Please, oh please, don't add "[insert word for penis] huhuhuh" like I know you want to. It's not clever or funny.

Anyways: Anyone here like Big Black?

I submit that they're the most intense band with a drum machine - period. A couple of the songs I recommend are Steelworker, Texas, Fists of Love, Kerosene, and Bad Penny. I like all of their stuff..but those are good starting points, I think. They're not everyone's thing, though..very harsh production and brutal guitars, not to mention "controversial" lyrics. Mmm...

Just give them tiny clothes, and they'll never come back.

Bahaha, I can't wait to see the results - they should be interesting if the music effected anything.

So can it pretty much be said that Albini does not make bad music? No matter what medium it takes?

My ex made me a Rapeman tape (two nuns and a packmule? is that it, I forget) that got lost to the ether many years ago sadly, there's another thing I ought to look for on slsk, I remember enjoying that too.

I've got most of if not all of the Shellac stuff - most of it is right up there with Big Black. I think that Rapeman is the band that's incredibly under-rated. I don't hear anyone talking of them..ever.

Let me check 'er out.

I've got Prayer To God, and I think that is all of my Shellace. I've got one or two Rapeman songs. All courtesy of Nate.

I don't think Shellac is generally as rated as big black, I have 1000 hurts and I for one love it as much as the big black I have, what songs do you have Sir Rock?

I've only been listening to Big Black now for a few weeks. I'd be interested to hear some more Shellac and Rapeman, besides the one or two songs I've recieved, maybe as just a musical "evolution" of Albini. Right now I'm still trying to get my head around The Hammer Party, which is becoming more and more of a winning battle.

Yes Crouton, those are my pics...I have the negatives to prove it, ha ha...

What a day that was. We drove from LA to SF on Sunday night, slept about 5 hours, saw the sound check, interviewed Steve and Santiago, saw The Wipers and Big Black, then hopped in the car at 2am and somehow got back home to LA without anyone falling asleep at the wheel. It was 107 degrees in LA. I was a zombie for days.

Oh wow, really? Hrmm..I might have to pick up one of those. With a solid-state amp with the distortion on and a Boss DS-1 pedal I can get something somewhat similar..but I bet the Blues Driver adds more of the Albini-goodness.

But Steve Albini IS Italian.

Any guitar players here ever try a BOSS Blues-Driver distortion pedal? You can actually achieve a tone not unsimilar to that of Steve Albini's guitar tone in Big Black.

Those are your pictures? Awesome. There's some praise of them here: http://www.electrical.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4779&start=45

First post on that page. Mr. Albini actually posts on that forum as "Steve" - he writes some hilarious stuff there. In the thread that's linked he goes on and on about the wonder of the Peavey..all in fake Italian, bahaha!

One of my abiding memories of university is giving a talk on the production methods of Steve Albini, so the first musical example I gave was to blast the class with Kerosene really loud.

It was ace.

Yeah great band. I loved them even (or maybe I should say: especially) before I heard a single note of them. Then I got lucky to find original vinyl copies of the "atomizer" and "songs about..." albums, which I still treasure alot, but I got to admit I don't play them that often. The latter is the better one imo. I adore their version of The Model. They also have great liner notes: "We would like to thank absolutely nobody. Thank you." :)

Hehe, I didn't think about the bandwidth. It's hosted on my ISP's ftp now, so it's all good.

They were incredibly ahead of their time, weren't they? I love those guitar tones, like you mentioned. I just recently got a hold of the Pig Pile video (thankyou SpudBoy!) and it is really, really great - inbetween the songs it shows the band lighting off fireworks and themselves every once and a while..hilarious! Great performances, though..especially of Passing Complexion.

Great pics, though I dunno how the webmaster will feel about his bandwidth being usurped by mysterious forces. :P
My favorite releases by BB are Songs About F***ing and the Lungs/Racer-X EPs. I remember thinking when I was first exposed to Big Black (via the Hammer Party compilation) that I had never heard anything like them; those guitar tones are so otherworldly and abrasive as hell. Actually, listening to the early stuff always conjures an image of driving really late at night across some desolate inner-city bridge.
