I just ordered an iBook which I am supposed to get today and I am VERY excited. I haven't been a Mac user in a long time, so is there anything I should know? Any Apple tips anyone wants to give me?

I can't wait! Wheeeee!

(and I can't stop exclaiming. Sorry.)

Gypsy, macs were made for that stuff! You can run all those apps on either a higher end iBook or powerbook...get what you can afford, of course but don't scrimp on RAM.

macs rock...and are VERY easy to use. remember, you can always post here w/ questions:)
darwin Posted - 02/03/2005 : 10:32:18
Mac has USB (had it before most PCs) and is better for film editting than PCs (I think). At least that is one of the markets that Apple has held onto over the years. You do pay more for a Mac.
GypsyDeath Posted - 02/03/2005 : 08:24:17
I am going to be buying a lap top soon, for when (if) i go to uni. Ive pondered the idea of macs, but i dont really know enought about them to spend that sort of money.

I would basically use my lap top for essays and the like, but also id be using photoshop, and have music on there....im also considering putting Adobe Premier Pro on there, so i can edit films at home...

My main concerns are is a mac could take all that? What sort of mac is best? Also i have a 256 USB pen - does it not screw things up, ttrying to take them from macs to PCs and visa versa....

floop Posted - 02/02/2005 : 11:15:03
it's a little exaggerated i'd say. but partially true. which is why it's funny.

personally i couldn't be happier with my powerbook G4, so i'm not complaining.. most of the systems i use for work are macs, so for me it only makes sense..

theoretically, i would consider getting a PC, in another life, but then i don't know if i'd want to sacrifice getting laid more

It's still being updated for Linux, isn't it? I think I got some updates about a month ago.

yeah, I'm sure you have a point there. I just never use it enough to care, and I kept meaning to install Open Office instead so I let it go. Now it looks like it (OpenOffice) won't be kept up anymore, which sucks. I like to have alternatives available, ya know?

Apl4eris...your office always crashes? you might have to install the updates from mactopia.com or reinstall. I had this prob. when I first got my g4 tower but not on my powerbook...after a reinstall and online update, all was peachy...

Just so ya know, the MS Office suite sucks on Mac. It's always crashing. There is a open source (free) mac version of this that is compatible w/MS Office apps though. You might want to try that instead. Or at least try it out. I have to admit I haven't installed it yet, but I don't generally have use for those type apps anymore. The only drawback is that they just decided not to keep developing it.

If you're curious to at least try it:
www.openoffice.org
find help here:

One thing I can definitely recommend from experience is Fire http://fire.sourceforge.net/
It's a free mac multiclient chat app that is FAR superior to AIM. You just download and add whatever AIM, yahoo, MSN etc. accounts you already have, or set up more, and you can use them all at once. It's very stable and safe compared to Aim's or MSN's chat apps. Lots of nice options too.

Meant also to say--if you don't have an iPod yet, GET ONE.

it will love your iBook too

tobafett Posted - 01/29/2005 : 22:06:25
Hey ramona...glad to hear you dig your iBook! macs rock...be sure to post any questions you have here or check apple's forums...the folks over there are VERY helpful and usually very quick to answer your questions.

if you hang around any college kids with macs, sometimes they get microsoft CDs from their university's IT dept...you may be able to bribe them with FB anecdotes.

not that I would condone that or anything. ;)

good luck and welcome back to the ranks of the highly intelligent folks who use macs!
:)

[edit]...also, if you want to download an image from the net, you can just click-n-drag it to your desktop...that works too!
frarosano Posted - 01/29/2005 : 22:05:15
i have an old imac.....
it work well, sometimes i have problem with programm, that pc use and on man don't work....

for example, my friend use guitar pro for writng tabs, mac can't read them....

however, ramona you made the best choice...
ramona Posted - 01/29/2005 : 19:19:05
Here's another question for all you Mac users. Does anyone have the install disc for Microsoft Word that I could possibly borrow?? I would send it right back if someone could send it to me, I just don't have $200 to spend on Word right now - especially since I just got fired. Life is full of surprises!

I think the Mac operating systems have always been smoother. Windows is jerky and has more trouble with initiation of tasks, softwares, installations, and, well, most things. It has gotten significantly better over the last few years of course, and the Mac is hardly perfect. The Mac does a great job of recognizing file types and taking the initiative with them. At work the systems administrator constantly has to attend to the Wintel PCs but at home I get by almost indefinitely by troubleshooting for myself. There's also the matter of the desktop design, which Windows of course emulates, but the Mac feels more elegantly functional to me.

Not to be cruel, but whereas Apple was able to get a foothold after DOS/Microsoft had already established its market and cultural dominance, had Apple come first there never would have been any PCs and most likely no Microsoft.

Aren't Macs generally for artistic types?

What are the advantages? I know people who rave about them but won't specify why they are so great. I've used a PC from day dot and it seems ok to me...

They just came out with a tiny little box of Mac that is about $500 (not including monitor or keyboard).
VoVat Posted - 01/22/2005 : 14:35:00
I've heard that Macs are better than PCs, but they're also more expensive, and I just don't have that kind of money to spend on a computer.

To save an image you can also hit cmd-S, which will open a save dialog box. If your screen shows just the image you want in the upper left of the screen, then the save dialog box will allow you to save just the image to whatever folder you select. However, if your screen shows a full webpage, hitting cmd-S will open the same dialog box to save the entire page, which I assume will usually not be what you intend. When I want to save just one image from a full page, I click on the image, hold down on the mouse, and a menu drops from the point of the click . Don't know how that last bit works on an iBook. I try to use keystroke commands whenever possible because the mouse wears on my wrists, plus I find the keystroke commands faster for me.
ramona Posted - 01/20/2005 : 18:08:24
You know, floop, I am in desperate need of all kinds of services.

Thanks for the menu info. I would have been here all night trying to figure it out.

Here's a stupid question: on a PC I would right click on my mouse to save an image from the Internet, but how do I do it on my Mac?
