Posted - 04/30/2005 : 15:37:15 I realise this is a pretty marginal subject, but still...
I'm dying down here. There's one point to divide the bottom four clubs, and three of them have to go down. Obviously, I want Southampton to stay up, and we've done ourselves the power of good beating Norwich. Now we're ahead of Palace on +1 goal difference. West Brom have got Arsenal and Man Utd coming up, they're on their way South. Norwich absolutely needed a win today and didn't get it, so I'm thinking they're on their way too.
Really, it's down to the biggest match of the season next week - Southampton vs. Crystal Palace. It'd be crazy to write anyone off given the situation, and ideally it'd be both teams to stay up and Portsmouth go down, but I think Southampton might nick it and stay up. It's Man U on the last day, so there's always a chance of 6-3 there...
Anyway, this probably makes no sense to most of you, but the tension's killing me here.

Massive perhaps.
Unlucky Simon, it sure was an exciting last day. I found it amusing that Man City missed a penalty in the last minute. Missed by a scouser too. Great stuff. Some of my friends were gutted, but hey it's not like they were gonna win the UEFA Cup next season (or ever!).
Well chuffed for Robbo and Keiran Richardson.
I guess floop WAS right!

Posted - 05/15/2005 : 13:08:41 Worse still, Niemi. I guess Crouch will go, but he's a future contender for Footie Focus' 'Cult Heroes'. Phillips is kind of old, maybe he'll stay. We do have a massive great squad though, it could use a little pruning.
I'm a little pessimistic about coming straight back up actually. A couple of years maybe, but look at Coventry, or Leeds. Forest even.

Posted - 05/15/2005 : 13:04:50 Yeah, and Ipswich could still go up, which makes it even worse.
And it makes no sense. In fact, it's conclusive proof that there is no god.
Will you have to offload Phillips, Crouch etc?

In what world does this make sense? Next season, Southampton will be playing Hull City, Wigan Athletic will be playing Chelsea.

Posted - 05/15/2005 : 12:50:08 I hope so. If anyone can do it, Harry can. I definitely agree with his point about too many managers/players though. Mismanagement at a higher level is the problem.
It's nuts though. Who likes West Brom? No-one, that's who.

Posted - 05/07/2005 : 12:33:16 Manchester United 1, West Bromwich Albion 1
Norwich - Pld 37, For 42, Against 71, GD -29, Pts 33 Southampton - Pld 37, For 44, Against 64, GD -20, Pts 32 Crystal Palace - Pld 37, For 39, Against 60, GD -21, Pts 32 West Bromwich Albion - Pld 37, For 34, Against 61, GD -27, Pts 31
So it's still anyone's game. Here's the situation for Southampton playing ManYoo next week. Lose and we're definitely down. Draw, and we need Norwich to lose, and the other two to lose or draw (we have a better goal difference than them all). Win, and as long as Norwich don't also win, then we stay up. I think it's definitely still possible, but there's absolutely no way of guessing it.

Bring on the maths for next week, there's all sorts of permutations still. Southampton 2, Palace 2 Norwich 1, Birmingham 0 West Brom to play Man U later, but as it stands:
Norwich - Pld 37, For 42, Against 71, GD -29, Pts 33 Southampton - Pld 37, For 44, Against 64, GD -20, Pts 32 Crystal Palace - Pld 37, For 39, Against 60, GD -21, Pts 32 West Bromwich Albion - Pld 36, For 33, Against 60, GD -27, Pts 30

Good man. I was always a bit too lazy to go to the matches - I haven't been to St Mary's yet, and the only time I went to the Dell, I saw Matty Le Tissier's awesome free kick against Wimbledon that used to be in the MOTD titles.

So anyway. Season's full of upsets, as it turns out. Liverpool beat Chelsea? Who'd have thought it? So they can now win the most prestigious title in the world, and possibly they would still not qualify, at the expensive of near-neighbours and bitter rivals. Funny old game, innit.

Posted - 05/02/2005 : 14:30:30 I'm pretty sure that's what I heard. Southampton have been top flight since the late 70's, I think, so other teams have been in the top division longer, but Southampton hadn't been relegated in the second division for a long ol' time. It's one of those convoluted statistics that you can twist to fit anything, I think! In fact, Southampton were in the second division when they beat Manchester Utd in the FA Cup final, not sure if you're aware of that...
And Shiney, I take it you're not being facetious. Conceded goal = goal scored against you, maybe?
By the way, those keeping up, WBA lost to Arsenal today, so...
Southampton - Pld 36, For 42, Against 62, GD -20, Pts 31 Crystal Palace - Pld 36, For 37, Against 58, GD -21, Pts 31 West Bromwich Albion - Pld 36, For 33, Against 60, GD -27, Pts 30 Norwich - Pld 36, For 41, Against 71, GD -30, Pts 30

If you have that attitude you may as well just scrap the whole english premier league promotion/relegation system and have a set 20 teams in premier most likely depending on amount of money/fans etc they have. I see Wigan is likely to come up next year - bring it on! Well if Southamption is good enough they'll get promoted next year from 1st div if they get do get relegated.
Southampton have the second longest record in the division of not being relegated (after Liverpool, a massive club).

Are you sure? I thought Everton had never been relegated. Or is it Arsenal? Or both?
