Without a doubt in my mind the greatest musician of all time. Nobody even approaches the composing talent this guy had. He manages to put, much like Shakespeare did in his writing, ALL of the complexities, emotions, thoughts, etc. of human life into his music and does it immaculately at that. It's truly only once in a billion (or more!) years that a man of this genius comes along, and I for one am grateful to have his music to listen to in my lifetime.
I'm sitting here at the moment listening to the andante movement of the Fourth Brandenburg and absolutely can not get over the beauty and perfection of it.

I prefer Bach to play rather than to listen to, to be honest. Goldberg Variations - full-on soporific, I'm afraid.
However, I can appreciate the man's talent, and I fully agree with Nathan about being the greatest musician that's ever lived. The man was phenomenal, you know he wrote an entire half-hour cantata virtually every week he was principal organist at Leipzig cathedral? That's alongside reinventing intonation and musical structure into the system we use today and writing some of the most technically amazing pieces of music ever written. And thats also alongside having about a million kids.
The guy had skills to pay the bills, I'm telling you.

I love Bach. I wrote an essay on him for my english gcse. Man, youve mad me rally want to hear some now.

i went to a church once in the dead of winter...it was still dark outside (or just maybe REALLY cloudy) and the organist was playing Bach. there were 6 of us there and it made for one beautiful experience (kind of an eerie-tingly-uplifting-sweeping emotion--know what i mean?) |

Haha Vovat!! :) I didn't even know there was a Sebastian Bach in Skid Row. LOL.
Man, I was thinking about this thread today and really wished I had some Bach on hand where I was to listen to. That stuff is good to chill out to! |

Have to agree...when I was building my classical collection, I quickly became frustrated with box sets...the majority of them promised the "whole thing" but the sound was crap or something...I ended up just getting the pieces I dug the most... |

if you were looking for one big box set, i'm afraid you'd have to sacrifice quality for quantity. it's probably better to poke around and buy the best performances piece by piece than grab one package of 'pretty good' renditions.

Dayanara, since you seem to be quite a connoisseur, can you recommend any good boxed sets of Bach's work, "good" meaning comprehensive as well as the performances being up to par? Right now all I've got is a couple of LP's and a computer full of mp3's and would like to get some kind of comprehensive set on CD's or LP's.

nothing compares to hearing bach (any bach) played on a huge pipe organ in an old gothic church. goosebump city.
glad to hear that you guys like the brandenburg's. the third is my favorite, probably because i've played it at least once a year since i was 10. if you haven't already, you have to check out the unaccompanied cello suites. rostropovich gave a really amazing live performance that's out on a box set. the partitas and sonatas for solo violin are worth getting, too.

Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F.
first track on the golden records launched on the Voyager spacecraft that have departed the solar system. so...if some civilization captures the traveller and decides to listen to our playlist, as it were, Bach is the first thing they'd hear. i think that's damn cool.
