him that absolutely seizes my attention whenever I see him - though the whole band is pretty interesting to watch. That first night after one of the opening bands played I went to the washroom, and coming out with my head down I plowed straight into the sternum of one physically gigantic bandmember, who just gave me the hugest smile ever. I felt like a geek so I just smiled and hurried away; I've always wished I'd stood around and tried to talk with him, because he seemed like he'd be up for it. Too late now.

Nothing is ever something.

I thought this was a thread about girls who lick their boyfriends' ears, which is something I truly appreciate. Nevermind.

I really have no idea whether the physical exertion of childbearing has any impact on musical performance. It was basically just a devil's advocate type of argument.

As for your original point, though, it kind of seems to reflect the idea that, once a woman becomes a mother, that's all she should do. Which isn't an idea I care for or agree with.

Really, though, musicians should stop having kids. That gives them less time to concentrate on their music. :P

A bitter feminist, are you, VV?

Seriously, you can exert physical effort or whatever and still retain your groove. Ach.

Well, there isn't as much physical effort involved in fathering a child. Still, though, I can see what you're saying.

In its entirety, the 6/15/5 Boston Globe review of the previous night's 50 Foot Wave set before the Pixies:

"Motherhood has hardly mellowed former Throwing Muse Kristen Hersh, a more vicious Pixies than any in the band that followed. Her trio 50 Foot Wave was astonishing quantities of raw noise."

Daisy, will you forgive me? I missed 50 FW because I am a bad person who instead chose to flirt with a tall bartender who kept chatting me up and making my drinks stiffer.

Also, am I the only one who finds that review sexist? People rarely comment on whether fatherhood has made a man less hip yet they often scrutinize whether motherhood has taken away a woman's edge.

I guess instead you'll just have to stew in those jealous juices while I enjoy what I expect to be one of the best shows I'll see this year. That's just too bad...

Nah, I wish. Spoon's playing Vancouver. It's going to be a serious pain in my ass because I'm working in Winnipeg right now. I get to fly home to Edmonton on Thursday, collect my travel mates and leave on the half-day drive a couple hours later. I'm counting on the show blowing me away to make up for the inconvenience.

I hate you too, because you don't get to come. Also because you always rip Bruce Bowen, one of my favourite tenacious pricks.

I've seen two shows that qualify as GREAT this year, Kings of Leon and The Black Keys. Both were incredible shows. The Black Keys were at a small venue with good sound and it was incredible.

Nice to see a Fishbone shoutout too...

Interpol hits the stage in about 7 hours, I could make it down there even if I
don't speed. Damn!

LCD Sounsystem can fuck right off as far as I am concerned. They are shit. I can't believe they got on that bill.

Read it and weep, homers: tonight at 7 LCD Soundsystem, Interpol and Pixies.

I moved heaven and earth to go but failed.

When I saw Interpol at Manchester Academy last December I was gobsmacked. It all got a bit emotional for me during NYC. That band just really 'get me'. You know they do if you don't mind shedding a tear amongst thousands of strangers.

I can't wait to see them again next month, albeit at a larger venue.

I guess floop WAS right!

I dunno what gobsmacked means but I am jealous. They're the opening act the night
before I see them (in NY) - ggrrrrrr - but I get to see 50 Foot Wave open the next night
and, hopefully, feel some of the thrill Daisy's talking.

When I saw the Pixies' first reunion show, I sobbed, just sobbed
for the first few songs.

WHAT!? Interpol are supporting Pixies!?

Oh my god, that's pretty much the perfect gig for me.

I'm a guitar player and one of the most unreal guitarists is Tuck Andress of Tuck & Patti who I saw at the same theatre the Pixies played when they were here in Winnipeg, an old Vaudeville stage.

As the music started I felt euphoria, envy, lack of sleep and had hallucinations. That was something...

Brian Wilson performing SMiLE last year--the highlight of my life, without a doubt! The only thing that could ever come remotely close to topping it would be if I ever get to see Tom Waits live (not that he's a better musician, but his live shows are amazing).
