Posted - 03/08/2005 : 15:07:18 I was just chatting to my flatmate while the news was on and he commented that he's lost faith completely in Tony Blair, and feels let down. Despite my apolitical tendencies, this is a reasonable viewpoint. He then goes on to tell me that, at the forthcoming election, he's most likely to vote BNP.
Sound of jaw dropping this end. For those outside the UK, the British National Party is the friendly face of racism and neo-Nazism in the UK. That isn't even a particularly partisan description of them, there's pretty much no doubt that the majority of their policies are geared towards reversing the trend of multiculturalism (politely put), and basically making Britain for the (indigenous) British. They have no real power, just one or two local council seats in some very deprived and racially polarised areas, but they're growing: I guess they're representing similar values as Le Pen or Jorg Haider in France and Austria.
To his credit, he said that he wouldn't vote for them if they had any chance of winning, it would be more of a protest vote, but after discussing the subject it turns out that he goes along with the large majority of their policies. I quote "I think multiculturalism is evil".
This is very difficult for me. As I said, I'm not really involved in any sort of politics, but it baffles me that people are even capable of considering voting for extreme Right-wing factions such as the BNP. However, I realise also that its a valid political opinion, albeit one that I can't agree with at all.
Anyone else have experience of this sort of thing? I'm not really concerned with centre-right versus centre-left, Lab/Con, GDP/Dem party politics, but anyone else familiar with the sort of attitudes that would lead to someone voting this way?

Ach, you know what I mean. Thats the kind of terminology the BNP would use actually, hence the inverted commas. "Britain For The British", that kind of thing.

I have a friend who lives near Madrid and because of the subway terror attacks, she voted for the socialist party as alot of people did. It is something she says she regrets doing. She feels sickened how the socialist took advantage of this tragedy and she feels that she gave in to terrorist demands as well and now feels that the blame was placed entirely on the conservative part and America instead of the actual terrorist. I just have to wonder if other people feel that way.

Oh, sorry! I skipped over this one! Obviously, your friend didn't tell you about our last fucking horrible fascist conservative government. No, he (or she) only told you what our sold press want us to think. I'm pretty much an anarchist if you ask me, and I don't know if socialists won thanks to the terrorists, but it was the best think that could have happened to this country.

Posted - 03/09/2005 : 07:59:39 That is scary Simon. I think you would definitely bneed to talk to him and find out if hes actually knows what the BNP stand for.
I used to get so so so angry with people who were racist, sexist, homophobic et al. Ive carmed down a bit now, I understand when people are joking, and are not actually racist, when people use words to describe ethnic minorities in order to put a point across about another sect of society. I used to go mad at the slight notion of anything racist.
It turns my stomach. If the BNP ever, by some freak reason got in to power, these no question I would move.
That what I love about Brighton - how multicultural it is. Mostly students and travellers, but you walk through the streets hearing hundreds of differentpeople speaking different languages. its a rely nice sound.
Also, surfer rosa, I used to have this boy in my class at school. He was south african,. Not at all rcist, lovely guy. and these two new boys joined the school, from south africa, and they were black. They found out he was south african, and basically put him in to hospital, without even knowing him. They assumed he was like some other white south africans they have encountered. They didnt give him a chance.

Posted - 03/09/2005 : 05:42:50 It's rather amusing and unbelievably scarey to be a south african living in the UK. The amount of people who asume simply because of my nationality that I will share their racist views with them is frankly terrifying. Equally astounding is the people who rant on to me about immigrants forgetting that I'm one.

I found this on the BNP website: http://www.bnp.org.uk/columnists/brimstone2.php?leeId=30 I'm going to have to say something to him, at least convince him to research the party before he does anything rash. I was familiar with their broad policies myself, but having done a little research, points such as the following are kind of worrying:
2) Immediate withdrawal from the European Convention of Human Rights.
23) All those that are importers of drugs, bushmeat, weapons etc will be deported with their dependents. Halal and Kosher meat production and sale will be banned in the UK and all importers of the banned meats will face ten years in prison for animal cruelty.
34) All new mosques, temples and synagogues stopped from being built in the future unless a strong local requirement for the new mosque, temple etc is demonstrated and a majority of the local people agree with the planning proposal in a referendum on the issue.
39) All those that get a criminal record if an immigrant in Britain deported with their dependents.

how fucking retarded are these people, do they have any idea about halal killing, about the love and care that goes into it rather than the mass mindless slaughter of cattle for food, rather than suspending pigs on hooks and electrifying them which is barbaric, oh my christ

Posted - 03/08/2005 : 15:51:39 One of the big reason I love london do much is because it is so multicultural. I hope that never changes. |

Posted - 03/08/2005 : 15:51:34 i used to live in moseley in birmingham which is well known around there as being very multicultural and it was fantastic, just superb, one of the nicest places i have ever lived
i remember going to work one morning (i'm sure i've mentioned this before) and waiting for the bus noticed that someone had stalped BNP pamphlet holders stuffed full of racist pamphlets to the bus stop, i tore it town and threw it in the bin then went round checking the rest of the bus stops, i was late for work but when i told my boss why she was completely ok with it.
it really sickens me, i remember arguing with the girl i mentioned in my last post while she was going on about multicultural society and it's ills while we were out to dinner in fact, it got quite heated and she wouldn't have any of it, kept repeating her taking our this/taking our that argument louder and louder... so very small minded

Posted - 03/08/2005 : 15:40:53 With all due respect Kathryn, I understand what you mean, and I'm very thankful for living in the UK despite its faults, but we're talking properly extreme right. Patriot Act (or whatever) or no, the Republican party is still grounded in comparatively moderate centre politics. The BNP is very literally a far-right fascist organisation - you can see their manifesto at their website: www.bnp.org.uk, and see an undercover BBC report here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/3896213.stm
I live in London, which is one of the most multicultural parts of the world, and in my humble opinion, so much the better for it. The figures for asylum seekers claiming benefits are minimal, especially when compared to the number of 'indiginous' Britons doing the same. Pretty much their entire argument falls down under examination, but still the party attracts people. Its a mystery to me.

Posted - 03/08/2005 : 15:37:53 It is worrying just how many comments you hear from people here now who are basically racist. They will argue that they are not, but there are no two ways about it, they are plain racist. Just because they don't all talk of their hatred for non-whites, they still use these "they are coming over here and stealing our jobs", "they are coming over here and robbing our houses", "they are coming over here and living off our taxes" lines blah blah blah. I am fucking sick of hearing it to be honest with you. I don't get invlolved, I just ignore them for the most part, 'cos if I did then I could possibly ending up getting a little too wound up and deck one of them, and violence solves absolutely bugger all. But really, they just don't have any idea what they are talking about. Some of them make these comments born out of frustration out of not being able to get a job themselves, or from working too much, but it's no excuse really at all.
There are a lot of things wrong with society today, as there always has been, but mullticulturalism is not of them. It's vital. |

Posted - 03/08/2005 : 15:15:31 Simon, you make your points so eloquently here and your subject matter is so very serious, so I hope you don't think I'm being flippant when I say, try living in America right now! Remember how I freaked out when the Bushies kept their ill-gotten White House posts during our last election? So many people here have these wacko "nuke 'em!" attitudes. You are right to be afraid.
I am also afraid of mrsa after last night's postings by Dayanara but that's off topic.

Posted - 03/08/2005 : 15:14:44 there is a girl on my course who sincerely believes in her debating skills and clearly believes she is always right in this girls opinion all immigrants and asylum seekers have come to the uk for free houses and to rape the benefits system, they're all out for what they can get pisstakers, her proof? she knows a girl who works in an office who has told her.
On my course I'd say 90% of the students are international, and recently we were put into groups by degree to do a presentation. In her group she was the only white girl, there was a girl called A lets say who is from wales (who is one of my closest friends on this course) and two guys from india, one of these guys messed about a bit and this borderline-racist girl lost her temper a few times at this one lad.
after one loss of temper this girl turned to A and said "you know, these lads coming in from india and everyone like them are the reason the bnp are doing so well in the country"
A's jaw drops
"oh no, I don't mean you, you were born here you're alright"
i have to say, i have no worries about awkwardness and haven't spoken a word to this girl since then, unbe-fucking-lievable
