Who likes the Butthole Surfers? Man, they are a lot of fun. They're freaky, weird, yeah... I'm at work, listening to the 24 hour radio stream, and it's pretty far out. Gibby Hanes has got a freaky laugh. You guys should check out this radiostation at:

www.buttholesurfers.com

Hey, does anybody here know how to tweak the LAN stettings on Firefox to make this action work on said browser? HELP ME!

Humpty Dumpty LSD is a pretty good mix of stuff. Plus, the CD Art is actually water color paintings done by Gibby Haynes himself! I love you Peggy. Oh, I love you Peggy...

I think it's cool that you're checking this stuff out. It seems like when I tell most people about cool stuff they totally blow me off. Do you guys know I'm talking about?

Here are some other cool bands, although they are a lot different then the Butthole Surfers.

Midnight Movies
Clinic
Portishead
The Requiem for a Dream Soundtrack
The Vapors...most people only know their single "turning japanese," but I got their first and only two albums, and they're pretty good. Something weird about the vapors: they never toured much because they didn't want to give the band an image.

Thanks for the heads-up. I already know Portishead but I will check the rest out. Never actually heard any Clinic stuff before for some reason.

Butthole Surfer musts

22 going on 23
Cherub
The Annoying Song

That's just a few, Cherub may be kind of hard to find...I don't know. I highly recommend the The Hole Truth...And Nothing Butt. It's a kick ass compilation of early live shit and a couple of demos. I feel lucky to have found this. It even came with a couple of stickers! Has anybody else heard this action?

Right on BLT. I think they hit their creative zenith with Locust Abortion Technician. 22 Going on 23 has some of the most beautiful melodic guitar/bass counterpoint work ever recorded, replete with backing neurotic phone call, and sheep. You really can't get much better than that, folks.

And hey - Pardon me, I'm only bleeding....

King Missile is another great (somewhat surreal) band in a similar vein of BS. They made a whole song about the violent things that they were going to do to Martin Scorcese.

Yeah, generally a great band, especially the two albums chicken mentioned.
Can't wait to go home and get 'em out.

glacial906 Posted - 04/10/2005 : 17:45:37
I thought that the older Butthole Surfer albums (like Pioughed) were a bit uncomprehensible but still bearable. I loved Independent Worm Saloon (especially their "ballad" type songs like the Wooden Song and the one about Cowboys and Indians...can't recall the name right now) and also liked Electriclarryland. The newer album (the newest one I'm aware of, Weird Revolution) has some good tracks too, but it sounds overall alot more polished than their older stuff, which isn't always a good thing. They even do a song co-written by Kid Rock. (The Shame of Life).

Anyway, overall a teriffic band.

There's also another band with Gibby (and Johnny Depp on bass) called "P"

I think the album is called "P" too.
Not all good, but there's four songs worth a listen: 'Michael Stipe', Dancing Queen (Abba cover), 'Die Anne' and The deal.

My favourite albums are Independant worm saloon (1993) and Electriclarryland (1996)
These two albums are the most coherent.

Elictriclarryland has a great mix of pop and punk.
Some of might have seen the video "Pepper" off this album on MTV.

I don't like all of their stuff, but they've recorded some great stuff.

The last album is a little disappointing though.

Thank you Apl.

Love Gibby Haynes and His Problem, they haven't toured the UK in a while, but I'm keeping a good lookout. Not seen the dvd either (bugger, there goes my credit card again).

A good friend of mine who has always idolized Gibby met him a while ago and was crushingly dissappointed - said Gibby was a total ass and the experience pretty much ruined The Butthole Surfers for him. I am slightly suspicious though - the good friend in question is sometimes guilty of behaving like a petulant child and an ass himself, especially when he's drunk.

If you have the opportunity to see them, Gibby Haynes and His Problem are great too.
I can't even connect to their site right now, so I can't reproduce your Firefox issue.

I've listened to them for many years, but only recently discovered that they make sense to me. They're a real comfort. When we saw Gibby and His Problem at Abbey Pub in Chicago, some guy jumped up on stage, in front of a crowd of about 40, and gave Gibby a huge hug. To me, it seemed that everyone there wanted to do the same.

Have you seen the live dvd "The Blind Eye Sees All" yet? It's good.

Nice sig btw.

When I saw them circa '87/'88, they had a naked dancer with aluminum foil over her teeth. She also kinda looked like she had Down's Syndrome (not that there's anything wrong with that...).
