Any excuse! This time round, I'm looking for just particular parts of songs (so not whole lyrics sheets), and you should also say why you're choosing that particular stanza. So: a couple of my choices.

"Lately in the hospitals, the halfway homes, the choking jails,
There's people on the mend again, with hope to carry on again,
It makes me feel that something's right, for everyone who tries to fight,
No politics or dirty tricks, more standing up and shouting out.

Come on people, keep your friends close, your enemies won't matter any more."
Hope Of The States - 'Enemies/Friends'

This struck me when I heard it for the first time, at some point last year. It's remarkably positive, at a time when the overwhelming majority of music concentrates on the negative side of things. Really, have a look through and its amazing. I particularly like 'keep your friends close, your enemies won't matter any more', its not an exhortation to fight or bemoaning your problems, its an optimistic and really impressive and heartfelt sentiment.

"And if a double-decker bus crashes into us, to die by your side, what a heavenly way to die. And if a ten-ton truck kills the both of us, to die by your side, the pleasure, the privilege is mine."
The Smiths - "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out"

This is one of the most perversely romantic expressions I've come across, and not nearly as arch or sarcastic as Le Moz can be. Interesting fact: in medieval times, to die was a euphemism for orgasm, which probably isn't of any relevance here but cements the connection between love and death that's explored elsewhere. As I said though, this is a beautiful and romantic thought, unusually expressed but very evocative.

I'm like a lost snail in the night.

Seeing as these 'Secrets' website have reaffirmed my faith in marriage, here are soem of Jack's lyrics that sum it up for so many.

Find yourself a girl and settle down
Live a simple life in a quiet town

Steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
Steady as she goes (steady as she goes)

So steady as she goes

Your friends have shown a kink in the single life
You've had too much to think, now you need a wife

Steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
So steady as she goes (steady as she goes)

Well here we go again
You've found yourself a friend that knows you well
But no matter what you do
You'll always feel as though you tripped and fell

So steady as she goes

When you have completed what you thought you had to do
And your blood's depleted to the point of stable glue

Then you'll get along
Then you'll get along

Steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
So steady as she goes (steady as she goes)

Well here we go again
You've found yourself a friend that knows you well
But no matter what you do
You'll always feel as though you tripped and fell

So steady as she goes
Steady as she goes

Settle for a girl (settle for a girl), neither up or down (neither up or down)
Sell it to the crowd (sell it to the crowd) that is gathered round (that is gathered round)

Settle for a girl (settle for a girl), neither up or down (neither up or down)
Sell it to the crowd (sell it to the crowd) that is gathered round (that is gathered round)

So steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
Steady as she goes (steady as she goes)

Steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
So steady as she goes (steady as she goes)

Steady as she goes, are you steady now?
Steady as she goes, are you steady now?

Steady as she goes, are you steady now?
Steady as she goes, are you steady now?

Steady as she goes

I'd walk her everyday, into a shady place

If I could hold on
to just one thought
For long enough to know
Why my mind is moving so fast
And the conversation is slow.
Burn off all the fog
And let the sun
through to the snow
Let me see your face again
Before I have to go.

I have seen you in the movies
And in those magazines at night
I saw you on the barstool when
You held that glass so tight.
And I saw you in my nightmares
But I'll see you in my dreams
And I might live a thousand years
Before I know what that means.

Once there was a friend of mine
Who died a thousand deaths
His life was filled with parasites
And countless idle threats.
He trusted in a woman
And on her he made his bets
Once there was a friend of mine
Who died a thousand deaths.

I got some heaven in my head

I came along when he broke your heart
That's when you needed someone to help forget about him,
I gave you love with a brand new start
That's what you needed the most to set your broken heart free,

I know you cried, and you felt blue,
But when I could I gave strength to you

I'm waiting for the day when you can love again

I kissed your lips when your face looked sad,
It made me think about him and that you still loved him so
But you know that pretty soon
I made you feel glad that you belonged to me
And love began to show

He hurt you then, but that's all done,
I guess I'm saying you're the only one
I'm waiting for the day when you can love again

He hurt you then, but that's all done,
I guess I'm saying you're the only one
I'm waiting for the day when you can love again

You didn't think that I could sit around and watch him work
You didn't think that I could sit around and let watch him take you
You didn't think that I could sit around and let him go.
You didn't think that I could sit back and let you go

I will show you fear in a handful of dust

Un soir que j'étais dans le Bronx
J'étais on ne peut plus anx
leux de retrouver Samantha
Entre Thelonius Monk
Quelques punks aussi Brons
Ki beat giclant de mon Aiwa

You're under arrest
Cause you are the best

J'ai dit et je redis donc s'
Ur le trop tard du Bronx
Je recherchais Samantha
S'pointent deux gorilles du Bronx
Il est évident donc c'
Etait mal barré pour moi

You're under arrest
Cause you are the best

C'était deux police blacks
Qui pratiquaient le slang
Ainsi que le colt cobra
Ils m'plaquent au mur du Bronx
Et je défie quiconque
De ne pas avoir les foies

You're under arrest
Cause you are the best

You're under arrest
Cause you are the best

L'un des ces yankees monk
Ey me dit "give us your money"
Qu'est-ce que t'aurais fait toi
Ils m'relachent ainsi donc
J'enfonce dans le Bronx
Retrouver Samantha
You're under arrest
Cause you are the best
You're under arrest
Cause you are the best

I will show you fear in a handful of dust

Well I hope that I don’t fall in love with you
’cause falling in love just makes me blue,
Well the music plays and you display
Your heart for me to see,
I had a beer and now I hear you
Calling out for me
And I hope that I don’t fall in love with you.

Well the room is crowded, people everywhere
And I wonder, should I offer you a chair?
Well if you sit down with this old clown,
Take that frown and break it,
Before the evening’s gone away,
I think that we could make it,
And I hope that I don’t fall in love with you.

Well the night does funny things inside a man
These old tom-cat feelings you don’t understand,
Well I turn around to look at you,
You light a cigarette,
I wish I had the guts to bum one,
But we’ve never met,
And I hope that I don’t fall in love with you.

I can see that you are lonesome just like me,
And it being late, you’d like some some company,
Well I turn around to look at you,
And you look back at me,
The guy you’re with has up and split,
The chair next to you’s free,
And I hope that you don’t fall in love with me.

Now it’s closing time, the music’s fading out
Last call for drinks, I’ll have another stout.
Well I turn around to look at you,
You’re nowhere to be found,
I search the place for your lost face,
Guess I’ll have another round
And I think that I just fell in love with you

I envy the wind
That whispers in your ear
That howls through the winter
That freezes your fingers
That moves through your hair
And cracks your lips
And chills you to the bone
I envy the wind

I envy the rain
That falls on your face
That wets your eyelashes
And dampens your skin
And touches your tongue
And soaks through your shirt
And drips down your back
I envy the rain

I envy the sun
That brightens your summer
That warms your body
And holds you in her heat
And makes your days longer
And makes you hot
And makes you sweat
I envy the sun

I envy the wind, I envy the rain, I envy the sun, I envy the wind

I got some heaven in my head

I have seen you shake
And I know what it cost you
I have heard your words
And I am big on your noise
My eyes aren't big enough
Because I can't see your hands
I can't see what you hold
I am growing now
As I watch you fade
Now I know what you know
And I'll break the chains that you have made, these chains you've made for me
I will pull you down
I know I'll fail in style
I long to touch your genius hands

When we walked through Little Italy I saw my reflection come right off your face
I paint pictures to remember, you're too beautiful to put into words

kathryn Posted - 10/25/2005 : 04:37:27

Threw my bad fortune off the top of a tall building
But I'd rather have done it with you
Your boy's smile, 5 in the morning, looked into your eyes and I was really in love
In Chinatown hungover you showed me just what I could do
Talking about time travel and the meaning and just what it was worth

And I feel like some bird of paradise
My bad fortune slipping away
And I feel the innocence of a child
Everybody's got something good to say

Things I once thought unbelievable in my life have all taken place
When we walked through Little Italy I saw my reflection come right off your face
I paint pictures to remember
You're too beautiful to put into words
Like a gypsy you dance in circles all around me and all over the world

So I take my good fortune and I fantasize of our leaving like some modern-day gypsy landslide,
Like some modern-day Bonnie and Clyde on the run again

Swimming in the heavy water, buried in the sand
Happy hearts fall from my shaking hands

This is a song about susan
This is a song about the girl next door
This is a song about the everyday occurrences
That make me feel like letting go
Yes I think we’ve got a problem
So much for the afterglow
So much for the afterglow

This is a song about susan
Yeah, this is a song about the way things are
This is a song about the scary things
You see from the corner of your eyes
Don’t you wonder why?

We never talk about the future, yeah
We never talk about the past anymore
We never ask ourselves the questions
To the answers that nobody even wants to know
I guess the honeymoon is over
So much for the afterglow, so much for the afterglow
So much for the afterglow, so much for the afterglow

I remember we could talk about anything
I remember when we used to want to hang out
I remember we could talk about everything
I remember when we used to want to hang out
I remember, I remember, I remember

This love is a cancer in me, I can feel it advancing in me
This fire it is my light in the world

So messed up
I want you here
In my room
I want you here
Now we're gonna be
Face-to-face
And I'll lay right down
In my favorite place

And now I wanna
Be your dog
Now I wanna
Be your dog
Now I wanna
Be your dog
Well c'mon

Now I'm ready
To close my eyes
And now I'm ready
To close my mind
And now I'm ready
To feel your hand
And lose my heart
On the burning sands

And now I wanna
Be your dog
And now I wanna
Be your dog
Now I wanna
Be your dog
Well c'mon

Hey, when her misery is conqured -how sweet
I'll stay looking, I'll seek
Above and under
Pass up the night
The love and the devil
The fight

Follow her into its world
Up to the heart of its town
Away from the night of the golden underground

On it where you press your cheek
The original floor where to sleep
Or just above and under your feet

It's what I can't give you
What I can't see

The last of the daydreamers have walked out the open door
avoiding any problems they might've had with the social law
and I remember Tuesday and every last day of my life
and I'll never forget anything that stays with me at night

it's the last chance for pretenders to go and get things done
it's the last chance for daydreamers to live what they dream of

a child is walking slowly his head bent to the ground
watching each step taken and his shoes a dirty brown
now he don't want a companion, got things to say but don't wanna talk
and I remember myself like him oh I hope he don't also fall

it's the last chance for pretenders to go and get things done
it's the last chance for daydreamers to live what they dream of

now go and get your army boots my son
now go and get your music box come on
go and get your building blocks my son
it's time to set your sails my boy and run.

As I walked down by the river side
One evening in the spring
Heard a long gone sound from days gone by
Blowin' in on the great north wind
Though there is no lonesome corncrake's cry
Of sorrow and delight
You can hear the cars and the shouts from bars
And the laughter and the fights

May the ghosts that howled around the house at night
Never keep you from your sleep
May they all sleep tight down in hell tonight
Or wherever they may be

As I walked on with a heavy heart
And a stone danced on the tide
And the song went on though the lights were gone
And the north wind gently sighed
And an evening breeze coming from the east
That kissed the river side
So I pray now child that you sleep tonight
When you hear this lullaby

May a wind that blows from haunted graves
Never bring you misery
May the angels bright watch you tonight
And keep you while you sleep

I was born in a pool, they made my mother stand
And I spat on that surgeon and his trembling hand
When I felt the light I was worse than bored
I stole the doctor's scalpel and I slit the cord
I was a Catholic boy
Redeemed through pain
Not through joy
I was two months early they put me under glass
I screamed and cursed their children when the nurses passed
Was convicted of theft
When I slipped from the womb
They led me straight from my mother to a cell in the Tombs
They starved me for weeks, they thought they'd teach me fear
I fed on cellmates' dreams, it gave me fine ideas
When they cut me loose the time had served me well
I made allies in heaven, I made comrades in Hell
I was a Catholic child
The blood ran red
The blood ran wild
I make angels dance and drop to their knees
When I enter a church the feet of statues bleed
I understand the fate of all my enemies
Just like Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane
I watched the sweetest psalm stolen by the choir
I dreamed of martyrs' bones hanging from a wire
I make a contribution, I get absolution
I make a resolution to purify my soul
They can't touch me now
I got every sacrament behind me:
I got baptism,
I got communion,
I got penance,
I got extreme unction
I've got confirmation
'Cause I'm a Catholic child
The blood ran red
The blood ran wild
Now I'm a Catholic man
I put my tongue to the rail whenever I can.

Are my ribbons tied? Is my hair in place?
Have I got a cute expression on my face?
Are my shoes all shined?
I try to keep in line when I'm dancing in the show tonight

Does my shuffle step really look so good?
Am I doing it the way you think I should?
Would it be amiss if I blew a kiss
When I'm dancing in the show tonight?

Showtime now is getting nearer and I'm getting scared
Wish I could see in the mirror if I'm all prepared

First you take a step then you point your toe
Hope I know it like I did a week ago
Am I standing straight?
I can hardly wait till I'm dancing in the show tonight

Showtime now is getting nearer and I'm getting scared
Wish I could see in the mirror if I'm all prepared

First you take a step then you point your toe
Hope I know it like I did a week ago

Floating upon the surface for

Well fucking well come and find me

And nothing
Nothing
Nothing
Nothing

You want me
Well, come on and break the door down

I actually think there's no song that has described human behaviour like "Sweet Dreams". Simple, but clever.

Love is a stranger
In an open car
To tempt you in
And drive you far away

And I want you
And I want you
And I want you so
It’s an obsession

Love is a danger
Of a different kind
To take you away
And leave you far behind
And love love love
Is a dangerous drug
You have to receive it
And you still can’t
Get enough of the stuff

It’s savage and it’s cruel
And it shines like destruction
Comes in like the flood
And it seems like religion
It’s noble and it’s brutal
It distorts and deranges
And it wrenches you up
And you’re left like a zombie

And I want you
And I want you
And I want you so
It’s an obsession

It’s guilt edged
Glamorous and sleek by design
You know it’s jealous by nature
False and unkind
It’s hard and restrained
And it’s totally cool
It touches and it teases
As you stumble in the debris

And I want you
And I want you
And I want you so
It’s an obsession

Stone Roses: a selection

Sometimes I fantasise
When the streets are cold and lonely
And the cars they burn below me
Don’t these times fill your eyes

Her hair
Soft drifted snow
Death white
I’d like to know
Why she hates
All that she does
But she gives
It all that she’s got

Until the sky turns green
The grass is several shades of blue
Every member of parliament trips on glue

T takes all these things and all that time
Till my sugar spun sister’s happy
With this love of mine
It’ll take all these things and oh much more

I’ve paid
For fifteen or more
But my guts
Can’t take many more

My hands are stuck
To my jeans
And she knows she knows
What this must mean

She wakes up with the sun
She asked me what is all the fuss
As she gave me more than she thought she should
She wakes up with the sun
I think what have I done
As I gave her more than I thought I would

At takes all these things and all that time
Till my sugar spun sister’s happy
With this love of mine

The candy floss girl
The sticky fingered boy
Oh that sister of mine

Chimes sing sunday morn
Today’s the day she’s sworn
To steal what she never could own
And race from this hole she calls home

Now you’re at the wheel
Tell me how, how does it feel?
So good to have equalised
To lift up the lids of your eyes

As the mile they disappear
See land begin to clear
Free from the filth and the scum
This american satelites won

She’ll carry on through it all
She’s a waterfall

See the steeple pine
The hills as old as time
Soon to be put to the test
To be whipped by the winds of the west

Stands on shifting sands
The scales held in her hands
The wind it just whips her away
And fills up her brigantine sails

She’ll carry on through it all
She’s a waterfall

I've got bad intentions
I intend to
Knock you down
These stones I throw
Oh these French kisses
Are the only way I've found

How's that for a slice of fried gold?

This is a song with no words.
But no one can hear the missing.
They just look at my mouth
And look at my mouth
And say hey man, I know where you're coming from.
Furniture has no say in life,
It was made to be used by people.
How many times have you felt like a bookcase
Sitting in living room gathering dust
Full of thought already written
How bout now?
This is a song with no words.
But no one can hear the missing.
You can see my mouth and see that it's moving
I think you alreay know where I'm coming from
Right here.

Be a motorcycle
Be a getaway car
Be a house of sparrows
I am waiting
This is where you are

Thinking about the lines
That cross the sky
Mine for you and I
Never have to die

I have plans engaging
All of these points connecting one
My trap is simple
I will forgive you
For all you've never done

Lessons of the crime
Of sick and tried
In a forest crucified
You're gonna never have to die
