I never thought it would happen: I'm contemplating giving up beer. A friend of mine told me that he gave up beer and with a little extra exercise lost almost 2 stone (actually 26 pounds, or about 11-12kg) in a year.

What I need is an alternative. I like beer, but I guess I can live without it. Anyone had the Michelob Ultra? Sports beer apparently, I'm not sure...

Apparently, something like gin/vodka & tonic is not so bad - any other suggestions?

I can see the whole - men+wine=sex equation...for me it depends what mood im in, sometimes i like a man that can sit there and drink pint after pint, sometimes a i prefer a spirit man. Wine for me works best when they are drinking it wearing a suit/suit jacket, or smart in some way. If not then Whiskey is the best opt.

So basically you will take any man as long as he drinks.

Not really. I tend to drink more often, but not so much large amounts (i.e. enough to make me hungover). To be fair, it wouldn't take a hangover to steer me clear of physical exercise, I can manage that all by myself, thanks .

I think I do the 20 mins/3 times a week, at least. I try and make myself get off the train a stop early, which gives me a bit of a hike. But you're right, if I go to the pub after work, I'm not mad keen on a 20 minute walk.

Don't talk to me about sticks of butter though, a man's gotta have one vice...

What are you talking about "here in the US"?!
You're from Reunion Island?

Don't tell me you're fibbing about that.

1. I am a fsh with no i's.
2. You must be wearing Zubaz, 'cause you're daring to be different.
3. I am a man with 3 fingers...but that doesn't count my index finger nor my thumb.

Why is everyone trying to stop this man from giving up drinking?
Why not let him go with that?

You said it was becoming 'regular'...this means you are drinking more regularly, right?

If true, then this means you have more days where you are at least slightly hungover.
This means that you are less inclined be physically active...see where I'm going?

Quit it man, if you want to.

Lay off the sauce, get some exercise, make a few diet changes.

You'll lose weight.

Bullocks.
I will always say this:
Break a sweat for at least 20 minutes at least 3 times a week and you'll lose weight.

Also cut out the sticks of butter as snacks.

I was gonna say that the girls will dig you drinking wine, but it's only a guess. I'd go with red though.

G&T is vile by the way.

There may be something in that Carolyn, I quite liked the fact that the ex liked what he liked and didn't much care what he was supposed to like. He'd order a pint and a G&T at the bar, they'd pour the pint first and hand it to him, and he would without blinking hand it straight to me, never even noticed the phased look on the barman, didn't care!

aaah I might have to go make a phone call now...

Heheh, yeah I know, unreconstructed geezer and everything... Actually, I do like the odd G&T, so that may work.

But still: it'll be summer soon, and I'll want beer! I... must... be...strong...

Of course it can be overcome!

If it bothers you that much you could

a) convince someone sharing a bottle would be cheaper than buying a couple of glasses of wine (which it is)
b) send a girl
c) order for a few people at a time making sure there is at least one pint in there so you can make out the spirit and tonic/ wine is for someone else.

the ex was a big fan of the G&T and would order his own and he was a proper northen bloke and everything. I would have thought in London of all places it would be a less self conscious act, what with it being so cosmopolitan and everything...

Metrosexual? Do I need to groom more? I still think I'd feel kind of funny ordering wine in a pub (neanderthal that I am), but I'm sure it can be overcome. Jack and coke will do me fine for now though I guess (mmm, sugary fats)

Depends what you mean by 'get away with'. If you mean does it look a bit 'girly' then who cares?

If that really bothers you then go for the spirit option I guess.

Cheeseman1000 Posted - 02/01/2005 : 04:54:03
Ah. Yes. That probably makes more sense.

Still a secret.

A question: can men get away with ordering wine in a pub now?

I've got worse I'm afraid. I don't really drink lots all in one go, but its more regular now. I think cutting out beer would be a reasonably significant factor.

I have to agree with floop, it's unbelievable the amount of people who tell me they want to lose weight, but don't want to exercise. I can't believe how some people just don't realise how important it is. We were not made to sit on our arses.

Even 10,000 posts a day man is as fit as a fiddle.

You don't need to give anything up. Two key things to remember:

1) portion control (moderation in all things except exercise...you have to attack your workouts).
2) when you drink, skip the beer (which is like liquid loaves of bread) and drink
a stiff drink or wine on a near-empty stomach.

Give up eating altogether. That will cut your weight right there. Keep drinking as normal. I'm sure you can find some cool breakfast shakes to get you through the day...because that would not really be eating then, would it? That would still be following the "all-drinking plan" I have just proposed.
