Hi,

Does anyone know how to downoad bit torrents that could provide some basic how to's?

I downloaded one software that said it couldn't download my file b/c there were too many leachers.

Then I found one software that seemed pretty friendly, called BearShare, but I couldn't get the file to open.

Any help is much appriciated! Thanks!

Erm, hello!?

No, not at all. I don't really know the proper terms to use to explain it, but Bit Torrent downloading is basically where a show is uploaded by one person to a tracker and people download it off of that person. The big difference is that, when you download a show, you not only download it off of the person who originally uploaded it, but off of every single person who has their download window up. So, the more people who have downloaded it and are uploading it for you, the faster your download will go. There are no queues or anything like that, and there is no file sharing program you have to download, you just download the shows straight from the tracker. Also, unlike Soulseek, Kazaa, etc., all of the shows (at least on the good sited like easytree and everydayjones, etc.) are in lossless format rather than mp3.

I hope that's at least partially understandable.

Their search system BLOWS! I have found that the best thing to do is just type in one of the artist's names instead of first and last. For example, instead of Frank Black, just type in Frank; instead of Tom Waits, just type in Waits; instear of Black Sabbath, just type in Sabbath; etc. It doesn't help much, but it helps a little.

OK, now it's time for my dumb bit torrent question: for those of you using Easytree, is there a way to exclude words in the search? For example, I get 50 zillion Zappa, Black Sabbath, etc. hits when I search for Frank Black, and using "" and - doesn't work. It irks me.

Here's some pretty detailed instructions with no extraneous shit, which should only take about thirty seconds to read and figure out:

Pretty much just download Shorten (http://www.softsound.com/Shorten.html) for shn files, FLAC Frontend (http://members.home.nl/w.speek/flac.htm) for FLAC files, and the original BitTorrent client (http://bittorrent.com/download.html) for downloading stuff. From there it's pretty much self-explanatory: click on the file you want to download on sites like easytree.org, everydayjones.org, etc., choose a place to save it to, wait until it's completely finished downloading. Then, depending on whether it's in SHN format or FLAC, open up either Shorten (for SHN) or FLAC Frontend (for FLAC), choose your files, select the decompress option to convert them to WAV format, then you can burn them onto a CD.

You might have to open up ports in your firewall (or you might not) in order for your download speed to reach its maximum potential and this is the only part that's a bit confusing. If you need to do this, maybe someone else can explain it to you, as I don't have the time or knowledge (it took me forever to figure out my own!).

That's the FAQ, although it confused me more than anything. Better to figure it out on my own, I guess. Basically it's a way of downloading files. Easytree is a bit torrent site and a good placet to grab Pixies boots.
