Posted - 05/06/2005 : 14:28:13 ...a beer-belly without giving up the sauce? I'm 6'0, 175 lbs...height/weight proportioned, and not in bad physical shape without having gone to the gym now for a couple years (lazy). However, my metabolism seems to be slowing as I get older (I'm almost 34), and it shows in the gut. Any exorcise/nutrition tips to shed this area a bit without being too strenuous? I know running helps, and I used to run a lot, however shin-splints have lately become a bore.

You mean a lecturer? I hope it's not the same guy (after I have insulted him and all) plant biochemist this guy, name of Hooks? can't dance for shit (but makes mean eggnog)?
I just googled UK national team and I don't think there is one, there seems to be about a hundred.
looks tiring this frisbee game.

That's it. He's a lecturer at Exeter in Cornwell. I think that's a new university. But, I don't think it's same guy. The guy I know is originally from South Africa, but seems very British to me.
Man, I love Americans, they crack me up. Exeter is in Devon, not Cornwall. And its a new university compared to Oxford/Cambridge which are about 800 years old.
Quite why you should be familiar with the details of English geography escapes me, but it tickled me.

In our study, the effect of the alcohol-rich meal on energy intake was not significantly different from the effects of the other meals. Thus, alcohol did not stimulate energy intake, as was been reported when alcohol was given as an aperitif (52) or with dinner (B Buemann, S Toubro, A Astrup, unpublished observations, 2002). Other studies did not, however, report any difference in energy intake after alcohol compared with carbohydrate or fat intake
no significantly higher calorific intake with alcohol but
After the alcohol meal, net fat oxidation was greatly suppressed, even more than after the carbohydrate meal. Also, carbohydrate oxidation was relatively low after the alcohol meal considering the carbohydrate content in this meal (43% of energy). This was probably due to the fate of acetate, the major product of ethanol metabolism in the liver (59). Acetate is released to the circulation and primarily oxidized, probably with priority over other substrates. Furthermore, acetate released into plasma inhibits lipolysis
are a bit clearer from a later article, fat retention it suggested is caused when consuming alcohol with a meal because the metabolism of alcohol causes production of acetate which inhibits the breakdown of fats..
make more sense?

Shin-splits shouldn't be a problem if you stretch properly before and after and don't over-run. Vary your running also. Rather than running the same thing every day, have on and off days, distance and workout days (such as 800's, hills, etc.; you have to build up your muscles and endurance); and also have on and off weeks--maybe every two or three weeks have an off week where you don't run as far and your workouts aren't as intense. If you do everything properly, you shouldn't have any problems with shin-splints (except perhaps some minor discomfort in the beginning). Sorry if I sound like a cross-country coach.

then reward yourself with a cold beer
Running up or down hills kills my knees.
If your knees really bother you cycling or swimming is better, but both take more time than running. Other good fat losers are racquetball, basketball, ultimate, anything fun that makes you move alot.
Just 'cause you play raquetball doesn't make you a fat loser! :P

Actually, it's your belly.
When the liver swells, you can actually see the outline of it above your abdomen.
But, nevertheless, it was funny.

Posted - 05/06/2005 : 15:57:26 You know, I watched this great show PBS about dieting and overall health. It broke down all the myths, explained everything you ever wanted to know about all the fad diets out there (atkins, south beach, etc.) You name it! It was the best, most accurate documentary on the subject I had ever seen. I tried doing a search on the PBS website for it, and couldn't find it. (Unfortunately I don't remember the title.)Which is quite sad, since I would recommend watching it for anyone wanting to improve their overall health and/or belly.
Basically the bottom line is eat less calories (focusing on good fats, carbs, proteins and of course fruit/vegs) and exercise more. The only way to do that is to educate yourself on what your are eating and how much your burning.

He got quite mocked for this, we said to him it should be an olympic sport like curling and pointed and laughed a bit. He went off in a terrible huff until he came back with more drinks we didn't ask for and danced badly to James - Laid.

Posted - 05/06/2005 : 15:30:24 Ultimate - might be called something else in the UK, it's kind of like your football but you're throwing a frisbee and you can't run with it, it involves a lot running try to get open and trying guard the other team
floop - I agree, running is the easiest, I go for quick 25 minute runs, I like cycling but that has to be for at least an hour. |
