Posted - 11/26/2004 : 07:08:13 Alright, so I now own a Fujifilm Finepix 40i which has been a great little camera for almost five years. However, with a looming trip to New York City and an impending trip to Europe, plus a broken battery door and some dated technology on my existing camera, I'm looking at a new one.
There are a lot of factors. We all know that ultra-compact isn't quite as good, but I'm hardly a professional. I DO want an optical zoom, which you can now have in a compact or ultra compact, but I've been thinking of moving up to a more slr-like camera. Not so good for travel, but some nice pics.
So, out of the Ultra Compacts, I've narrowed it down to: Canon Powershot SD300 (Elph) Fuji E550 Fuji F810
For the not compact at alls: Olympus C-8080 Fuji S7000Z
Opinions? Have a camera you love? Want to talk about something else entirely? Go on...

Posted - 12/12/2004 : 09:36:58 I actually got it on Thursday, so I've been playing around with it quite a bit trying to learn the ins and outs of manual photography. I hope I can get some nice NYC shots. I've been thinking about getting some webspace to share some of my favourite photos, so if I do, I'll let 'ya know.

Posted - 12/12/2004 : 08:35:38 wow. Kinda hefty price but I'm sure it's worth it. When will you be getting this beauty Dean?
If you happen to have it in NYC, I hope you can share some pics. |

Posted - 12/06/2004 : 21:19:49 Well, I couldn't bring myself to move into the SLR realm. I need something somewhat portable. I decided a compromise was in order, between the quality/features of an SLR and the convenience of a point and shoot.

Posted - 11/29/2004 : 13:34:20 I'm thinking of a digital camera too but want to just buy some crappy point and shoot for now. I'm looking at getting a 3.0 megapixel. One thing that is bugging me is that none of them seem to go higher than 400 iso. Are there any point and shoots that will reach 800 at least or even better 1600? I want to buy this only for shooting shows where they don't allow cameras in, and this would be much easier to put down my pants than my slr. I've looked on the net and can't find any. Under $300 would be preferable.

Posted - 11/29/2004 : 12:29:08 Hey, I love my EOS too. And I'm sure I'll love it even more when I've finally got around to using it...
"Just kill the one with the sword first." "Ah," Reagan says, raising his waxed and penciled eyebrows, and cocking his pompadour in Shaftoe's direction. "Smarrrt--you target them because they're the officers, right?" "No, fuckhead!" Shaftoe yells. "You kill 'em because they've got fucking swords! You ever had anyone running at you waving a fucking sword?" |

Posted - 11/29/2004 : 11:35:28 I've actually been looking pretty seriously at the Rebel/EOS 300D. I really did want something I could throw in my pocket for travelling, but then I also want to develop my photographic hobby a little more. If the Elph did higher res than 4 MP, I might have gone with it, but I have no clear winner to choose in the ultra-compact category.
I'll keep you posted. I'd hopefully be able to acquire one prior to New York in two weeks.

Posted - 11/29/2004 : 11:25:01 I have an olympus c-7XX (don't remember the number, but it's more spiff than the c-730 I just googled) and am extremely happy with it EXCEPT that it doesn't focus well in med/low-light situations. The zoom is the most I could get at the time for this class of camera, and it has a good macro function (I shoot a lot of close-up textural stuff, and the in-camera crop function helps with this too). It's my first digital camera - next time I will go much higher end.
I also love my regular Canon Rebel SLR - it's light as a feather (unless I use my big honking glass and metal zoom lens) for easy packing around. Used this one for many weddings with very good results.
Let us know what you buy Dean. |

Posted - 11/26/2004 : 19:19:59 Steve's Digicams is good, but I prefer www.imaging-resource.com myself. Sooooo many reviews.
I can't vouch for those particular models, but I have a Canon A60 and I love it. When I replace it, I will be replacing it with another Canon. Canon makes some great cameras.
I guess I just wasn't made for these times. |

Posted - 11/26/2004 : 07:39:28 Beer is good. I'm looking forward to two days off and beer to feed my grow(l)ing belly. Beer and photography = bad. Unless you're the one with the camera.
A friend of mine likes the Nikons too, but I'm not sure. The interface is definitely intuitive. Unlike the Olympus, which I probably will not go for.
Any review sites you especially like? I've been spending some serious time @ dpreview.com. Very comprehensive.

Posted - 11/26/2004 : 07:26:32 I have a Canon EOS 300D, which I think has some different, slightly ridiculous name in the US [googling... here it is: "Digital Rebel". Arf!], but I haven't put it to the test yet. Which makes this post totally unhelpful, but hey, what did you expect.
My wife has a Nikon Coolpix 4300, which she's very happy with, but it is painfully slow, and falls back in economy mode (i.e. basically blacks out) at the most awkward moments. Which I've been told is the major drawback of all digitals, except for professional digital SLR models that cost 5000 euros.

Posted - 11/26/2004 : 07:23:41 Yeah, let's talk about beer instead. Friday night is coming and I'm dying for a beer. I think I'll have a Kronenburg right before going to my rehearsal, and drink a couple more in the studio.
