Does anybody here like Thom Jones, the writer of excellent short stories, not the singer of cheesy songs?
I loved loved loved "Sonny Liston Was a Friend of Mine" and "Pugilist at rest." I love the crazed nam vet/fighter turned janitor schpiel, the way he writes, what he writes about. Any other fans here?

i will pick it up tomorrow or thursday from the library - they appear to only have "the pugilist at rest"

Brian, will you trust me on this? Pure blind trust? Shell out
twelve bucks -- or go to your local library? Thom Jones
"Sonny Liston was a friend of mine" or "The Pugilist
at rest." I guarantee you will like his stuff, or at least find
it compelling.

His is brilliant, dare I say "male" writing. Try to score a copy
of "Pugilist at Rest." You won't be disappointed!

Yeah I´ve read Sonny Liston was a Friend of Mine, I found it a library in Ireland at random a couple of years ago. There are passages of brilliant light all the way through it, I felt. My favourites were the stories about a guy living with his mother and her morphine (think I stole a phrase from it for a story of my own), soldiers on leave in Tijuana, and a swimmer.
