Hello, I am a new guy who loves FB. I am always looking to expand my musical horizens, and figured what better place to find out about good music from people who like the best.

Anyway, my question is... what are your 5 favorite CD's? You can list more or less if you prefer. I know this is hard to do, and if possible exclude all FB from the list, for obvious reasons. Looking forward to hearing some opinions.

All those lists are well and truly excellent, lots of horizon-expanding material here. I just want to add one particular gem that doesn't seem to appear in any of them:

Heavy Vegetable - Frisbie

I jumped on the Frank Black Bandwagon/'Cause Pixies are so 2004
Z_Zoquis Posted - 08/31/2005 : 04:42:36
Lots of good stuff on these lists. X, Camper Van Beethoven, Husker Du, the Beatles, Sonic Youth - that's all gold. It's really hard to come up with a list like this becuase you have to leave sooo much good stuff out.

Heres mine:

Elvis Costello - This Years Model
The Ramones - Rocket To Russia
Velvet Underground - Loaded
The Pixies - Doolittle
The Clash - London Calling

Honorable mention goes to:

The Lyres - On Fyre - theres lots of great garage rock songs on this CD, but it gets on the list solely on the basis of "Help You Anne," which may be the single greatest garage rock nugget ever written.

:)

The Beach Boys, Pet Sounds
The Flaming Lips, Zaireeka
Guided By Voices, Bee Thousand
Fugazi, The Argument (or Red Medicine. Impossible to decide)
The Residents, Meet the Residents

The problem is that Pet sounds has reached such a state of renown that sometimes I don't know whether I truly think it's the best album ever made or whether I just feel obligated to say that.

I also really like White Trash Heroes by the Archers of Loaf.

I voted for these three albums a couple of months ago for a radio poll, and I still feel ok with it.

1. Sunflower - Beach Boys
2. Bryter Layter - Nick Drake
3. Weezer (blue) - Weezer

I think it is, or I wouldn't have listed it. I have no idea whether you'd like it. It's kind of folky, and it includes a few novelty songs. If you're turned off by that kind of stuff, maybe you wouldn't dig it.

Atonal piano melodies by some dead guy (right hand doesn't necessarily match up with the left hand). Enough chaos, so when a melody comes in, it seems like beams of sunshine finally bursting through the dark clouds.

I'm biased, and it's the one album that would best summarize me.

I love Shostakovich. I was really surprised and happy to find out that his music is used for the full soundtrack to Eisenstein's "October" (amazing movie, one of the best). My stepmother used to practice this piece just about every day. One of the only good things she gave me.

My favorite Shostakovich piece is "Violin Concerto in A Minor", though. It's probably my favorite music of all time, actually. Incrediby stirring, emotionally and intellectually. A lot of the themes in that seem to be the completed thoughts from the October soundtrack.

Thanks for bringing the Preludes and Fugues cd to my attention. Something on the radio recently made me want to find them.
