Because Tre didn't want to have her real name (nickname?) associated with an account, I told her to go ahead and create a new account. Others asked for the same reason (I presumed it to be some sort of stalker related stuff) and I said "go ahead".

However, I made a mistake in doing this and while there are no reprecussions for those who've done so already, it is from hereforth a punishable offense (by death or worse) to create multiple accounts for any reason.

So please, no more multiple accounts. This is now FB.Net policy whatever your case may be.

Thanks,
Dean

I really don't see how changing a name is going to affect anonymity in the long run. Maybe for a short time - while everyone's trying to figure out who all of the "new" people are. But once it's figured out it won't matter. If I changed my name to "BillyBobJoe" and people figured out...I'll still be known as the person who was TheCroutonFuton. It will be like "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince".

Edit: Plus, this whole thing just draws more attention, does it not?

Did realmeanmotorscutor have a second account? i was never aware. (Unless I was him unbeknownst to myself or something...)

More likely the answer might be that when you post at warp speed, there are dillusionary effects. For example, if you were to actually be able to observe something coming at you at the speed of light, it would appear to be approaching you backwards. So, applying that to some of these people who post at extraordinary totals, one can only assume that their totals might actually be greater than what they appear to be.

Yeah, that's it.

Maybe this is an answer:

Sometimes when my Fred Flintstone Mac, as Dayanara
correctly calls it, slows down and it takes forever to
open a page, I get a message about "time expiring"
and the forum won't include any of my subsequent posts,
unless I quit and restart Explorer.

I don't know, strange actually. I would hardly demote my post count. Especially with Homer having surpassed me recently. :)

Deletion makes sense, but I've never noticed it before...

I was one of the first people here (except our friend Mark Spitz) to abandon my old account because my name is not very common in France and because I often post from my office, like right now (I know, it's Sunday...)

I am very nostalgic about my old nick of which I was very proud - it kind of reflected my personality. And I will probably never get as many kitties as I had before.

So, I am sorry if I unleashed the beast. I will punish myself by not eating cheese today.

Dean, when I apologize is because of the whole trouble I think I gave you and for coming back again with the same name, it made me feel like a childish thing that I've done, and I'm not a child anymore...It was never my intention!

P.S. About the adresses, I guess nobody is comming to Portugal...

VoVat:
The problems are many, and I'm sure using your imagination you can come up with some of them aside from just the potential abuse. Server load, people having problems transferring, the unnecessariness of it, etc are all good places to start. How much time was spent on the fact that Tre couldn't log in/register a new account? A lot. Not her fault, and, Rita (and Tre - I don't mean to target her, just providing an example), I don't need apologies so not accepted, because I gave you permission to do that. Time down the tubes. How much more time and effort would have been fruitless if Rita's account had been removed and she decided she wanted to go back. Or wanted her new account to have 1570 kitties. Or....

These are two people in what was looking to become a sort of landslide. And what does it create? A community of ghosts where you think you know one person or start to get to know them and then they disappear. And for the record, yes, I can track and match ISPs, but it's also a pain in the ass and time wasted.

For what benefit?

This has always been our policy, and I recently made some exceptions and regretted it, so I'm moving back to it. That's all.

Thanks (and again, I'm sorry to anyone I gave permission to so far as changing your name if you felt I was attacking you, not my intent at all, and it was entirely my fault for permitting it).

Finally, Cheeseman, I'm thrilled you want to die by my side, but I'm afraid you're over there and I'm over here and...

While I have never created a second screen name and have no intention of ever doing so, I do kind of wonder at the logic behind the policy. I mean, we're pretty much anonymous here anyway, unless we WANT to reveal personal details about ourselves. So why does it matter so much if we want to be anonymous under one name or two or three? I guess I can sort of understand it in light of people like Jason/The Swimmer/GoddessTheory, who kept coming back with different names and causing trouble, but I don't think that was a common thing. Besides, couldn't that kind of thing be discovered by comparing ISP addresses?

I'm not really complaining about the policy. I honestly don't much care one way or the other. I'm just curious.

Cliques, you know, I despise them. I prefer a more rounded outlook on things. You don't seem keen on them either but stand firm in yours, them vs us, and seem to look quite far down on 'them'.

This issue of personal, just as you will object vocally about that which you do not like as will I, you know that, and like I said before speaking out like I have I can only state from my point of view and my experience because it's the only one I have to mind.

Actually, I never said the word "malicious". That was someone else. I wouldn't have had to say that "not everyone is a dick" (nice paraphrase, by the way) if someone hadn't said "Sorry we're all dicks." I did say the bullshit thing, which I changed. It's not like I'm the only one who's disappointed in the forums. I'm just the only one who's said anything. I'm not sucking up to the cliques any longer. This isn't high-school.

Note: Disappointed in the forums as a whole does not point you out, sorry to say. Take it personally if you want. It won't help either of us.

Also, your "did-nice" comment is just rubbish.

Edit: Extra word, grammar.

Penguins can be bitches too.
starmekitten Posted - 01/13/2005 : 21:53:44
Speaking about things, all good good, and no I didn't think your bullshit post was the most offensive, I think you saved those for the other thread, but nor is it the only one I have commented on. And Stating that it is bullshit, that we're malicious, that the forum is a sad thing to watch and not everyone is a dick to paraphrase you is not discussion is it? It's plain old insulting.

And as for personal I can only comment for me so it's bound to be personal. I also took it as personal because unfortunately it was my question that started this and it is the name-changers you are directing at is it not? and I am one of those name changers am I not? Plus, you already did nice to one of the 'copy-cats' so it wouldn't be a difficult leap to guess you weren't annoyed at them.

Of all my statements I didn't think the "bullshit" one would be the most offensive. It's gone now. Most everyone likes flowers and puppies, I think.

I assure you that if Dean hadn't said anything that more accounts would have been created. Also, I haven't said any names at all, have I? Who said I was even talking about you? Who says it wasn't the copy-cats that I'm talking about? The fact that this was created into a horribly public thing that spawned a sticky is reason enough to speak out about it. You make it seem like it's intensely private. But ta-da! Top of the page. We may not know everything, but if we're not allowed to speak out about what we're told...then sorry, that's your problem. I actually thought that you were I Fought Pirahnas. So, in retrospect, the fact that other people followed your lead made your anonymity even more profound.

Penguins can be bitches too.

Oh clever you, you're so right, what I really wanted to do was put on a bright coloured banner and jump up and down shouting look at me look at me look at me.

No.

It'll be interesting for a week maybe, then it will be not interesting and I no longer have to see my name at the top of every post.

It draws attention when you make posts like yours, up until now it had all been quiet and I would have been happy to have bimble along quietly as starmekitten. People even call me kitten which I hope will stay because it's not my name.

From my point of view I feel most satisfied in this alteration, I don't know what your problem is.

starmekitten Posted - 01/13/2005 : 21:25:53
Well I think having my actual name on every post wasn't helping. I'm sure people who are around often enough already know it's me. It's not about that.

Unfortunately the world does not operate in neat little black and white boxes and some things are actually, get this, complicated.

And, none of your business.

I think without fully understanding why I felt I had to to this, you are in no position to judge. I have apologised to Dean twice now for asking him in the forum what in hindsight (wonderful thing) I should have e mailed him about.

I understand why this thread was started also. I knew that multiple accounts were frowned upon which is why I asked, and a spate of this would have caused the mods a headache I am sure. But think about it. Three people changed, three. Hardly the mayhem that would warrant 'this bullshit' in my opinion.

I don't think kitty is talking about regulars on the board. Obviously we all know each other here. But can't you understand the desire to have a username different from your first name? I think the notion that it's being done for malicious or deceitful reasons is ridiculous.
