Posted - 02/23/2005 : 12:49:01 How cool is that?
I can play whatever I want.
My "law" is that 10 songs do not go by without playing at least one Frank Black song. Actually, my personal feeling is that that ratio should be a little bit tighter, but oh well.
Right now, I'll be doing it once a month or so. But it was pretty cool that they provided "on the job" training. It's fun to learn about all the behind the scenes stuff at a radio station, which always interested me. I've done it once so far, and it went really well, and I look forward to doing it again.
That's all.

I was talking to our station manager about internet streaming, and he said they currently are not set up to stream, but they used to, which is why they are listed on that site. But he said by summertime they will be set up again.
When they do, I'll be doing a Frank Black top 50 countdown...in which I'll need to enlist your guys' help.

Posted - 03/02/2005 : 16:55:07 My step-dad runs a pirate station. And yeah...he plays Frank Black too. Billy Radcliffe and Man of Steel are two of his favorites. He does the broadcast once a week, usually until he's too drunk to press any more buttons.

I ran a couple of shows over Brighton Festival. That was a laugh...
hot tip - DO NOT drink wine in the studio, or before hand for that matter.

That is amazing. I can't believe it was that easy. Were you the only one who applied or were you chosen from a few candidates?
I wish a cool station here would do that.

There were about 7 or so at that preliminary workshop, but as far as I know, there is only one other one on there that I've heard that attended that workshop.
A lot of it is running basic sound equipment, mixers, mics, etc., and I have quite a bit of experience with a lot of that stuff. So, I think that got me comfortable pretty quickly, and they realized that too, so they just let me go.
However, there is enough new stuff to keep me on my toes about what needs to happen next.

Way cool Calistanian. Did you have much prior radio experience to this, or is this your first go at it? I guess because you were impressed by all the behind the scenes stuff, it was your first time, so how'd you manage to score such a great gig? I'm jealous! When I go to college, I'd love to work the radio station. I'll be listening on the 16th hopefully.
Are you honest when no one's looking? Can you summon honey from a telephone? They sat there with their hooks in the water and their mustaches caked with airplane glue.
No radio experience. So, that makes it kind of fun, and keeps me on my toes. I kept it pretty simple the first time....basic song announcing, weather updates, etc.
Well, I had been listening to the station awhile, and they had advertisements for people to volunteer (that's right, I'm not getting paid). So, I called up, and sat through kind of a short workshop, to find out more about it. Then the manager asked me to come and observe one night if I wanted. So, I did that on a Monday (about a month ago), and then he asked if I wanted to come back Wednesday. So, I figured "Yeah, I'll come back and observe again." But then he says: "No, you can take the shift if you want." And I was like "Sure." So, then I go there and he said, "Okay take over." So, he stayed for about an hour, to make sure I wasn't having problems, and then he said "Okay, I'm going to take off, I think you've got the hang of it." All in all, it was a pretty funny situation.

Yes, they are. It's a college station. It's 90.1 FM, KSRQ, Thief River Falls, MN.
http://www.web-radio.com/fr_var.cfm KSRQ should be about a 1/4 of the way down that list. I haven't tried it myself yet, though.
No show name yet. No "radio" name yet either, although "The Calistanian" sounds like a good one to me. My next gig is March 16th, from 7-11 p.m.
I look at it as a public service. People as a whole are Frank Black deprived, and I feel it's my duty to force it on them for their own good. After all, my motto is:
"It's not what the listeners want to hear, it's what I want the listeners to hear."
