I've heard a few folks say they aren't a great live band. I don't know, never seen them live. But I think they are a brilliant band none-the-less. I don't give a rat's behind about "tortured geniuses" - frankly I don't really care if tweedy (or Frank Black for that matter) are total pricks - I just listen to the songs. Personally, I think Being There is my favorite of their records, but I like Summerteeth and YHF a lot too. Haven't actually heard the most recent one at all. The collections they did with Billy Bragg were great too...

Wilco is a band that came so highly recommended to me that I bought a ticket to see them without hearing one note of their music. They were okay, nothing to write home about. I don't feel like it was a waste of money or anything but they left me pretty indifferent.

Mem’ries,
Like the corners of my mind
Misty water-colored memories
Of the way we were
Scattered pictures,
Of the smiles we left behind
Smiles we gave to one another
For the way we were
Can it be that it was all so simple then?
Or has time re-written every line?
If we had the chance to do it all again
Tell me, would we? could we?
Mem’ries, may be beautiful and yet
What’s too painful to remember
We simply choose to forget
So it’s the laughter
We will remember
Whenever we remember...
The way we were...
The way we were...

Here's my suggestion. Start off small. Pick a band that obviously sucks (say the Eagles) and dump on them for awhile. Then when you have your confidence, move up to harder calls (like Pearl Jam or Radiohead). Next thing you know you'll be snapping off judgments with that feeling of rightfulness.

You can eventually get up to criticizing those overrated boy bands, the Pixies and the Catholics.

Anyway, I'm really not familiar with Wilco. I think I've heard a song or two, but I can't remember them well enough to really comment on them. I DO think the album they did with the Minus 5 kicks ass, but then, the Minus 5 kick ass in general.

difficult can be good. when difficult means interesting..

Wilco is the oppoiste; they're "difficult" to listen to because, well, they're boring

I skip the noise too, though I still find it annoying in that it's interrupted the flow of the album (by making me skip) and that it seems like a sad attempt at being 'artsy'. Just because it can be skipped doesn't mean it's exempt from criticism.

I quite enjoy GIB, and Summer Teeth too. And I agree that YHF is overhyped. Maybe Wilco at large is overhyped. But how, Mr. Floop, does that change the music?

PS Insignificance is a good l'il record, Rita.

I was addressing the critics who have described this as Wilco's "difficult" album. I guess for me, I just find YHF more difficult to get into. That doesn't really make any more or less good, it's just that I listen to Ghost all the time and I rarely listen to YHF.
