I only recently started getting into Will Oldham and all his incarnations, but the stuff I like I really really like.

I wanted to share this video Drag City has up for the single "No More Workhorse Blues". Something about it really grips me, both the song and the ...quiet? yet disturbing video. Andrew Bird plays violin on this.

Bonnie Prince Billy is touring right now -we'll be seeing him w/Matt Sweeney (for Superwolf) in April.

Any other fans? We have some Palace (There Is No-One What Will Take Care of You), BPB Sings Greatest Palace Music, I See A Darkness, and Superwolf. This guy is so prolific, and it seems a little hit-and-miss - what should I get next? What are your thoughts on his music?

Got it and back at ya.

I've been listening to "Sings Greatest Palace Hits", and boy howdy! that's a lot of country-fried music. Not sure how I'm liking it, but to be fair I've only heard the first couple songs. We picked it up on one of our tri-annual cd shopping sprees and I hadn't even given it a listen yet. I'm absent-minded more and more these days.

Thanks apl, I've sent an e-mail (just noticed your edit)

I think it hasn't been released yet, far as I know. It's mentioned here on his blog: http://electropopmedia.com/papa-m/index.php?p=237
It will probably be a while before it's released, now that Slint are back together and touring.

If you like that I think you'll really like most of the rest. I'd be happy to share some mp3s or mix cd if you're interested. :)

I've just listened to Papa M's High Lonesome Moan and really liked it from the start. I want to hear more but eptonic is down at the moment. Apl, do you know from which record this song was taken? Anyone curious can listen to it here http://www.papa-m.com/index2.html You'll have to play the video but it is worth it for the music.

The BPB/ Sweeny project is growing on me. I Gave You, the final song, is very good as well. Sweeny's guitar has brought a much needed change in sound into Oldham's music. I much prefer this collaboration than the efforts on BPB sings Greatest Palace Music where some of my favorite Palace songs have been painted over by a middle of the road country and western sheen. There are a few BPB tracks on the Domino site http://www.dominorecordco.com/site/index.php?page=multimedia&artistID=39&view=audio if anyone wants to listen.

What do you take me for Apl, some kind of rebellious teenager?? Breaking the law, sneaking into shows, breaking curfew, my word. I seriously wish I had the guts to do fun stuff like that, but that isn't exactly my stlye. I've always been the type to pipe up whenever I was afraid of breaking the rules when I'm with my friends, so the whole sneaking in thing is sort of out of the picture. Hopefully, with crossed fingers, it'll be 16+.

As for Slint, I was about to buy tickets when my ride fell through. I'm still searching out a ride, and although tickets have sold out, I could always buy a scalped pair off of ebay. I can't allow myself to get worked up though, its just another addition to the long list of shows that "Michael isn't old enough to see, either because he can't drive or the venue owners are pricks".

Oh, and thanks for the other link.

I forgot to mention I love the vocal harmonies (Matt and Will) on Superwolf.

Sir Mike, that blows about the 18+, if that's the case for this show. I hope that you can work something out to get to see them. Surely there is something you can do. Have you checked the perimeter of the establishment for loose bars over the bathroom windows? Maybe a tunnel from the storm drains under the street? People need to realize that the music needs to get to more than just the legal beer-drinkers damnit.

Are you gonna be seeing Slint? I know they're playing NYC at Irving Plaza for 3 nights (March 17, 18, and 19) - and that one's all ages.

Found another Superwolf song -it's in Real Audio, about halfway make that 2/3s of the way down:

Thanks for the link Apl. I bought I see a Darkness after posting a BPB thread here a few months ago, and it was one of the best finds I've had in a while. Sweeney and Oldham are playing near me on a Thursday night in April, so odds are I wouldn't be allowed to attend. Also, it is at the Bowery Ballroom, which is a venue notorious (at least in my book) for putting on shows that I want to see that are 18+. Maybe with a little luck I'll find a way to get there, but I doubt it.

Apl4eris, what a strange video...I'm not very familiar with his music, I've heard something but not much. Thanks for posting it.

I'm enjoying Superwolf. I love Matt Sweeny for his work in Chavez (and to a much lesser extent, Guided By Voices), and his guitar work on this album is great. This is the first Will Oldham project I've purchased, but I've listened to and enjoyed I See A Darkness as well. I really need to look into Palace more, it kinda went over my head when I was younger, but I think I'll like it now, especially since such esteemed fb.netters have given it (and BPB) so much praise (not to mention music critics in general).

Gee I had a reply all typed out and was about to send it and my computer said "mwahahahah!

bite me."

I was going to say, so far I really like about half of the album, the other half being a little too lullaby-ey for me at the moment, but I have a feeling it will eventually grow on me. My favorite song is also "Beast for Thee". Will can write great lyrics when he wants to.

Have you heard any Papa M or Aerial M, Wilhelm? It's Dave Pajo, from Slint, who also was involved with Palace and Palace Brothers. If you haven't heard it, I think you would really enjoy it. I'm glad you liked the video! Thanks a lot for the suggestions.

Thanks for the link Apl, I just watched the video and love it. The music is far more produced than the version I have on the Palace Brothers cd. Probably the BPB sings Palace version?

I've been listening to Palace/Oldham/BPB for a few years, cannot get enough. There is no-one and Darkness have always been favorites but I recently rediscoverred Ease Down The Road after Monsieur posted the title song's lyrics. It is a little "lighter" than the other two but the songs are incredibly good. Master and Everyone isn't too bad either.

Palace Brothers and Lost Blues and other songs are worth checking out from the Palace period. The first very lo-fi and rickety.

What are your thoughts on Superwolf? I'm slowly getting into it, Beast For Thee my favorite at present.

I wish I was going to see BPB in April.
