Posted - 05/04/2005 : 13:30:49 Anyone out there listening to this? It sounds pretty great. I bought it but didn't open it because when I bought the Phantom Menace soundtrack I noticed track 11 was "Qui-Gon's Funeral". So I downloaded and dumped it onto my iPod and didn't look at track names.
Anyway, there are parts where I get shivers down my spine. It sounds like it's going to be a pretty tense / big movie. But then, I already knew that... :)

Only one? But what about the time-honored comedic tradition of listing the particularly annoying things multiple times?

Posted - 05/07/2005 : 07:59:43 Here's the extent to which Star Wars has become part of everyday life....I was in a pub yesterday, and in among the various radio songs that were playing appears Duel Of The Fates!! I mean, how may instrumental pieces from soundtracks get played in the pub? Also, The Guardian's Friday Review supplement had a '40 reasons to hate Star Wars' article(of course, Jar Jar Binks is one of them!!). Even though I agree with some of the things the journalist was saying, it was a very annoying piece because it was written in that typical broad, flippant journo-speak way. |

Posted - 05/05/2005 : 22:24:29 Yeah, Carbon Freeze is spectacular. Particularly when Han is about to be frozen, but also the song after that and Lando's change of heart. I also agree on the chopped bits. It REALLY aggravates me that we have that scene with Vader departing from Bespin and saying "prepare my shuttle" or whatever and the music is butchered there. Not to mention that the voice sounds different there.
Anyway, it's cool to know that I'm not the only one listening to these soundtracks. :)

Posted - 05/05/2005 : 20:10:51 Yeah Phantom Menace was great in parts, Duel Of The Fates is great, but I think Williams' original soundtrack was hacked up when Lucas recut parts of the movie very late, I'd like to hear it the way he intended, perhaps there'll be a another release with all 3 of the new movies soundtracks.
My favourite piece from the originals would be the "Carbon Freeze" suite from Empire, great stuff. |

Posted - 05/05/2005 : 19:01:24 You can't beat the Imperial March. I have that transcibed for guitar in magazine, along with the Cantina and Throne Room(so western!)themes from A New Hope.

Posted - 05/05/2005 : 17:59:38 Yeah, Empire is definitely tops. I love that second disc in particular, start to finish. Though the first disc has a tonne of great tracks too, but the second disc is like a best of or something. Everything in Cloud City, Imperial March, Yoda's Theme, the closing credits, just terrific.
Jedi's pretty good, too, (with some notable exceptions). The Battle of Endor and the lightsabre duel are some of the most impressive pieces of music John Williams has ever done I think. Phantom Menahce has some good moments too, but a lot of space between them. Attack of the Clones was pretty uninspired I thought, I only like Across The Stars.
And VoVat, I think that's what I was hoping. Almost exactly.

Just because there was a funeral doesn't mean he was necessarily actually dead. Maybe he could have popped out from behind a tree and said, "Ha ha, I'm still alive, bitches! You just cremated a Qui-Gon-shaped pile of mashed potatoes!"

Posted - 05/05/2005 : 14:10:52 Yesterday evening we watched Episode II... And fell deeply asleep halfway through it. When I saw it at the cinema I thought it was OK, but yesterday I realized it's a terrible movie.
I'm eagerly waiting for episode III though.

Posted - 05/04/2005 : 22:34:59 I've heard so much about the story, but I'm sure there'll still be a good few surprizes(Lucas has hinted at a big twist, or something like that.) I'm actually optimistic about this one. I'm actually a huge fan of the Lord Of The Rings soundtracks, but then I love those pics. |

Posted - 05/04/2005 : 21:49:20 Why don't you try it with this? I would say it probably does alter it, but not in the way you're thinking. There aren't really any connections being made with real life because there's not enough time usually between the soundtrack and movie release. It sort of... gives you premonition. You know something bad is coming up. You subconsciously remember a musical cue.
I found the whole part of Phantom Menace after Qui-gon and Obi-wan got separated duelling Darth Maul _really_ tense because I knew what was coming and somehow, since I had tried my best to convince myself that maybe I hadn't seen "Qui Gon's Funeral" in the tracklist really briefly, that maybe there was a way out even though I knew there wasn't.
So it sort of intensifies any tension I guess. Also, if a movie is slow at a part, it seems to go by a little quicker because you're also saying "Oh, *that's* why the music did that" subconsciously (and sometimes consciously) as you match the two up in your head.
On the negative side, I suppose it could take a little surprise out, but not much because you really don't know WHAT is going to happen, only that something is. It can also be a little distracting when the music is cut differently on the CD because you have a part going in your head and suddenly the film changes. With the special editions there are a few places that do this, and having listened to those soundtracks for years (and seen the movies many times) it is very distracting. It's probably not as bad on a first time view, but...
Anyway, I suppose a person can never wear two sets of shoes at the same time, so it's hard to compare, but there you have it. Why don't you try getting the soundtrack and listening to it a few times before, just so you can see what it does or doesn't do for ya?
I'd be curious if anyone else has ideas or insights on this too, as I've not done it often.

Posted - 05/04/2005 : 21:34:54 i'm curious, doesn't hearing the score before you see the film kind of alter it in some way? i guess it could enhance it. but then, you don't have the connections with the film plot that go with it. but the ones you've already made in real life. if that makes sense..
i'm not a STAR WARS nerd myself.. but i am a film nerd. i think if i were really looking forward to a particular film i might want to avoid getting the score till i saw it. but then, i've never tried.

Posted - 05/04/2005 : 21:31:42 <sigh> I know. Still scary but oh-so-tempting. Do the clips have any spoilers? Also, what do you think of the soundtrack, especially since you've looked at the tracklist. It's always a little different when you hear it without any frame of reference other than familiar passages of themes from the other five movies (like, say, the Imperial March or the Force theme). The positioning of some of those tracks - particularly the latter - is kind of a spoiler in a way, though of course it's totally based on my own theories and I could be way off. So it's not really a spoiler at the same time.

Posted - 05/04/2005 : 20:56:40 None of the track listings reveal any major spoilers, so you can go ahead and take a look. You're going to want to open it for the DVD. Its really boss. Its an hour of music played to clips from all six movies that tells the story of the entire saga. Worth checking out.

Posted - 05/04/2005 : 15:35:27 I have to wonder at the choice of putting John Mayer's "Your Body Is A Wonderland" on the soundtrack. They only play two seconds of it in the actual movie.

Posted - 05/04/2005 : 14:43:28 Cool. I would've just sat there and watched the entire recording session. And payed good money to do so. I really would like to see Mr. Williams conduct. I found that listening to the Phantom Menace soundtrack really made me like that movie a lot more than I might have without it. It's almost like watching a music video.
This music is really just great. I'm excited just to hear the London Philharmonic do the old classics.

Posted - 05/04/2005 : 14:09:17 I read the big article in Empire magazine, and they were saying some of the cast were milling around during the recording sessions and were quite effected by the music. I have the The Phantom Menace soundtrack, I like that Duel Of The Fates. Hav'nt heard any of this yet. |
