Posted - 03/02/2005 : 11:25:10 I've been listening to Mr. Sprout quite a bit lately. For those of you who don't know, Tobin Sprout was in Guided By Voices for about 6 years and wrote a number of fantastic songs for the band. Many GBV fans took note of the fact that while Sprout wasn't as prolific of a songwriter as Robert Pollard, he was far more consistent. Pollard can't seem to seperate his gold from his shit.
I'd say that with the exception of the GBV album Bee Thousand, I like Tobin Sprout's solo records more than GBV records (and Bee Thousand has a number of Sprout songs, so maybe that's partially why it's so damn strong).
What I really like about Sprout's songs and the way his music is played and recorded is how fragile they seem, they have a very dream-like quality. There's an enchanting innocence to them, but at the same time very wise.
Carnival Boy and Moonflower Plastic (Welcome to my Wigwam) are the two albums of his I know. I just picked up the new double-disc live album "Live At the Horseshoe Tavern" and it's great. A nice mixture of Sprout's GBV and solo career songs. 14 Cheerleader Coldfront has got to be one of the most perfect songs ever. The second CD has some beautiful demos after the concert, too.
Any other Tobin fans around here?

Posted - 04/07/2006 : 01:21:01 Airport 5 is great! I only have their second album, but it's filled with great melodies. I have the 2 solo records TarTar mentions, and those are wicked too. Eyesinweasel, is a bit less cool, though. Maybe Tobin is a bit more constant than mr.Pollard, but 5 cool Tobin discs can't outweight the 20 cool Pollard discs I have

I have Moonflower Plastic. It's a very pleasant, mellow reocord. Angles Hang Their Socks on the moon is very nice. I don't have anything else. He started a new project a few years back called "eyeinweasel", I didn't really hear any of it. I like his work with GbV a lot, especially his songs on Under the Bushes, Under the Stars. To Remake The Young Flyer is classic.
Have you heard any of the Airpot 5 stuff? It's Toby's music with Bob's lyrics. Some of it is excellent. They put out two albums.
I also love Tobin's artwork, it's really spectacular. "Photorealistic" painting. http://www.tobinsprout.com Some of his artwork is in the Moonflower Plastic album.

"Let Go Of My Beautiful Balloon" is a really beautiful song.

He must live in Michigan, as his gallery is in Leland, MI. Wonder how far that is from here. Lemme go check real quick.
Whoa, that's just over four hours north of here.
