Band 50 Foot Wave Copes With Bad Timing

01/17/2005 5:53 AM, AP
David Bauder

Rock singer Kristin Hersh had something else entirely in mind when she named her new band 50 Foot Wave.

Sometimes there's just not much you can do about bad timing.

"It's either on my part or God's, I'm not so sure," Hersh, a heroine of the alternative rock scene with her longtime band Throwing Muses, told The Associated Press in an interview.

The band's first full CD, which is being released in March, was mailed to rock critics about a week before Asia's devastating tsunami, which killed more than 160,000 people.

Hersh named the band after the audiophile term for the lowest sound audible to the human ear. It has a dual meaning, too, since there's a surf-punk vibe to her music.

The album's title, "Golden Ocean," is the phrase one of Hersh's four sons used to describe how the lights of Los Angeles look at night.

She said she never made the connection between her band's name and the Asian tragedy until someone phoned to point it out to her.

"I wasn't thinking about me," she said. "I was thinking about all of those people."

So what do you do when something you create, through no fault of your own, suddenly can make someone cringe? After the Sept. 11 attacks, images of the World Trade Center were quietly erased from movies and television shows, and plans for movies about terrorist attacks were shelved.

Hersh plans to stand fast and thinks most people won't make the connection.

"It was such a good name a month ago," she said.

This happened to Burning Airlines after 9/11. They actually had a gig that night and had to cancel it.

Oh yeah, and Anthrax. I forgot about that whole thing. Well, there you go. No one cares about their name anymore.

Will I ever reach 1000?

Yea, I thought of it too, right after the tsumami. But, I don't think anyone is going to blame the band. It's not like they named themselves after the event, they had that name for a long time before that. In some ways, maybe it will even help the band with name recognition.

I actually thought of this a few weeks ago. Just thought about how odd it would be to have to announce that name on stage right now. "Hi, we're Fifty Foot Wave. Ummmm." I also thought about how it would possibly be uncomfortable to sing "Wave of Mutilation".

"Hey fuck you if you don't like it."

I don't think Kristin should change their name unless they want to. I hope people don't call for it to happen.

I think most people will make the connection. I don't think she should change the band's name because of it though. The band was named before the disaster.

There is a lame Manic Street Preachers song titled Tsunami. The lyrics let on that the guy who wrote them had little idea what a tsunami was when he wrote it. I am sure he feels pretty stupid when he thinks of that song now
