preparing for the death of the pope.

as much as is wrong with the catholic church it's sort of moving to see the amount of respect that is being given, I have a soft spot for old John Paul

being a lapsed catholic and all

By everyone who has the power to stop it? Inside and outside of the church?

I must say, this is an interesting topic.

I assume that I'm being counted as one of that billion (billion, wrong word) catholics and it's making me angry.

Mike, what I was getting at was the sheer scale and ritualised nature of the abuse probably indicates it´s at best just being deliberately ignored but feels to me more like being actively fostered. I´m not saying every member is involved, just enough to keep the rest in line are so eh, try the top.

That bit (in bold) was kind of my point.

Oh and I'd be right there with you, blasting them for their
(add your own adjective) politicies and attitudes
about contraception, AIDS, etc.

Hmmm, I'd like to see proof personally. I have known or known of someone who has committed pretty much every crime possible in my 28 years. I have never known of anyone who is/was a pfile. I still think they are probably a little more close-knit than thieves for example, and perhaps not so easy to out in a fingersnap.

I am just cautious when it comes to conspiracy theories, and therefore before I condemn the entire Catholic church for child sex abuse, I would like a little proof. Well actually a lot of it, and resounding proof at that. I have no doubt that there are cases of it, but it seems like the attitude here is that they are pretty much all at it. It's a pretty serious allegation. I have plenty of other things I could accuse the church of in the meantime, such as their policies on contraception and it's subsequent effect on the world aids problem.

kathryn Posted - 04/04/2005 : 11:53:16
The biggest myth surrounding child sexual abuse is that
it is perpetrated by, as you say, "the most shadowy of
criminals." I can't speak for other countries, but in the States
it's not a case of the police not being interested but the
statutes of limitations running out. If I may add to Newo's
post, it would not be at all difficult for the Church to at least stop
reassigning repeat offenders. For decades now, their "solution" is to
send predator priests to new unsuspecting, trusting parishes and
victims. I'd settle for that.

Homers_pet_monkey Posted - 04/04/2005 : 05:57:51
How would they do it in a fingersnap? Get them all to fill out a questionnaire? Seriously, aren't these sort of people the most shadowy of criminals? Do you really think they could detect them all, even if they wanted to? I am not sure it would be that easy. Why are the police not interested?

May the next Pope do more to promote World Peace & Understanding as well as continue to getting child predators out of the clergy. (And hopfully letting women becoming Priests as well).

My brother studied at a university in the west of Ireland that was formerly a Churchrun industrial school for orphans, and while he was there they discovered the school graveyard (which I visited, in a creepily wellhidden part of the woods) had something like ninety more children than was previously supposed (by laypersons, at any rate). Daise, if they wanted child predators out of the Church they´d do it in a fingersnap. Don´t you feel it odd that as an organisation they´re no slouch at centuries of sending missionaries out worldwide to spread their message but when it comes to a bit of housecleaning suddenly that becomes too tall an order?

The fact that his death is this week's (month?) major event in the world is one of the many clues that tells us there's something wrong on this planet...
Daisy Girl Posted - 04/02/2005 : 15:58:21
I am sorry to hear about the passing of the Pope. When I was 5 I prayed that he would have a long healthy life. Because the two popes before him died very quickly-- one due to illness and one due to assination.

Pope John Paul II did a lot to help world Peace. He lived a long life and did a lot of good. He led a dignified life and had a dignified death. May the next Pope do more to promote World Peace & Understanding as well as continue to getting child predators out of the clergy. (And hopfully letting women becoming Priests as well).

So, who's going to be the new pope?

I nominate Frank, since he's spent a lot of time around Catholics.

Looks like JP's kicked his bucket, bought his farm etc., etc.
I disagree with most of what he stood for, but no-one likes to see people die. I feel sorry for him, really, having his path to death monitored constantly like that.

So the Vatican Bank is going to get a new acting CEO soon? First I heard of it. Must be high atop that mountain of Nazi gold.

i suspect i'm the only "practicing" catholic out of the lot, so i'm going to keep my opinions/feelings to myself as to not engage in a morality/faith discussion, because as a theologian i get into enough of those as it is. so why am i even posting in here? no idea. ignore me

I'm with domestiques. The new house of the pope can't be hot enough, as far as I'm concerned.

Tre, I got your Catholics right here, babe, these Catholics,
the ones whose organization isn't a front for child-abuse
and denial of the human spirit.
