My team, The Vanderbilt Commodores, didn't make it to the Big Dance (NCAA tournament), however, we are in the NIT and we travel to Bloomington, Indiana to take on DaisyGirl's team, The Hoosiers of Indiana University (Wish us plenty of luck, we're going to need it!)
Also, for your enjoyment and/or aggravation, I've copied below a website address for Dick Vitale, Mr. College Basketball!!!!!

Posted - 04/05/2005 : 08:34:52 We're probably thinking of the same shot, but I'm also talking about Illinois style of play in general. I love to watch the great passing but it just bugs me that there's no inside game. I know Augustine was in foul trouble but their team is built around the 3 point game, isn't it? Even if you can't go into the low post, at least drive the basket every few times down the floor-- especially on a fast break for crying out loud! |
darwin |
Posted - 04/04/2005 : 22:50:20 At least they missed that 3 point attempt (if were thinking of the same one). |

Posted - 04/04/2005 : 21:51:37 There's nothing I hate more in basketball than a team ending a fast break with a 3-point attempt. I really wish the NCAA would move that fucking line out a couple feet.
I'm glad Illinois lost. |

Posted - 04/04/2005 : 21:46:47 I'm an ACC man, but there was no joy to be had by this fan as the dreaded 'heels won it. Oh well, the one team I wanted to lose out of all 65. Still, very good tournament. I feel bad for the Illini fans and team. Bittersweet year to not win it all.

Posted - 04/04/2005 : 20:16:32 Hey, just in case you're not watching the NCAA Championship game, it's a good 'un. The Fightin' Illini down by 13 in the 2nd half, now with 3.50 to go, the Tar Heels cling to a 3 point lead....

Yeah, that Louisville vs West VA, and the Illinois vs AZ games were crazy, both going to overtime.
Go Big Blue!!! |

Posted - 03/27/2005 : 05:52:26 By the way, after being tied for second place in my brackets at work after first weekend, I literally have not one left NOT ONE TEAM!! Jeeeez! So much for my upsets, etc.

Posted - 03/27/2005 : 05:44:28 Thanks man...yeah I was pretty disappointed Friday. I definitely will be pulling for KY if they play Carolina. How about those 2 games on Saturday. Didn't get to see all of them, but what comebacks! An all Kentucky final would truly be amazing. Kind of like a basketball civil war!

Posted - 03/26/2005 : 20:57:40 Another great day of College Basketball!!! Louisville and Illinois both win in overtime.
My Commodores lost Wednesday night to Memphis in the NIT, but, we played the best we could that night, and Memphis was the better team, that night. We had a good year and should have a better one next year.
Sorry about Duke, Superabounder, I was looking forward to the rematch of KY and Duke on Sunday. So, who you with now? Big Blue? Good!!! Big Blue over carolina blue anyday, huh!
I am now down to Illinois, Louisville, UNC and KY. Of course, I have KY beating Illinois in the championship. But, wouldn't it be great if we had a Louisville vs. Kentucky championship game, can you imagine, Pitino vs Tubby, Kentucky fans vs Louisville fans!
Go Big Blue!!! |

Posted - 03/22/2005 : 19:02:05 Man, that must have been some Vandy game. Yeah, I'd like another UK/Duke matchup. I'm now hoping that anyone will please beat UNC to prevent them from winning a championship and holding it over all the Duke fans(man I'm lame!). Villanova's best player tore his ACL on Sunday, so they will have less firepower, but I'm still holding out hope. UK better be ready for Utah-they looked tough against Oklahoma. Friday night baby!! Can't wait!

Posted - 03/22/2005 : 15:11:53 Wow!!! What a frigin' Game. My mighty Commodores almost let it get away from them, but with 0.7 seconds remaining (that's right, 7/10's of a second) Senior Jason Holwerda threw the inbounds pass the length of the court to a wide-open Corey Smith(Corey had set a screen for Moe, a/k/a Super Mario Moore, and while both defenders covered Moe (9 three-pointers, 31 pts for the game) Corey Smith was left unguarded, under Vandy's basket, and made the easy layup as time expired. An exciting example of two Seniors getting the job done, and a litte bit of the ol' Memorial Magic.
There is one rather large speed bump on our road to Madison Square Garden, John Calipari's Memphis Tigers. We travel to Memphis Wednesday for a 9:00 p.m. tipoff. Coach Calipari may be a very good coach, the Tigers may be a very good team, and they may have Elvis on their side, but we've got Moe and 10 other kids that don't know how to give up and quit, even when there is only 0.7 seconds left in the game.
[Thanks for the expression of support for the Commodores, Superabounder. I'm a little distracted with Vandy right now, but after Wednesday I'll have a few days to exchange some serious Smack-Trash Talkin' with ya!!!, you know, the BIG BLUE vs. little blue devils game coming up, that is if coach kay can make it to the Elite Eight] |

Posted - 03/21/2005 : 22:27:37 My bracket is poor but I'm winning my office pool at the moment. In the Final 4 I have Illinois, UNC, Syracuse (oh well), and Louisville (with Illinois beating UNC). For the elite 8 I've lost Gonzaga, UConn, and Syracuse. |

Go Commodores (sorry Daisy Girl!)

Posted - 03/21/2005 : 17:01:28 My bracket doesn't matter now that I had the joy of seeing UVM get its ass whupped last night. I was a mere mile from the campus. You shoudda seen all the downtown bars empty after the game. Payback = a bitch.
Best of luck at MSG!
I still believe in the excellent joy of the Catholics |

Posted - 03/21/2005 : 16:52:39 Congrats Kathryn!
How is everyone's bracket now that the dust has settled a little? I've still got the following teams still alive in the Sweet 16: Illionois, OK State, Washington, Louisville, Texas Tech, UNC, Duke, and Kentucky.
Hey, check out ESPN tonight, 8 p.m. CST, My mighty Commodores host the Shockers of Witchita State in the NIT. I'm on my way down to Memorial Gym right now, where we have a 23 game win streak against NonConference opponents (most of which are cupcakes that are scheduled in the beginning of the season, but still, it's a win streak and we're still playing in the postseason).
Wish us Luck tonight and on the road to Madison Square Garden!!!

How 'bout Univ of Wisconsin at Milwaukee!!!!!Rolling over BC, you gotta love it! One of the players was crying tears of Joy as the game finished. |

Posted - 03/19/2005 : 16:10:46 Yeah Kathyryn, the Vermont pick was my moment of fleeting glory before Kansas blew my bracket. My scientific approach (use the RPI ratings) worked (for that one game).
Well Old Man, I hope that you are wrong about Sunday for the Blue Devils. A rematch with Kentucky would be pretty sweet. Maybe it would go along the lines of the '92 game(hehe!). I don't think Duke has enough legs to do much this year, although my heart made me pick them into the Final Four where they were to lose to Kansas (who my heart picked to beat the hated Tar Heels).

Posted - 03/19/2005 : 13:36:58 No, I'm not missing it at all, I'm back home in Nashville now, and we do have the Predators and they did make the playoffs last year for the first time in their young lives, but, with me, if Hockey is outta sight - then it's outta mind. |

Posted - 03/19/2005 : 10:12:46 Superabounder, you picked Groovy UV to beat the Cuse? You must live in Vermont. I thought everybody here was delusional but they turned out to be right. What a bummer for Syracuse. It sucks when the team that eliminates you gets creamed, which is what's gonna happy to those UVM boys Sunday. Seems a little easier when you at least lose to the team who cleans up the whole thing. But, yeah, there's a definite (and fleeting) feeling of glee this morning. Huge newspaper headlines, big smiles on everybody's face.
OldMan, I've posted too many times about the NHL, so I'll spare everybody and make it brief. (In my house, every night is Hockey Night In Canada.) In a nutshell, the owners blew it. So are you missing your NHL as much as I am? Where do you live now?

Posted - 03/19/2005 : 09:40:57 Hi DaisyGirl, I think you may have misunderstood my post concerning KY beating Duke, and I apologize if it was confusing. I was projecting the future and "extending my sympathies in advance", just some wishful thinking, and a little "Trash Talkin" to Superabound, especially the part about Mississippi State beating Duke this coming Sunday, before Kentucky gets the chance next weekend.
Go SEC!!!! |
Daisy Girl |
Posted - 03/19/2005 : 09:34:14 Wow you are right Old Man in a Coffee can! What an upset the whole Vermont/Syr thing was! I also never thought I would say this but thank you Kentucky (a big IU rival) for beating Duke (a bigger IU rival).
Yeah, about Knight I was a fan up until six months or so before he left. Truly, I am happy we got rid of him. The man has some serious anger management issues...yeah I hope Tennesee dosen't get him. He's not worth the trouble. |
OldManInaCoffeeCan |
Posted - 03/19/2005 : 08:52:47 I'm impressed Superabounder, having Vermont over Syracuse in your bracket, nice call!
I had Kansas losing in the Elite Eight to the Tar Heels, their loss to Bucknell is not quite the Bracket buster for me, but it sure didn't help. But hey, I rather see a Cinderella advance even if it hurst my bracket. Like you said, you got to be happy for Bucknell.
Oh, and, I want to extend my sympathies in advance to you and all the other Blue Devil fans, for Kentucky sending Duke back home to Tobacco Road early and empty handed. And, hey, who knows, Mississippi State may do it this Sunday before Kentucky gets the chance! |
Superabounder |
Posted - 03/19/2005 : 08:33:24 Man, I was all proud of my brackets after picking Vermont to beat Syracuse, and doing reasonably well in my first round, then Kansas, my pick to go to final game and lose, gets beat in the first round. Ugggggggg. Well, got to be happy for Bucknell. Two great games last night! Oh, and go Blue Devils! <waits for the rotten fruit to be tossed at him>

Posted - 03/19/2005 : 08:30:47 Hey, did anyone else see Chapter One of Bucknell's Cinderella Story. Can you believe it!
Here is a quote from the University's web page: "Chris McNaughton's jump-hook with 10.5 seconds remaining lifted 14th-seeded Bucknell to the biggest victory in its 110-year history, a 64-63 thriller over third-seeded Kansas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday - the first-ever Bison and Patriot League NCAA win."
Now, that's March Madness at it's best!!!!!

Posted - 03/19/2005 : 08:27:11 Oh yeah, DaisyGirl, my Commodores definitely have game. We have some good freshman (#20 recruiting class last year), and a good mix of experienced players, but we have been missing a "Go to Guy" all year, however, on our good nights, and you guys caught us on a good night, we manage to shoot the ball well, get plenty of "backdoor cuts" and play some pretty good defense.
Hey, there's talk that Tennessee may be interested in the General, Robert Montgomery Knight. Tenneessee fired Buzz Peterson (4th season) and is looking for a coach. However, I'm sure lots of other teams will make some overtures his way, notwithstanding the inexcusable lack of control of his temper and the resulting harm that it inevitably causes. Would you take him back? I'm glad we have Coach Kevin Stallings. |
OldManInaCoffeeCan |
Posted - 03/19/2005 : 08:17:52 Yo, Kath-ryn, that must have been pretty special being around all of those UVM fans when their David slayed Goliath. I guess they'll have bragging rights for sometime to come, "UVM put Syracuse out of the NCAA tournament", maybe even some t-shirts printed?
[off-topic] So, you live in Vermont now? Quite a change from Brooklyn, huh? A fan of collegiate hockey, what about the NHL? So what do you think, are the owners and players association, are they going to get it together and be ready to play next season. I realize the Salary Cap is a very important issue, but there are a lot of people south of the Mason Dixon Line, and perhaps throughout the country, that won't wait forever for this thing to be worked out. Concerning the NHL's popularity and TV ratings, they were already skating on thin ice before the cancellation. |

You know, I'm sure we didn't play the best Indiana team Wednesday night, not the team that won 10 "Big 10" regular season games, and I believe was undefeated at home in the conference(?). I'm sure you guys were more than just a little bit disappointed and frustrated that you were not in the NCAA tournament. So, what do you think, is Coach Davis coming back next year?
Aww... :) Well this team was really weak overall this year.... probably the weakest one since I've been alive. I was detached since the season stated off weakly, so ah well... ya win some ya loose some :)
I gotta say I was having more fun watching Vandy.... they got game... and spirt (let's hear it) lol.
Yeah, Coach Davis, who I ran into at the airport on the way to our honeymoon, seems like a super cool person and a real nice guy. It's too bad that other than going to the NCAA championship game the season Bob Knight left in 2001-2002, he hasn't achieved to the levels that was expected of him. If what I hear in terms of the rumor mill, he's on his way out.... so who knows?
