Easley McCain Studio Destroyed by Fire: Latest from Silver Jews Lost The legendary Easley McCain recording studio in Memphis suffered considerable damage from an electrical fire on Wednesday. The studio was used by some of our greatest, including Pavement, Sonic Youth, Guided by Voices, Jack White and Loretta Lynn, Modest Mouse, the White Stripes, Cat Power, Wilco and Jeff Buckley, who was recording there when he disappeared in 1997. In losing the Easley McCain we didn't just lose a piece of history, as Donewaiting reports we also lost the latest Silver Jews recording, scheduled to be mastered this weekend. Apparently the recording which marked a 3/5 reunion of Pavement was delivered to the studio the morning of the fire.
I was really looking forward to this release, and possible tour. Hopefully things will resolve themselves.

Ray Suzuki reports: Memphis' famed Easley McCain recording studio was devastated by an electrical fire last week. Among the casualties was believed to be the destruction of the studio's masters and the forthcoming Silver Jews record, which had arrived at the studio on the morning of the fire. A complete assessment of the fire's damage has not yet been made, but despite early reports claiming the record-- due to be mastered last weekend-- was irrevocably missing, the tapes now appear unharmed.
There were no injuries reported, despite the speed with which the fire spread through the studio. "The inspector said that two fires broke out at the same time at opposite ends of the building, due to some electrical reason," Easley engineer Kevin Cubbins told Rolling Stone. "Within 15, 20 seconds, the whole place was engulfed."
Easley McCain was the first structure built in the famed music town for the sole purpose of being a recording studio. It initially housed producer and songwriter Chips Moman before becoming the home of the Bar-Kays. In recent years, albums such as the White Stripes' White Blood Cells, Pavement's Wowee Zowee, and Loretta Lynn's Van Lear Rose were recorded or mixed here, as well as works from Sonic Youth, Wilco, Cat Power, Guided By Voices, and Alex Chilton, among others. Jeff Buckley was recording his sophomore album at the studio when he took his fatal swim in the Mississippi River.
Former Pavement stars Stephen Malkmus, Steve West, and Bob Nastanovich are all scheduled to appear on the upcoming Silver Jews album, which is slated for release on Drag City later this year.

Season 1, Episode 14. Lost and Found
After a month in the studio, Chris and the band have finally finished recording the title song for the new David Lynch movie. The next day, the studio burns down, taking with it the master recordings of the new song. Good thing Chris burned a CD version and brought it home. Now, if only he could find it. He tears his place apart and his cousin Ordell, who's also got a track on the same CD, stops by with a dowser, but the CD remains missing. As the clock ticks down to the deadline, it looks like they'll have to record it again. But can they do in four hours what it took four weeks to do the first time?
As the tension rises, Anson is wondering if his new girlfriend Deedee is responsible for the CD's disappearance. After all, she is an obsessive collector who's already got Dave Matthews' old Snapple bottle and Flea's toothbrush, not to mention Alanis' barrette. Yola, meanwhile, is exploring her creative side in a pottery class run by a charismatic and hunky ceramics artist named Stone. |

Posted - 03/06/2005 : 17:44:39 that is really sad. talk about bad luck.
i can't believe they didn't have a back-up somewhere else. if it was recorded digitally, wouldn't they keep a back up somewhere else? that's pretty much the worst case (cliche) scenario you can imagine. the whole building burning down.

Posted - 03/06/2005 : 17:11:53 That is a kick in the gut. The new Silver Jews album had some amazing sounding song titles, and had Stephen Malkmus back on board. I cannot believe that they would not have a back-up of it somewhere, but I don't know how those things work. You would think that the recording studio where it was recorded would have a copy since it was "delivered" that day to the place that burned.
