Standing on the corner, suitcase in my hand
Jack is in his corset, Jane is in her vest
And me, I'm in a rock'n'roll band
Ridin'a stutz bearcat, Jim
You know, those were different times
Oh, all the poets, they studied rules of verse
And those ladies, they rolled their eyes
Sweet Jane, sweet Jane, sweet Jane

Jack, he is a banker
And Jane, she is a clerk
And both of them save their monies
when they come home from work
Ooh, they be sittin' down by the fire
Oh, the radio does play
The classical music, said Jim, the `march of the wooden soldiers`
All you protest kids, you can hear Jack say, get ready
Sweet Jane, come on, baby
Sweet Jane, sweet Jane

Some people, they like to go out dancing
Other peoples, they have to work
Just watch me now
And there's some evil mothers
Well they're gonna tell you that everything is just dirt
You know, that women never really faint
And that villains always blink their eyes
And that, you know, children are the only ones who blush
And that life is just to die
But anyone who ever had a heart
Oh, they wouldn't turn around and break it
And anyone who's ever played a part
Oh, they wouldn't turn around and hate it

Sweet Jane, sweet Jane, sweet Jane ...

I will show you fear in a handful of dust

CJ version was nice.

Reminds me of that period in the 90's where that tune, the Sunday's version of Wild Horses and MotherLoveBone's Chloe Dancer could be all heard in one night several times in several different places.

I'm old and my jeans are ripped.

Don't be lumping me and Homers together, D.

It turns out we are 15 years apart in age.

Speaking of Sweet Jane, there are roughly two versions of this song, the Loaded version (the one Monsieur posted) and the Live 1969 version (the one that Cowboy Junkies covered). Now, legend goes that Sweet Jane from the Live 1969 album (the green one with a woman's? butt on it) was recorded on the very same day that it was written. That would probably mean that the Live 1969 version vas written before the Loaded version, but somehow this never made sense to me since the Live 1969 version sounds very much like a summary of the Loaded version. Anyone has any clue on this?
About the "Heavenly wine and roses" part, it was originally also a part of the Loaded version, but apparently the produces (and I think Doug Yule had his part in this as well) decided to cut it out (sadly) without even telling Lou Reed about it (the band ceased to exist before Loaded was finished). Too bad for the song.

Lou Reed, I love him, I'm going to see him in May... I hope!

Floop singing and playing? Is that true?

Cowboy Junkies. The only thing that will make me
ashamed to be Canadian when I land my Canadian
citizenship.

Nice song, Monsieur. Thank you. And Lou, too.

Love the song, love the Cowboy Junkies version. Lou Reed once said he thinks the CJ version is the best cover of any of his songs ever.

the CJ version is not exactly like the VU's but has additional lyrics (the heavenly...lalala bits). These aren't just made up or anything...you can hear the VU sing 'em if you listen to several of the live VU "Sweet Jane"s...

love the song--cj AND vu versions...

Love their version though.

You mean the Cowboy Junkies don't sing the lyrics of the VU song? I had never noticed.

Gotta love the VU.

Remember when the Cowboy Junkies did the song Sweet Jane?

Anyone who’s ever had a heart
Wouldn’t turn around and break it
And anyone who’s ever played a part
Wouldn’t turn around and hate it
Sweet jane, sweet jane
Sweet, sweet jane

You’re waiting for jimmy down in the alley
Waiting there for him to come back home
Waiting down on the corner
And thinking of ways to get back home
Sweet jane, sweet jane
Sweet, sweet jane

Anyone who’s ever had a dream
Anyone who’s ever played a part
Anyone who’s ever been lonely
And anyone who’s ever split apart
Sweet jane, sweet jane
Sweet, sweet jane

Heavenly widened roses
Seem to whisper to me when you smile
Heavenly widened roses
Seem to whisper to me when you smile

La la la la, la la la...

Sweet jane
Sweet, sweet jane
