Posted - 01/23/2005 : 11:05:04 Just heard on NPR that Johnny Carson died this morning. He was 79.
It's very sad, I feel like he was a big part of my childhood.
Anyway...thought people might not have heard it yet.

Posted - 01/24/2005 : 15:28:40 I regret not growing up in a generation exposed to Carson, or at least not to his nightly performances. I've heard his praises sung by many, and not just these past few days after his death, but forever. I just couldn't imagine myself going out and watching all of his shows. I guess some of us, the youngs ones I guess, will have to live in a world without Johnny.
I will never say the word procrastinate again, I'll never see myself in the mirror with my eyes closed. |

Posted - 01/24/2005 : 15:14:40 I think of him everytime I see an exit sign for "Slauson".
He seemed like a classy guy and he was nightly institution that gave the country a common experience that will never be matched again given cable and the internet. |

Posted - 01/23/2005 : 15:47:53 That wasn't a rumor. Letterman's producer, Peter Lassally, was Johnny's producer for years. Apparently the three of them have remained close friends. For years I kept wishing Johnny would come on the show for one last cameo, but I guess it was not to be. Dave released this statement today:
"It's a sad day for his family and for the country. All of us who came after are pretenders. We will no see the likes of him again. He gave me a start on his show and in doing so, gave me a career. A night doesn't go by that I don't ask myself, "What would Johnny have done?" He has been greatly missed since his retirement. Thank God for videotapes and DVDs. In this regard, he will always be around. He was the best. A star and a gentleman."
quote: Once asked what he would like his epitaph to read, Carson responded, "I'll be right back."

Posted - 01/23/2005 : 15:35:32 Just a few days ago there was a rumor that Johnny was contributing some jokes to David Letterman. Strange timing.
I could say I'll miss him, but I've already missed him since he left the Tonight Show in '92.

Posted - 01/23/2005 : 14:00:45 this freaks me out I just learned who Johnny Carson was exactly a week ago! I was watching the first tv appereance of Jerry Seinfeld on one of his new dvd's and there he was presenting the night show (which I know but with Jay Leno) and my friends introduced me to him. And now he's dead... life is strange Wasn't there a Beach Boys song named after him?

Johnny you will be missed. Those in heaven are in for a comedic treat. |

Posted - 01/23/2005 : 11:08:40 Oh man. This is indeed very, very sad. Johnny was a legend, he will be sorely missed. One of my earliest memories is of being allowed to stay up late and watch the Tonight Show. They just don't make 'em like that anymore.
