I don't know if this thread is going anywhere but I was thinking about these movies I remember from when I was little, that I thought were truly amazing cinematic achievements. Then I rented them and realized they sucka de ass.

Two perfect examples are:

The Hills Have Eyes. I saw this at the drive in in Lowell Ma. I was about eight I think. I remember being scared out of my wits and thought it was a really great movie. I rented it not so long ago and shut it off after a very tedious thirty minutes. Just horrible. Not scary, just cheesey. Very seventies.

The other one was Soilent Green. I remember seeing this at about five or six. I thought it was great back then. I rented it and it was not very good. Nice neckerchief Charlton.

I also loved 'Night of the Living Dead' but now I'm afraid to rent it, out of fear of it's potential suckitude.

So that's my story.

I'd like to see The Goonies again-the DVD release has the octopuss scene that Data mysteriously refers to. I loved Return Of The Jedi as a kid, but it lost its attraction over the years-it starts well with Jabba, then goes downhill(too many Ewoks!)

"Logan's Run".

Of course, I haven't seen it since I was a kid, but have wanted to - just to see if it sucked.

I kind of knew Return of the Jedi was crap when it came out...but ate up the eye candy anyway.

"Over the Edge"...had Matt Dillon on it...TV movie i think.

"Corvette Summer"
Oh, the 70's.

That story had nothing to do with you/your father (I was talking about my friend).

[edit] sorry Dean, was meant to be a generalisation more than an accusation. I'm going to go sit quietly in a corner for a while now.

Yeah, just joshin' with 'ya Erebus, I'd feel guilty about that forever too. I had a friend in elementary school whose parents let him watch anything. He saw Sliver when he was in 3rd grade or something. He was, naturally, the one to come to school and spill about the birds & the bees. He actually grew up to be incredibly perverted to the point that a friend and I stopped hanging around with him. Some parents just don't think - it can be hard to reevaluate everything you watch once you're desensitized.

As a child I used to sit up with my dad late at night and watch zombie movies, his attempts to stop me thwarted every time by me being too wriggly and too facsinated, he said I used to sit cross legged on the floor transfixed to the screen going "eugh dad did you see the man go splatter" he gave up on me after that I think...

Thanks Dean. Big hugs man!

Hehe, Erebus, that was a nice story. Nice kid. I am not sure if I reacted like that, I guess I would have to ask my mum. Not that she'd rememeber, she probably left me alone. I do remember being shit scared of Darth though. Maybe that's why I got his suit for Christmas one year, so I could scare other kids. They were probably more scared without the mask.

Love, love, my season

As I thnk you know, COF, he wasn't traumatized as much as I was by thinking I may have bent him a bit. He was an innocent, highly empathetic kid who had never seen anything quite like it. Now he's nineteen, a freshman in college, and I still see him and his sister a few times a year. Good kids.

For me the parallel movie event, and subsequent memory, was of a police car in pursuit of a truck on a winding mountain road. But the guys in the truck were ready, and had the truck rigged with spigots that spewed oil behind the speeding truck, causing the police car to skid out of control over the cliff to burst into flames hundreds of feet below. That stuck with me. Never had seen a car explode and burn like that. Many years later I happened onto "Thunder Road" starring Robert Mitchum, and there was my scene. Made me wonder what my parents were thinking allowing us to watch that movie.

Mike, you're already my hero. Can't a person have more than one? No? Well then tough luck Mel, no room for bandwagon jumpers in my hero camp!

Erebus, yeah, I remember being shocked by it, so I can imagine, but there were no adults around, just older cousins who were themselves raptly attending to the movie. It wasn't traumatic by a long shot though, I'm not sure why. I guess it wasn't that gory, and he did get a new hand. I'm sure the kid has grown up well adjusted by now. Or maybe you were my babysitter? In which case, wow, did you ever destroy what could've been a good kid.

About fifteen years ago I was babysitting the four/five yo son of an ex-gf, and we watched Star Wars, which to him was pretty big stuff. But that scene made him gasp "I want his hand back on!" I thought "oh shit" and paused the tape, explaining 1) it's only a movie; 2) later he gets a new hand which is almost as good as the original; and 3) sometimes people, even good people, do have to fight against the bad guys and sometimes they get hurt. We returned to the movie then, but I'll always remember that gasp and how he looked at me.

Mary Poppins is a great film for kids. I'm a sucker for good dancers and Dick Van Dyke is great in Mary Poppins (you have to ignore his accent).

Hey I stuck up for Star Wars first! I wanna be your hero!

Mel, you've become my hero. Or rather, heroine.

Also, Gracie, I should add I'm a big fan of Mr. DvD.

The first star wars movie i saw was when i was 12. unfortunately it was episode 1...and my bf at the time loved star wars - long complicated story but due to the memories star wars evoked, i refused to watch it for years. Until i was 17 or 18, i watched all of them, and loved it., so i disagree with your theory Gracie!

my current bf has not ever seen star wars, and hes 25, so im gonna make him watch them soon, well, the trilogy at least, and see what he thinks.

I have a little darth vader on my keyring. its a lego one. just thought id add that cos it rocks.

Homers_pet_monkey Posted - 01/25/2005 : 09:56:41
Labrynth is indeed a good film. Seems to be particularly popular with girls for some reason.

Love, love, my season
speedy_m Posted - 01/25/2005 : 09:51:57
I saw Labriyth (yes Gracie, sp. but I don't know either) as a child and loved. Looking back, I know it still rules. Mostly because David Bowie is in it, and because of that big monster thing that says "smell baaaaaad". I KNOW floop will back me up on this....
Cult_Of_Frank Posted - 01/25/2005 : 09:50:42
Gracie, although I did see Star Wars as a child, I wasn't watching it as it was what the 'older kids' were watching while we ran around playing tag. II watched them for real for the first time when I was 15 and loved them and still do. I did remember a few really powerful scenes from when I was four, like Luke getting his hand cut off, the "I am your father" bit, hanging from the bottom of Cloud City and getting his hand replaced but nothing else really. I'm not even sure whether they watched ANH or ROTJ.

Also, I did see Ewoks when I was young, the cartoon series. So maybe that's something. I don't want to get into an argument, just showing you there are people out there that appreciate the movies and not just as pieces of nostalgia.

And so will you of Shitty Chitty, Bang Bang and Mary Pooppins.

Love, love, my season
gracie Posted - 01/25/2005 : 09:30:35
I still really like all my childhood films, Chitty Chitty, Bang Bang, Mary Poppins, Labriyth (sp?), Neverending story (i never knew that the horse actually died!), Dirty Dancing.

I do hate Stat Wars but they're not childhood films for me.

I have a theory that everyone who likes Star Wars likes it because they watched it as a child. I didn't see any of the original three until i was 18 and i thought they were all shit. I'm convinced that anyone watching the film for the first time as an adult will have better perspective and hate them!

The Apple Dumpling Gang! Oh my god, I almost forgot about that movie. I think if I saw it today I would have to say it sucked! My list (or least a few off the top of my head):

Best little Whore House in Texas
Condor Man
Flash Gordon
