In an attempt to appease Kathryn, here's a thread with something for everyone.
Everyone has to work at some point I guess, even if what you do doesn't necessarily fall into a standard category of job.
Myself, I work in a university administration department, and I very much enjoy it (unusual for office jobs I think). The work is perfectly bearable, but I'm surrounded by a really great bunch of people, and because of them I have no objection to getting up and going in each day. The possibility of seeing one's real-life-crush from one of the other admin departments makes no difference, of course.
I started as a temp, and got a permanent job there last summer. They've finally got round to advertising the next post up (which I've been halfway to doing already), that's Admissions Officer as compared to Admissions Assistant. Interview's on Wednesday, if anyone has any handy hints.
Go on, tell us about your job, love it/like it/loathe it. You never know, someone might be interested.

I'm Industrial Engineer, and I work in a IT Distributor, I'm in charge of IBM Software Area, so I have to work with a lot of IT resellers developing middleware software projects. Although is complex you can't be bored because always you have differents projects with different clients and my team is very nice. I'm happy with my work.

I work at two college libraries. I'm a reference librarian at one, and a circulation assistant at the other. I should be switching over from circulation to cataloging soon, though. I enjoy both of them, but they're only part-time and I don't make much money, so that sucks.

i got sacked on monday.i was fired for usein the register when the "till girl" was in the toliet after the boss specifically told me not to.was i supposed to do stand there and look at the customers like a fuckin idiot.fintin mac mahon if ur a secret frank fan and are readin this.you are a fuckin tool
BTW if ur ever in kildare in ireland dont go to maxol in brownstown because he sells dirty petrol out of date bread has rats and criminally underpays staff

I am a Clinical Research Assistant for Pediatric Oncology. And on my days off I also help my husband in our Plant Nursery business.
When I am wearing my CRA hat I do everything from getting a children enrolled on one of our research protocols, verifying eligibility, checking labs, helping with samples, reminding the doctors of procedures that need to be done (etc., etc.,)...to...getting a new study ready for submission to our IRB (Institutional Review Board). One of my specialities is taking a research protocol and writing a consent form explaining the study in lay language for potential participants. I also am usually the lead on our quality of life studies.
When I am wearing my Nursery hat I help with watering, transplanting, and loading and unloading our delivery truck with orders. It is absolutely the best workout around, and a nice balance to my other job.
All in all I really can't complain.

yep.
severe skills shortage across the entire country, but especially in Western Australia.
seems to be really affecting the potential of the economy.
and the pay over here is very good.
much higher than in NZ.

They are falling over themselves to get skilled workers in Australia. They will pay £300 a week for hairdressers. That's a lot more than they get here and the money goes further there too.

I am a student, I had on an average week 6 hours of lectures, when not at lectures I am either asleep or bungled up in a coffee shop working through notes/assignments or sat at the computer getting papers and things for assignments and revisions and the like (the like being dicking about on here). Now lectures are over my days comprise of sitting at the computer revising for the exams (and dicking about on here). Exams finish next monday and I have technically two weeks off before my two months of lab work starts, these two weeks will be spent with a short break to the cornish coast and working on my dissertation and three essays and lab preparations. After this a month of write up followed by a couple of weeks of vivas and tying up loose ends. It's not a bad life, as it stands. If there were any money involved it'd be better.

I work as a studio manager for an ad agency and as a web mistress for an adult site (though that's more work avoidance than anything else - internal politics blah blah, I dare say that'll go the way of the porn and soon be history). I love my job and most importantly the people I work with are like family to me.
As for interview hints - be enthusiastic, smile and for goodness sake don't grab the interviewer's butt and call her a sexy bitch.

I work for Gaumont-Columbia, as a writer and hopefully as a screenwriter soon. Actually I just finished the first version of what may someday become my first (commissioned) screenplay.
I love my job, the only problems I face are my occasional (and probably inevitable) doubts about my ability to do it well.

My official designation is a Research Scientist. I'm really a post-doc who is looking for a permenant tenure-track position. I actually think that this job season (which is in the Fall) I'll probably have some pretty good luck finding a faculty job, but we'll see.
In most ways my job is fantastic. I don't have set hours. I show up to work whenever I want and I can wear whatever I want. Most days I spend 3.5 hours taking care of my son and my daughter (if she's out of school) and then about 5.5 hours at work. My job is doing research, writing papers, and helping undergrad and grad students do experiments. I like the research and I have total control over what I do the research on. I love being on a college campus, and I missed it in my previous two jobs in downtown Santa Barbara and out in the middle of nowhere in western Michigan. And, finally my office is only a 15 minute bike ride from my house. Very nice.
Bad parts: the pay is ok, the complete freedom and lack of deadlines that I have means that I have to motivate myself (sometimes it's hard to not just screw around all day, thanks fb.net), and the people at work are nice but no one there is much fun to joke around with (which I had in previous jobs) |
