is it the syd barrett-led style (piper at the gates of down), or the "psychedelic" era (saucerful 'til meddle). what about water's driven megamanic spectacles (dark side until final cut) and gilmour's afterglow (lapse & divison bell) ?
as much as i reckon syd barrett as one of the greatest song writers ever, if not the king of all, i go for the waters period. "animals" is my favourite, i guess.

It is a really interesting choice,
to record by yourselves in some old coliseum.
Is Pompei named something else now?
Is there anything else there?

Until yesterday I had never heard Live in Pompei!
My lord I missed out, its excellent.
Does anyone know why they chose to record in Pompei?

I think PF is one of those band that has done an awesome job of evolving and reinventing itself. I would say I love the Wall because that was my first exposure to them. I remember driving to Kindergarden and myself and the other kids are singing along to we don't need no education! I was banned from singing that song-- but I sung it anyway!!
I do like the Syd Era. Dark Side is also a great album. I would say the newer stuff when it came out-- I couldn't stand but now it's really grown on me.
I must thank my childhood best friend for exposing me to PF. Her brother loved them and passed them down to her. I remember listening to all their albums and she tought me everything I know about them. I even remember watching the Wall in her basement. That movie is wild but I like it. |

Syd-era, although I love DSotM...Wish You Were Here is swell, too.
But Syd Barrett is one of my musical heroes.
I guess I just wasn't made for these times. |

"Green is the colour" is amazing, still holds up after all these years.
As does this "Fat Old Sun," the music much more so than the lyrics.

I agree, definitely. The first time I heard Fearless was definitely an 'ooooh' moment. Apparently its a recording of the Kop (this is an infamously partisan block of terraces at Anfield, which is the home ground of Liverpool football club), and this sort of thing just hadn't been done before. Its also a really good song, with a brilliant riff.

To answer your most excellent question, 2reelers, I say, the earlier
the better. I don't care much for their stadium-rock era (though I have
enjoyed many a stadium show of theirs). Gimme early Floyd -
Barrett and even early Waters.
Anybody have an old vinyl bootleg called Dark Side of the Moo?

All of em. There's a favorite album or two from every incarnation, but I grew to love them first through DSotM, Meddle, and Relic.
"The Wall" the movie bothers me a little bit now - its popularization of that concept album kinda made it go flat. To me it seems like either the movie, or maybe just the response to the movie, characterized their music as drugs and angst and rock-idolatry for the stoner outsider teenage boy (all minus the implied irony), which is really unfortunate. Some of the songs from that album managed to escape that context for me though.
The music is still majestic to me. Maybe I'm still naive...it could happen. ;)

They were one of my Dad's favorite bands so I grew up listening to them through the '70s. I still listen to Meddle on fairly regular basis ("Fearless" is such a fantastic song). Occasionally I listen to Dark Side but there are only a few songs that grab me anymore. I recently listened to Obscured by Clouds for the first time in ages. It's an underrated album. Side 1 is especially good. |

yeah, that is a point. "Dark side of the moon", this captures feelings almost any not completely mindless youngster has. disorienation, fear about life, madness, slightly zen. and it is packed in very good, very smooth music. this record was in the billboard charts for 25 years, i think. so there is something touching in it. all their 70ies records revolve around very simple themes everybody encounters in his/her life.

I don't have a preference to an era in their career (though I know the 70's stuff best) so much as I have a preference to an era in my life. It was a lot of fun when I was younger, under the impression that Floyd's music was fantastic and otherworldly and flawless, it was something different and weird. Though I never was exactly obsessed with them, there was a mysticism and a... a... mythology to them. Something impenetrable. Something that made me just want to smoke pot and put headphones on and be in the sonic landscape of Pink Floyd... off on all sorts of fantastic voyages in uncharted territories of my mind.
Now I just think they're over-produced crap that gets played on classic rock stations way too much and too many people think of it as something way more special and important than it actually is.
I prefer the time when I thought it was majestic, just cuz I was younger or more naive then and everything seemed to be so much more important.

I know I haven't listened to them with much attention, maybe that's my prejudice. I don't usually like music because they are danceble, not at all...if you knew my musical tastes you would understand that.

try again ! what have you listened to so far ?
i know it's somehow completely the opposite to FB music, so head-oriented and serious. but parts of their music are still amazing. "Wish you were here" (the whole record) is my definition of timeless. when you put it on the record player, you don't know is it 60ies, 70ies, 90ies or something recent.
and "the wall", c'mon, nobody can dislike that ! i mean, of course you can dislike it, but the whole thing (record/movie/shows) is just so big and full of quality, it deserves attention and recognition.
and if you haven't listened to animals, do it !
i think the only thing that some people dislike PF is because that their music isn't danceable. they definitely have no groove, and if you like that in music, i get your point.

I like the megolomaniac era, The Wall, Wish You Were Here, etc.
Those are some amazing songs, and I love Gilmour's playing on those albums.
I like Meddle as well, I don't know if that fits into that era. Its on the cusp.
