Posted - 11/25/2004 : 12:54:20 What's the ideal length for an EP? In terms of time/number of tracks? Is four songs of average length enough, or would it be really cool to get an 8-track EP?
Opines?

Sir Rockabye thanks for sharing that track. I really like the punk rock vibe and your sound. It reminds me a little of Fugazi, which I like. You're older tune is cool too and reminds me a little of Sonic Youth. I hope you don't mind the comparisons :) That was so cool and easy to download. Let me know if for some reason you ever play in the Twin Cities and I will come to your gig!

Posted - 11/28/2004 : 09:39:57 Ah, getting a good drummer can make all the difference, but it's not as easy as it sounds. Good luck to you, too!
We're doing a recording session tonight in the garage so that we can review the various tracks and see how we're doing tightness wise and which songs we might want to record properly.
I think 6 songs rings a nice note with me. 8 seems a little much, four seems a little shy, so I could see six...

Posted - 11/27/2004 : 08:41:03 I don't think there's any sort of hard and fast rules. At throwingmusic.com, you'll find that the Fifty Foot Wave CD is variously described as an EP or a mini-album, and thats 6 tracks.

Posted - 11/27/2004 : 08:29:51 I agree with cheeseman. More than 6 I would say is a mni album and more than 8 - and album.
a six track ep would be cool.

Posted - 11/26/2004 : 23:38:53 I'd say more is better, but what matters more than that is not using too much material that you plan to put on an album. Too much overlap is not good.

Posted - 11/26/2004 : 06:49:28 Hey, congrats Sir Rockabye. I've already been by your site at some other point, good stuff and all the best with that!
It seems like everyone agrees that less than four is no good which I would also agree with. My thought is more is better, but I know there are people who complain about lengths (like saying TOTY is too long) so I thought some people might have some strong opinions about EP lengths too. 8 also seems to be mini-album territory, which doesn't concern me. It'd be cool to have a mini-album. EPs are so blase. :)
Our problem is that our stuff tends to be a little diverse, so it's the old debate of trying to get a bunch of ideas on there without losing cohesiveness. I've got the final four down, I think, that fit well together but are all quite different, but I'd like more than the bare minimum I think. And it's not that the other songs would be filler, they just might not fit as well. To give you an idea, we're talking instrumental surf, new-wave/punk-pop (think orange album), Spoonish/Wilcoish track, 60s pop, jazz/blues-ish, drony space-rock, gbv meets flaming lips, and interpol meets franz ferdinand. Actually, given those descriptions, they fit together pretty well.
There's no EP forthcoming any time soon, but heck, I'm bored.

Posted - 11/26/2004 : 06:00:10 Depends on the length of the tracks Mr Of Frank. If you've got standard four minute-ish numbers then four or five would be an EP, 6-7 a minialbum, 8+ an album. If you have a crazy long song, then you could get away with three tracks, if you have short songs then you can bung a pile on there.

Posted - 11/26/2004 : 04:39:00 Beta Band had a few EPs each with three tracks of about five-six minutes each.

Posted - 11/25/2004 : 21:49:10 I'd say between four and six songs. My band is about to record a new EP. Will probably be four songs.

Posted - 11/25/2004 : 20:16:02 Thanks Daisy. If you have any interest in hearing, we do have one song up from the EP right now. It can be heard at www.purevolume.com/willumandtheworks . The song that is up there that is from the EP is called "2-4-6-8 Come on Kids Phosphorylate". The other song we have posted was recorded a long time ago.

For me, I like 5 or more tracks. But it's also more about the quality. I would rather have a 4 track EP with all killer songs than a 8 tracks with for killer tracks and 4 ok ones.
