When the republicans lost 2 in a row they blamed the candidate.
Bush I was blamed for backtracking on his infamous "read my lips, no new taxes" pledge. That pushed away fiscal conservatives and opened the door for a Perot candidacy.
Dole was blamed for being what he was, a guy who had been in the Senate too long, was too far beyond his prime, and suffered from a charisma deficit disorder.
They also gave credit where credit was due. Bill Clinton, for all his foibles and narcissism, is still credited with being among the greatest politicians in our time. Also recognized was his ability to speak directly to the electorate with a sense of understanding that helped him to be considered 'one of us' by more voters than his opponents.
Even going back to Big Dick Nixon, when he lost to Kennedy in a race that was stolen, he stepped aside rather than divide the country with a prolonged investigation full of accusations against the man who still may have become sitting President. Compare that to Al Gores lawyers trying to dissalow the votes of military personnel overseas and trying to cherry pick which precincts to recount.
